To operate a free electron laser at shorter wavelengths imposes constraints on the brightness of the electron beam which are difficult to achieve. Until recently, it was perceived that only an electron storage ring could satisfy these beam requirements. However, our previous 1 D theoretical calculations revealed that modest improvements in the emittance available from rf linear accelerators would be sufficient to allow operation of an FEL in the XUV spectral range. A new theoretical results is presented for the design of a linac driven XUV FEL derived from an improved simulation model. The model is fully three dimensional in its treatment of the undulator magnetic field, the optical radiation field, and the motion of electrons in a finite emittance beam. Furthermore, the model computes self-consistently the motion of the electrons and the amplification, diffraction, and the refraction of the light within the undulator magnet. Propagation of the optical beam and reflection at the mirrors of the optical resonator are incorporated in the model so that a complete laser oscillator solution can be generated. The computed performance parameters of a particular XUV FEL oscillator design will be compared with the output of synchrotron radiation sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of theoretical research on Free Electron Lasers (FELs) are presented. Basic FEL physics is reviewed, using a previously developed classical theory. Numerical simulations based on this theory are described, and numerous examples show how they have been used to increase understanding of existing FELs and to help plan new experiments. Single-mode simulations that follow the evolution of a single-frequency plane wave provide insight into important physical effects in FELs. Results show how these simulations are used to evaluate new FEL designs such as inverse-tapered and step-tapered undulators. Longitudinal multimode simulations model plane waves using finite-length electron and optical pulses. These simulations are used to study coherence evolution in various FEL designs, and to explain effects such as limit-cycle behavior. Transverse multimode simulations that allow for the finite transverse dimensions of the optical wavefronts include the effects of optical mode distortion. These simulations are currently being used to design short Rayleigh length optical cavities that are less sensitive to mirror damage. Four- dimensional simulations are also described, which follow the optical wavefront in x, y, z, and t, including the effects of multiple longitudinal and transverse modes. These simulations are computationally intensive, but may play an important role in the design of future high-power FELs.

Book excerpt: We have modified a two-dimensional relativistic klystron code, developed by Ryne and Yu, to simulate both the standing-wave free- electron laser two-beam accelerator and the relativistic klystron two- beam accelerator. In this paper, the code is used to study a standing-wave free-electron laser with three cavities. The effect of the radius of the electron beam on the RF output power; namely, a three-dimensional effect is examined.

Book excerpt: A MW level FEL is being designed with a short a Rayleigh length resonator to increase the spot size at the mirrors and to avoid mirror damage. In this thesis, it is found that it is desirable to focus the electron beam to improve the FEL extraction efficiency. Three-dimensional simulations show that the focused electron beam increases the extraction efficiency far beyond the desired value of 0.7%. It is also found in this thesis that shifting the electron beam off- axis less than 0.3 mm, the efficiency remains above the required value. The proposed FEL design uses high power, short optical pulses whose spectrum% may cover many absorption lines. The absorbed laser energy can heat up the air resulting in defocusing the laser beam (thermal blooming). This thesis shows that thermal blooming is not an issue for a moderate clear atmosphere when the stagnation zone size remains less than 10 m. A transitional step for the development of a MW level FEL weapon is the proposed 100 kW upgrade of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility's FEL. It has also been shown in this thesis that the use of a step-taper undulator slightly improves the performance of the FEL. Finally, the potential of various high average power solid-state laser designs are reviewed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time that we decided to begin work on this book, several other volumes on the free-electron laser had either been published or were in press. The earliest work of which we were aware was published in 1985 by Dr T. C. Marshall of Columbia University [1]. This book dealt with the full range of research on free-electron lasers, including an overview of the extant experiments. However, the field has matured a great deal since that time and, in our judgement, the time was ripe for a more extensive work which includes the most recent advances in the field. The fundamental work in this field has largely been approached from two distinct and, unfortunately, separate viewpoints. On the one hand, free-electron lasers at sub-millimetre and longer wavelengths driven by low-energy and high-current electron beams have been pursued by the plasma physics and microwave tube communities. This work has confined itself largely to the high-gain regimes in which collective effects may play an important role. On the other hand, short-wavelength free-electron lasers in the infrared and optical regimes have been pursued by the accelerator and laser physics community. Due to the high-energy and low-current electron beams appropriate to this spectral range, these experiments have operated largely in the low-gain single-particle regimes. The most recent books published on the free-electron laser by Dr C. A.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of the book is to provide a systematic and didactic approach to the physics and technology of free-electron lasers. Numerous figures are used for illustrating the underlying ideas and concepts and links to other fields of physics are provided. After an introduction to undulator radiation and the low-gain FEL, the one-dimensional theory of the high-gain FEL is developed in a systematic way. Particular emphasis is put on explaining and justifying the various assumptions and approximations that are needed to obtain the differential and integral equations governing the FEL dynamics. Analytical and numerical solutions are presented and important FEL parameters are defined, such as gain length, FEL bandwidth and saturation power. One of the most important features of a high-gain FEL, the formation of microbunches, is studied at length. The increase of gain length due to beam energy spread, space charge forces, and three-dimensional effects such as betatron oscillations and optical diffraction is analyzed. The mechanism of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission is described theoretically and illustrated with numerous experimental results. Various methods of FEL seeding by coherent external radiation are introduced, together with experimental results. The world’s first soft X-ray FEL, the user facility FLASH at DESY, is described in some detail to give an impression of the complexity of such an accelerator-based light source. The last chapter is devoted to the new hard X-ray FELs which generate extremely intense radiation in the Angstrøm regime. The appendices contain supplementary material and more involved calculations.

Book excerpt: The generation of coherent electromagnetic radiation by the interaction of a relativistic electron beam with a static helical magnetic field is investigated using one- and two-dimensional relativistic electromagnetic plasma simulation codes. In the one-dimensional simulations, we observed the coupling between the negative energy beam mode and the positive energy electromagnetic wave. Substantial growth rate (omega1 approx. 0.1 omega/sub pe/) of the unstable electromagnetic wave has been observed and efficiency of radiation production is found to be between 25 to 30% depending on various parameters. In the two-dimensional simulations, we observed a decrease in the growth rate, but increased efficiency due to the decrease in the phase velocity of the unstable electrostatic wave. In addition, we also observed waves propagating at an angle with respect to the electron beam. Consequently, the beam is bunched in the radial as well as the axial directions. These waves are believed to be generated by another instability which saturates at relatively low level.

Book excerpt: In a free electron laser a relativistic electron beam is bunched under the action of the ponderomotive potential and is forced to radiate in close phase with the input wave. Until recently, most theories of the FEL have dealt solely with electron beams of infinite transverse dimension radiating only one-dimensional E.M. waves (plane waves). Although these theories describe accurately the dynamics of the electrons during the FEL interaction process, neither the three dimensional nature of the radiated fields nor its non-monochromatic features can be properly studied by them. As a result of this, very important practical issues such as the gain per gaussian-spherical optical mode in a free electron laser have not been well addressed, except through a one dimensional field model in which a filling factor describes crudely the coupling of the FEL induced field to the input field.
