Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Jay: Franklin County, Maine IN attempting to write the early history of Jay, my native town, I have been influenced by three considerations: first, that no authentic history of the town has been written up to this date; second, that the Opportunity for gathering the fragments of the early records of the town and gleaning from the fading memories of aged citizens the unwritten history of many important events connected with the lives of the early settlers Will soon be lost forever; and third, that I have been induced by several of the contemporaries of my boyhood to take up the work because Of the exceptional Opportunities I have enjoyed for gathering up the materials for such a work. There are few persons Who do not have a natural pride and interest in the place of their nativity and a desire to perpetuate the memories of their ancestors. But aside from these family considerations, it is an important duty of a town, and one which it owes to itself and the generations following, to have an authentic record of its early days placed in its archives for future reference. A thousand little incidents gathered from the lives of individuals or from private papers may cast light upon important questions that may arise in the future. A warrant for a town meeting or some other nunicipal regu lation, apparently insignificant in itself, may fix a date or determine the motive Of a transaction or exhibit the spirit Of the age in which it occurred. This volume, as it contains a large portion of the account of the grave disaster which befell the State in the mismanaged Penobscot Expedition, will, I believe, be welcomed by students of Maine history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eastern Maine and the Rebellion: Being an Account of the Principal Local Events in Eastern Maine During the War Has been our endeavor in these pages, to depict the scenes and incidents occuring at home, during the Rebellion, rather than the giving of a minute description of the varied experiences of the thous ands, who marched away from Eastern Maine, at their Country's call. We lay no claim to high literary merit, simply placing before you, in condensed form, the facts; believing that as the memories of the older readers are quickened, and the younger generation learn of the experi ences of fathers and mothers, in their efforts to preserve the Union, all will find something of deep interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the First-Tenth-Twenty-Ninth Maine Regiment: In Service of the United States From May 3, 1861, to June 21, 1866 For a number Of years before the war it was my custom to keep for my own amusement a record of daily events, whether of a general or personal nature, and it SO happened that the interest in journalizing increased with the years of practice, until at the breaking out Of the rebellion it had become habitual and easy to make a note Of any event. The difficulties in the way Of con tinning this practice in field service were forgotten in the desire to chronicle the stirring events of war and the novelties of soldier life. SO the diary was not abandoned; only it was written in sheets in order to be sent home every few days. These sheets of diary proved so acceptable a substitute for letters among a large circle Of relatives and friends, that at last it became a duty almost sacred to write it, freely, fully and promptly, for the relief of the anxious hearts at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documentary History of the State of Maine, Vol. 13 This volume contains correspondence of Thomas Pownall, whose prudent administration of affairs during his incumbency of the important office of Royal Governor of Massachusetts entitles him to an honorable place in our colonial history. The publication of Charles A. W. Pownall's recent book "Thomas Pownall, M.P. F.R.S. Governor of Massachusetts Bay etc. etc., 1722-1805," in which he makes a notable addition to the controversy respecting the authorship of the Junius letters, which he believes should be ascribed to the Governor, will lend to this correspondence increased interest. A comparison of the hand writing of Governor Pownall with that of Junius strongly supports the claim of his kinsman, and we are obliged to pass unquestioned his assertion that the Governor's knowledge of political conditions especially fitted him for writing them. He says, "That no place in the province which this Governor worked so hard for while there, and had so deep an affection for always, derives its name from him. What is now Dresden on the Kennebec river, in the region which his expeditions opened for settlement was at first called Pownalborough, but at the beginning of the last century the present designation was adopted." Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Turner, Maine, From Its Settlement to 1886 This work was undertaken by the urgent solicitation of others, knowing something of the difficulties that must be encountered, and of the tax upon the time and strength which were all needed for other labors. But it seemed desirable that the history of the town should be written, as the celebration of its Centennial would awaken a special interest in it; and as no other came to mind who could conveniently attend to it, the work was reluctantly undertaken. Dr. Timothy Howe wrote a history of the town, which he left in manuscript; this has furnished much valuable information which it would be difficult, if not impossible, to gain now. The writer of this has been largely indebted to him, and wishes to make suitable acknowledgments. The records of the Proprietors of the Township have been carefully consulted, as also the Records of the Town from the date of its incorporation, and the Records and Papers in the State House, Boston. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documentary History of the State of Maine, Vol. 18: Containing the Baxter Manuscripts His volume contains the history of the Revolution in Maine and reveals the slipshod manner in which both parties conducted the war. Not only did the authorities on the American side proceed in a careless, unsystematic and blundering manner in the defence, leaving the soldiers engaged in it to starve and freeze until they heard a frantic appeal for help, but the British displayed no enterprise in prosecuting offensive operations. Had they possessed a single able military commander, they could have occupied and held the eastern part of Maine at almost any time. They were far from being offensive. NO wonder that Horace Walpole ridiculed the English commanders for their display of etiquette in conducting the war. I am printing at the end of this volume an interesting petition of 1672, for which I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. George S. Stewart, A. B., who copied it from the original. Action on this petition was taken a few months later, and is to be found at page 330 in Vol. 1 of my manuscript Series, or Vol. 4 of the Documentary History.
