The intent is to provide some insight as to the present state of grid generation for aircraft configurations in order to help assess whether this task presents a long term stumbling block to routine use of CFD in aerodynamic applications. This AGARDograph begins with a brief review of some of the techniques that are available for generating body-conforming curvilinear grids. In order to assess capabilities in grid generation, colleagues at selected institutions were solicited to describe their experiences and difficulties in grid generation of complex configurations. The intent here was not to describe the very latest in grid generation procedures, but to solicit honest comments about what are the difficulties in generating practical grids and what steps are taken to meet these difficulties. These experiences, which comprise the heart of this AGARDograph, are presented as case histories. Keywords: Computational fluid dynamics; Nato furnished; Aerodynamic configuration; Grids(coordinates); Computation; Computer graphics; Wing body configurations; Generating functions; Evaluation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A solution-adaptive grid generation procedure is developed and applied to three-dimensional inviscid transonic fluid flow around complex geometries using a composite block grid structure. The adaption is based upon control functions in an elliptic grid generation system. The control function is constructed in a manner such that a proper grid network can be generated as a fluid flow solution is evolving. The grid network is boundary-conforming for accurate representation of boundary conditions. The procedure implemented allows orthogonality at boundaries for more accurate computations, while smoothness is implicit in the elliptic equations. The approach allows multiple-block grid systems to be constructed to treat complex configurations as well. The solution-adaptive computational procedure has been accomplished by coupling the elliptic grid generation technique with an implicit, finite volume, upwind Euler flow solver. In simulating transonic fluid flow around a finned body of revolution and a multiple store configuration, the grid systems adapt to pressure gradients in the flow field. Results obtained show that the technique is capable of generating grid networks proper for the simulations of aerodynamics around complex configurations. Keywords: Computational fluid dynamics, Euler equations. (kr).

Book excerpt: The AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel sponsored this Symposium to provide a survey of the capabilities of the CFD community for griding complex 3-D configurations. The intent was to provide some insight to the present state of grid generation for complex configurations to help assess whether this task presents a long-term stumbling block to the routine use of CFD in aerodynamic applications. To this end, the meeting was structured in five sessions: General Surveys, Algebraic Grid Generation, Block Structured Meshes, Multiblock-Adaptive Meshes and Unstructured Meshes. Thwenty-two papers from these sessions amply gemonstrated that the viability of a numerical solution depends directly on the quality of the mesh and surface representation as measured by its spacing and resolution. Of Particular interest was the mesh generation for complex configurations, such as advanced fighter or transport aircraft, missiles and space vehicles, where complex geometries and/or complex flowfields have to be analysed. Results from this meeting indicate that geometry discretization and generation of meshes for complex 3-D configurations in aerospace will continue to be time- and cost-consuming operations fro some time to come.

Book excerpt: Computational Fluid Dynamics research, especially for aeronautics, continues to be a rewarding and industrially relevant field of applied science in which to work. An enthusiastic international community of expert CFD workers continue to push forward the frontiers of knowledge in increasing number. Applications of CFD technology in many other sectors of industry are being successfully tackled. The aerospace industry has made significant investments and enjoys considerable benefits from the application of CFD to its products for the last two decades. This era began with the pioneering work ofMurman and others that took us into the transonic (potential flow) regime for the first time in the early 1970's. We have also seen momentous developments of the digital computer in this period into vector and parallel supercomputing. Very significant advances in all aspects of the methodology have been made to the point where we are on the threshold of calculating solutions for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for complete aircraft configurations. However, significant problems and challenges remain in the areas of physical modelling, numerics and computing technology. The long term industrial requirements are captured in the U. S. Governments 'Grand Challenge' for 'Aerospace Vehicle Design' for the 1990's: 'Massively parallel computing systems and advanced parallel software technology and algorithms will enable the development and validation of multidisciplinary, coupled methods. These methods will allow the numerical simulation and design optimisation of complete aerospace vehicle systems throughout the flight envelope'.

Book excerpt: The goal of this research was to further develop zonal methods and three dimensional procedures for application of finite difference methods to solve complex aircraft configurations. For the task of three dimensional grid generation both elliptic and hyperbolic methods were developed. A chimera grid scheme, that is, the use of overset multiple grid systems, was also tested in two dimensions. In zonal methods several new algorithms were developed. These included combining transonic potential codes with thin layer Navier-Stokes equations, unsteady transonic potential, Euler and vector potential codes. This report summarizes the various numerical algorithms that were studied. (Author).

Book excerpt: A set of computer programs for 3-D unstructured grid generation, fluid flow calculations, and flow field visualization was developed. The grid generation program, called VGRID3D, generates grids over complex configurations using the advancing front method. In this method, the point and element generation is accomplished simultaneously, VPLOT3D is an interactive, menudriven pre- and post-processor graphics program for interpolation and display of unstructured grid data. The flow solver, VFLOW3D, is an Euler equation solver based on an explicit, two-step, Taylor-Galerkin algorithm which uses the Flux Corrected Transport (FCT) concept for a wriggle-free solution. Using these programs, increasingly complex 3-D configurations of interest to aerospace community were gridded including a complete Space Transportation System comprised of the space-shuttle orbitor, the solid-rocket boosters, and the external tank. Flow solutions were obtained on various configurations in subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flow regimes. Book excerpt: This paper describes a general three dimensional block structured grid generation technique which has been coupled with an Euler algorithm to simulate the flow around complicated aerodynamic configurations. The flow field is subdivided into a set of non-overlapping blocks and grids are generated simultaneously in all of the blocks using an elliptic grid generation method. Appropriate boundary conditions applied on the face of the blocks ensure that grid lines pass smoothly between blocks leaving the grid globally smooth. Details of the surface and field grid generation are given and techniques to control the position of grid points are highlighted. Grid topologies for complicated civil and military configurations are discussed. Examples are given of grids for complicated configurations and some results of flow calculations on block structured grids are shown.
