Book excerpt: "This thesis deals with the theoretical study of the linear and nonlinear dynamics of a slender flexible cantilevered cylindrical structure subjected to external axial water and air flows, of interest because of several important practical applications such as nuclear reactor fuel-element bundles, double pipe heat exchangers, and angioplasty. Lack of knowledge to account for the three-dimensional behaviour, important in the above-mentioned practical applications, was the motivation behind the present work. The theoretical results were obtained in the form of the amplitudes and frequencies of the instabilities, as well as the critical flow velocities at which these instabilities occurred. Experiments were conducted to validate and complement the theoretical results for water flow. The results obtained from the experiments were presented in the form of dimensionless mean displacements, their corresponding root mean square values, and frequencies as a function of dimensionless flow velocity. Finally, the path traced by the oscillating cylinder was mapped. In fluid-structure interaction problems, the fluid forces such as the inviscid hydrodynamic forces, the frictional or viscous forces, and the hydrostatic or pressure forces acting on the flexible structure play a vital role in defining the dynamics of the system. Therefore, a precise calculation of the force coefficients, such as longitudinal and normal viscous coefficients, base drag coefficient, and zero-flow normal force coefficient present in the equations of motion associated to the above mentioned fluid forces, is imperative. These presently calculated force coefficients were then incorporated in the linear and nonlinear equations of motion and solved to obtain the response of the cylinder in water flow. The response of the system from the linear model in air flow was also obtained. The effect of confinement on the linear dynamics was also studied. A nonlinear three-dimensional cantilevered cylinder model was also created and simulated in a commercially available finite element modeling and simulation package, namely ADINA, in order to complement the results obtained from the linear and nonlinear models. The results of the ADINA simulations were obtained in water as well as air flows.Experimental results validated the analytical and numerical model results. The results, thus obtained, are expected to play an important role in improving the above-mentioned engineering and medical applications to ensure operation below critical flow conditions." --

Book excerpt: "A pipe conveying fluid is a typical example of a fluid-structure-interaction problem, in which the pipe becomes unstable at sufficiently high flow velocities via static divergence or oscillatory motion, namely flutter, depending on the boundary conditions. That particular system has been under study for almost a century and it has become a paradigm in dynamics, especially the cantilevered pipe, not only because of the rich dynamics that this system exhibits, but also for its industrial importance. In addition, the stability of a cantilevered cylindrical structure subjected to axial flow has been investigated over decades; a relatively recent challenge is to consider the inverted problem, in which the upstream end of the cylinder is free and the downstream one is clamped. This inverted system was found to lose stability via flutter at low flow velocities, with potential applications in energy harvesting.Examining the dynamics of a cantilevered pipe simultaneously subjected to internal and inverted external axial flows is the main objective of this thesis. This system has several industrial applications, such as heat exchangers, drill-strings, and brine-strings that are used in solution mining; moreover, in this latter application, the salt-mined caverns are subsequently used for hydrocarbon storage and retrieval.Linear and nonlinear theoretical models are developed in this thesis to investigate the stability and to examine the nonlinear dynamics of three systems. Specifically, the systems under study are: (i) a cantilevered cylinder subjected to inverted external axial flow, (ii) a cantilevered pipe discharging fluid with inverted external flow confined over the whole length of the pipe, and (iii) a cantilevered pipe simultaneously subjected to internal flow and inverted external axial flow confined only over its upper portion. The equations of motion are derived using the extended Hamilton's principle and via a Newtonian approach, in some cases with separate derivation of the fluid-related forces. Each equation is discretized using the Galerkin method to a set of ordinary differential equations which are then solved using the pseudo-arclength continuation method and a direct time integration technique for nonlinear analysis. The results obtained with all three models are compared to experimental observations reported in the literature and to theoretical predictions of earlier linear models. Furthermore, the influence of various system parameters on the dynamical behaviour of these systems is investigated theoretically.New sets of experiments have been conducted for the third system, and the results are presented in this thesis, supported by a linear theoretical analysis. These experiments are aimed at investigating the effect of the external annular flow on the stability of the system by increasing the ratio of annular to internal flow velocities. It was found that increasing this ratio destabilizes the system drastically. Furthermore, improvements to the initial form of the theory are implemented, which enable achieving good to excellent agreement between theory and experiments, both qualitatively and quantitatively"--

Book excerpt: Application of Numerical Methods in Engineering Problems Using MATLAB® presents an analysis of structures using numerical methods and mathematical modeling. This structural analysis also includes beam, plate, and pipe elements, and examines deflection and frequency or buckling loads. The various engineering theories of beams/plates/shells are comprehensively presented, and the relationships between stress and strain, and the governing equations of the structure are extracted. To solve governing equations with numerical methods, there are two general types, including methods based on derivatives or integrals. Derivative-based methods have the advantage of flexibility in modeling boundary conditions, low analysis time, and a very high degree of accuracy. Therefore, the book explains numerical methods based on derivatives, especially the differential quadrature method. Features: Examines the application of numerical methods to obtain the deflection, frequency, and buckling loads. Discusses the application of numerical methods for solving motion equations. Includes numerous practical and applicable examples throughout.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the study of coupled partial differential equation models, which describe complex dynamical systems occurring in modern scientific applications such as fluid/flow-structure interactions. The first chapter provides a general description of a fluid-structure interaction, which is formulated within a realistic framework, where the structure subject to a frictional damping moves within the fluid. The second chapter then offers a multifaceted description, with often surprising results, of the case of the static interface; a case that is argued in the literature to be a good model for small, rapid oscillations of the structure. The third chapter describes flow-structure interaction where the compressible Navier-Stokes equations are replaced by the linearized Euler equation, while the solid is taken as a nonlinear plate, which oscillates in the surrounding gas flow. The final chapter focuses on a the equations of nonlinear acoustics coupled with linear acoustics or elasticity, as they arise in the context of high intensity ultrasound applications.

Book excerpt: This plenary paper and the accompanying presentation have highlighted field problems involving fluid-structure interaction over a wide span of Navy operations. Considering the vast size and versatility of the Navy's inventory, the cases presented represent examples of a much larger problem. But even this limited set provides sufficient evidence that fluid-structure interaction does hinder the Navy's ability to accomplish its missions. This survey has also established that there are no accurate and generally applicable design tools for addressing these problems. In the majority of cases the state-of-practice is to either make ad-hoc adjustments and estimates based on historical evidence, or conduct expensive focused tests directed at each specific problem and/or candidate solution. Unfortunately, these approaches do not provide insight into the fundamental problem, and neither can be considered reliable regarding their likelihood of success. So the opportunities for applying computational fluid-structure interaction modeling to Navy problems appear limitless. Scenarios range from the "simple" resonant strumming of underwater and in-air cables, to the "self-contained" flow field and vibration of aircraft/ordnance bodies at various Mach numbers, to violent underwater transient detonations and local hull structural collapse. Generally applicable and computationally tractable design-oriented models for these phenomena are of course still far in the future. But the Navy has taken the first steps in that direction by sponsoring specialized numerical models, validation experiments tailored for specific applications, and conferences such as this one.
