Book excerpt: The objective of this research has been the investigation of the nature of three-dimensional motion associated with the interaction between rotating axial flow blade rows and the working fluid, i. e. air, and the quantitative determination of the effect of three-dimensional motion upon the process of energy conversion. The investigation pertained to both the subsonic and the transonic regime of flow in turbomachines. It has been pursued by the theoretical as well as the experimental approach. Theoretical studies have been concerned with the analysis of compression shocks in regions of flow with an upstream total enthalpy gradient and with analogous patterns encountered in the flow relative to the blades of a rotating blade grid. Computations of the flow field behind threedimensional oblique shocks were carried through parallel to corresponding experimental studies.

Book excerpt: Worked Examples in Turbomachinery (Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics) is a publication designed to supplement the materials in Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics of Turbomachinery, Second Edition. The title provides detailed solution for the unanswered problems from the main textbook. The text first covers dimensional analysis, and then proceeds to tackling thermodynamics. Next, the selection discusses two-dimensional cascades. The text also talks about axial flow turbines and compressors, along with the three-dimensional flow in axial turbo machines. Chapter 7 covers centrifugal compressor and pumps, while Chapter 8 tackles radial flow turbines. The book will be of great use to students of mechanical engineering, particularly those who have access to the main textbook.

Book excerpt: While strongly three dimensional and highly unsteady nature of the flow in axial turbines has, until recently, defied in-depth analysis, the benefits that can be realized from an improved capability to predict the aerodynamics and heat transfer in turbines are numerous. These benefits include improved performance through higher efficiency, higher thrust-to-weight ratio through higher turbine inlet temperature, and improved durability through more precise predictions of local heat load. This program was particularly interested in the aerodynamic mechanisms affecting attenuation of a radial temperature profile in the flow as it passed through the turbine. The radial temperature profile in the flow exiting a combustor and entering a turbine can range from compressor exit temperature (approx = 1100 F) near the hub and tip end walls to a maximum (as high as 3200 F) in the midspan region. The heat load at any location on the turbine airfoils or end walls depends strongly on the local gas temperature at that location; hence the mixing, or attenuation, of the inlet temperature profile is of critical importance. This program has advanced the state-of-the-art by providing: 1) an exhaustive aerodynamic data base for the three dimensional flow in a large scale axial turbine; 2) an exhaustive data base documenting the mixing of a simulated combustor exit temperature profile as it passed through the turbine; and 3) an assessment of sota three dimensional time accurate, Navier-Stokes prediction of the flow in the turbine stage. Keywords: Temperature redistribution. (EDC).

Book excerpt: A general theory of steady three-dimensional flow of a nonviscous fluid in subsonic and supersonic turbomachines having arbitrary hub and casing shapes and a finite number of blades is presented, The solution of the three-dimensional direct and inverse problem is obtained by investigating an appropriate combination of flows on relative stream surfaces whose intersections with a z-plane either upstream of or some- where inside the blade row form a circular arc or a radial line. The equations obtained to describe the fluid flow on these stream surfaces show clearly the several approximations involved in ordinary two-dimensional treatments. They also lead to a solution of the three-dimensional problem in a mathematically two-dimensional manner through iteration. The equation of continuity is combined with the equation of motion in either the tangential or the radial direction through the use of a stream function defined on the surface, and the resulting equation is chosen as the principal equation for such flows. The character of this equation depends on the relative magnitude of the local velocity of sound and a certain combination of velocity components of the fluid. A general method to solve this equation by both hand and high-speed digital machine computations when the equation is elliptic or hyperbolic is described. The theory is applicable to both irrotational and rotational absolute flow at the inlet of the blade row and at both design and off-design operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of three-dimensional flow in axial turbomachines was extended to include the effects of variable hub and tip radii such as occur in the entrance stages of conventional axial flow compressors and, to a larger extent, in mixed flow compressors. The problem is simplified by assuming an infinite number of infinitely thin blades in each blade row, so that axially symmetric fluid motion results. The effect of variable hub and tip radii of the annulus walls is investigated when the tangential velocities are small but arbitrary, and when they are large but of special form. The combined effect of heavily loaded inlet guide vanes and variable hub radius is also investigated for the case in which the inlet guide vanes impart a motion very nearly of the solid-body type. The boundary conditions for the variable hub radius require linearization, thus restricting the magnitude of posturbation to be induced by the wall. Finally, the effect of a loaded blade row placed behind the inlet guide vane is determined. The local axial and tangential velocities induced by the variable wall radius were found to be of the same general magnitude as the velocities induced by a normal rotor or stator blade row. Although the forms of the solutions are somewhat complex for routine application in turbomachine design, a sufficiently simple approximate result is obtained for one case and it is indicated how the method of approximation may be extended. This book was released on 1968 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic position of aerodynamics of turbomachines are given in the book. The problem of three-dimensional flow of a working medium in bladed apparatuses is examined, and methods of calculation of two-dimensional flows are given. The flowing around of airfoil cascades is investigated, and the methods of their designing are given. There is discussed the general theory of flow of a working medium in blade apparatuses of turbomachines in its contemporary state. Examples of the solution to the basic problems are given. On the basis of the discussed methods of calculation, it is possible not only to improve the aerodynamics of the blades but also consider the mutual influence of the stages and calculate the universal characteristics. One chapter is devoted to methods of calculation of foil cascades obtaining widespread use in turbine constructions, which were founded on the solution of integral equations. The final chapter discusses the method of designing subsonic and transonic airfoil cascades. Examples of the calculations are carried out in the international system of units. (Author).
