Book Synopsis A Modern Oboist's Guide to Cadenza Composition, in the Classical Style, for Concerto in C. K 314 (285d) by W. A. Mozart by : Nathan Michael Ingrim
Download or read book A Modern Oboist's Guide to Cadenza Composition, in the Classical Style, for Concerto in C. K 314 (285d) by W. A. Mozart written by Nathan Michael Ingrim and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern oboist is frequently called upon to perform concertos from the Classical Era. Often, this means performing the Oboe Concerto in C; K. 314 by W.A. Mozart. Theorists and oboists alike have extensively researched the form, history, and performance practice of this work throughout the years. However, performers have paid little consideration to how Mozart intended cadenzas to operate within this concerto. The cadenza, defined as "A virtuosic passage inserted near the end of a concerto movement or aria, usually indicated by the appearance of a fermata over an inconclusive chord such as the tonic 6-4," may be written by the composer or improvised by the performer. While the Barenreiter Urtext and Boosey and Hawkes editions claim one-to-one accuracy with Mozart's original Oboe Concerto manuscript, there is no evidence of Mozart having composed original cadenzas. Consequently, the oboist is required to actively participate in the compositional process and craft their own cadenzas. The problem oboists face as they consider cadenzas for this concerto, then, is twofold. There is inherently a high degree of subjectivity in "tasteful" cadenza composition, and modern oboists are often ill-equipped when it comes to composition in the true Classical style. This project will seek to remove elements of subjectivity by analyzing Mozart's notated cadenzas in other concertos as well as the writings of notable pedagogues. In doing so, this project will provide a guidebook for the modern oboist seeking instruction in the composition of Classical cadenzas.
Download or read book Authenticities written by Peter Kivy and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In his latest book on the aesthetics of music, Peter Kivy presents an argument not for authenticity but for authenticities of performance, including authenticities of intention, sound, practice, and the authenticity of personal interpretation in performance.... As usual, Kivy's work is beautifully written, well argued, and provocative."—Notes"Kivy has provided a sorely needed framework for all future discussion of the authenticity matter. This is his best book, a major contribution to performance studies and to musical aesthetics; likely it will be studied and cited for generations."—Choice"Written in lively prose, with a keen sense of reality, [this volume] ought to be of interest not only to philosophers and musicologists, but to all serious lovers of music."—Roger Scruton, Times Literary Supplement"The consistent theme running through Kivy's book is the need for interpretation as the personal authenticity and authority of the performer against the ideology both of the composer as genius and of the puritanical devotion to the authority of the text of the early music devotees.... This is a most valuable book, one which constantly surprises and delights through its philosophical insights and informed musical understanding."—British Journal of Aesthetics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A wonderful collection that gives Mozart a voice as a son, husband, brother and friend." —New York Times Book Review "Mozart's honesty, his awareness of his own genius and his contempt for authority all shine out from these letters."—Sunday Times (London). " In Mozart's Letters, Mozart's Life, Robert Spaethling presents "Mozart in all the rawness of his driving energies" (Spectator), preserved in the "zany, often angry effervescence" of his writing (Observer). Where other translators have ignored Mozart's atrocious spelling and tempered his foul language, "Robert Spaethling's new translations are lively and racy, and do justice to Mozart's restlessly inventive mind" (Daily Mail). Carefully selected and meticulously annotated, this collection of letters "should be on the shelves of every music lover" (BBC Music Magazine).
