Older, richer, and fatter, but not wiser, the three men stumble through mishaps and surprises as they journey to Germany. First saying their goodbyes, J and Harris seek the approval of their wives, worried about leaving their kids. Their wives are supportive, secretly considering their husbands’ trip from home as a vacation for themselves as well. Still a bachelor, George tells his aunt about the trip before they depart. First arriving in a boat, the men journey through Germany, stopping in Hamburg, Hanover, and Berlin. When they are able, they stay in hotels and inns, and when they are desperate, the sleep in the barns of kind farmers. After a long journey, the men finally arrive at their destination. Planning on completing a cycling tour through the German Black Forest, the men take a single rider and a tandem bicycle, making a solemn compromise to take turns being the solo rider. As they set out on their bike ride, the friends are amazed by the beauty and serenity of the forest, until they start to realize that everything looks familiar. Lost in the woods and going in circles, the three men must find a way home from their adventure before they get caught in the impending rain storm. Through sketches and detailed observations, Jerome K. Jerome’s Three Men on the Bummel provides a fascinating perspective on the landscape and culture of 20th century Germany. With drunken adventures, sword fights, and misfortunate weather, Three Men on the Bummel is an exciting and charming travelogue, humorous and enjoyable even for modern audiences. Book excerpt: First published anonymously in 1892, Weeds marked a significant departure from the humour that made Jerome K. Jerome famous. This disturbing story of sexual corruption shows marital fidelity as a perpetual struggle, with Dick Selwyn falling for the attractions of his wife's young cousin, Jessie. The link between mental and physical corruption is sustained through a central metaphor of a weed-infested garden, which perishes through neglect. With its radical ending, this story of the dark side of passion casts an important light on late-nineteenth-century sexual politics and gender ideology. Jerome engages with contemporary debates on degeneration and the emergence of the New Woman, offering a powerful evocation of fin-de-siècle society. Jerome's publisher Arrowsmith was nervous about the book's frank portrayal of adultery and it was never available for general sale during his lifetime. This new edition, with a critical introduction, bibliography and explanatory footnotes by Carolyn W. de la L. Oulton, reconsiders Jerome K. Jerome's important and neglected work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerome Klapka Jerome was an English writer and humourist, best known for the comic travelogue Three Men in a Boat. Other works include the essay collections Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow; Three Men on the Bummel, a sequel to Three Men in a Boat, and several other novels.Jerome sat right down to write Three Men during a Boat as soon because the couple returned from their honeymoon. within the novel, his wife was replaced by his longtime friends George Wingrave (George) and Carl Hentschel (Harris). This allowed him to make comic (and non-sentimental) situations which were nonetheless intertwined with the history of the Thames region. The book, published in 1889, became a moment success and has never been out of print. Its popularity was such the amount of registered Thames boats went up one-half within the year following its publication, and it contributed significantly to the Thames becoming a tourist attraction. In its first twenty years alone, the book sold over 1,000,000 copies worldwide. it's been adapted to films, TV and radio shows, stage plays, and a musical. Its literary genre influenced many humourists and satirists in England et al. .With the financial security that the sales of the book provided, Jerome was ready to dedicate all of his time to writing. He wrote variety of plays, essays, and novels, but was never ready to recapture the success of Three Men during a Boat. In 1892, he was chosen by Robert Barr to edit The Idler (over Rudyard Kipling). The magazine was an illustrated satirical monthly catering to gentlemen (who, following the theme of the publication, appreciated idleness). In 1893, he founded To-Day, but had to withdraw from both publications due to financial difficulties and a libel suit.Jerome's play Biarritz had a run of two months at the Prince of Wales Theatre between April and June 1896.In 1898, a brief stay in Germany inspired Three Men on the Bummel, the sequel to 3 Men during a Boat, reintroducing an equivalent characters within the setting of a far off bicycle tour. The book was nonetheless unable to capture the life-force and historic roots of its predecessor, and it enjoyed only a light success. In 1902, he published the novel Paul Kelver, which is widely considered autobiographical. His 1908 play The Passing of the Third Floor Back introduced a more sombre and non secular Jerome. the most character was played by one among the leading actors of the time, Johnston Forbes-Robertson, and therefore the play was an incredible commercial success. it had been twice made into film, in 1918 and in 1935. However, the play was condemned by critics - Beerbohm described it as "vilely stupid" and as written by a "tenth-rate writer"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerome K Jerome is best known for his hilarious book "Three Men in a Boat" charting the misadventures of the author and his friends on a boating trip up the Thames. The book started off as a serious Travel Book, but morphed into a very funny book and a social commentary. The success of this book caused the author to write a sequel "Three Men on the Bummel," the same character choose this time to take a cycling trip in Germany. "Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow" is another humorous book, but this time peppered with philosophical truths. As is its sequel "Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow." "Told after Supper" is a series of humorous Ghost Stories. "Diary of a Pilgrimage" is another funny travel book - a journey to see the famous Passion Play at Oberammergau, again very witty and deserves to be read along with Jerome's more famous book. The "Philosopher's Joke" is a short story involving six friends who meet an old philosopher. For a joke, or perhaps a dream, they start a strange journey into their past. Will they take hold of this opportunity and reap the benefits? "All Roads lead to Calvary" is a very different book. Set at the beginning of World War I it charts the progress of a number of professional women who make their way through life without the support of men. Jerome reveals his theology in this book, a theology of the cross: as God in Christ suffered, so all self-giving leads to God. In addition, God is not to be thought of as a great king but as a fellow-worker and his purposes are worked out in the everyday struggles of life. "Sketches in Lavender, Blue and Green" is an excellent and sometimes amusing short story collection. It includes "Reginald Blake, Financier and Cad," "An item of Fashionable Intelligence," "Blas Billy," "The Choice of Cyril Harjohn," "The Materialisation of Charles and Mivanway," "Portrait of a Lady," "The Man Who Would Manage," "The Man Who Lived For Others," "A Man of Habit," "The Absent-minded Man," "A Charming Woman," "Whibley's Spirit," "The Man Who Went Wrong," "The Hobby Rider," "The Man Who Did Not Believe In Luck," "Dick Dunkerman's Cat," "The Minor Poet's Story," "The Degeneration of Thomas Henry," "The City of The Sea," and "Driftwood."

THE DIARY OF A NOBODY Mr Charles Pooter is a respectable man. He has just moved into a very desirable home in Holloway with his dear wife Carrie, from where he commutes to his job of valued clerk at a reputable bank in the City. Unfortunately neither his dear friends Mr Cummings and Mr Gowing, nor the butcher, the greengrocer's boy, nor the Lord Mayor seem to recognise Mr Pooter's innate gentility, and his disappointing son Lupin has gone and got himself involved with a most unsuitable fiancee... George and Weedon Grossmith's comic novel, perfectly illustrated by Weedon, is a glorious, affectionate caricature of the English middle-class at the end of nineteenth century. THREE MEN IN A BOAT ILLUSTRATED BY VIC REEVES What could be more relaxing than a refreshing holiday on the river with your two best friends and faithful canine companion, Montmorency? However, as J. discovers, there is more to life on the waves than meets the eye - including navigational challenges, culinary disasters, and heroic battles with swans, kettles and tins of pineapple. Jerome K. Jerome's delightful novel has kept readers smiling for years and his prose has found a perfect partner in Vic Reeves's glorious and witty illustrations.

The New Utopia is a short story in which the author describes his dream about a socialist society. Jerome's short essay describes a regimented future city, indeed world, of nightmarish egalitarianism, where men and women are barely distinguishable in their grey uniforms and all have short black hair, natural or dyed. Other works include the essay collections Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow (1886) and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow; Three Men on the Bummel, a sequel to Three Men in a Boat; and several other novels.

Book excerpt: When J. the narrator, George, Harris and Montmorency the dog set off on their hilarious misadventures, they can hardly predict the troubles that lie ahead with tow-ropes, unreliable weather-forecasts, imaginary illnesses, butter pats and tins of pineapple chunks. Denounced as vulgar by the literary establishment, Three Men in a Boat nevertheless caught the spirit of the times. The expansion of education and the increase in office workers created a new mass readership, and Jerome's book was especially popular among the 'clerking classes' who longed to be 'free from that fretful haste, that vehement striving, that is every day becoming more and more the bane of nineteenth-century life.' So popular did it prove that Jerome reunited his heroes for a bicycle tour of Germany. Despite some sharp, and with hindsight, prophetic observations of the country, Three Men on the Bummel describes an equally picaresque journey constrained only 'by the necessity of getting back within a given time to the point from which one started'. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contents: My Man Jeeves Extricating Young Gussie Right Ho, Jeeves Jeeves is a fictional character in a series of humorous short stories and novels by P. G. Wodehouse, being the highly-competent valet of a wealthy and idle young Londoner named Bertie Wooster created in 1915. Both the name "Jeeves" and the character of Jeeves have come to be thought of as the quintessential name and nature of a valet or butler, inspiring many similar characters. The premise of the Jeeves stories is that the brilliant valet is firmly in control of his rich and foppish young employer's life. Jeeves becomes Bertie Wooster's protector and all-purpose problem solver, devising subtle plans to rescue Bertie and his friends from tiresome social obligations, demanding relatives, brushes with the law, and, above all, problems involving women. Wodehouse derives much comic effect from having Bertie, his narrator, remain blissfully unaware of Jeeves's machinations, until all is revealed at the end of the story.
