Download or read book Our Ancient Foe written by Ronald L. Kohl and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Our sworn enemy goes by many names. Scripture calls him our "adversary" who prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. He "doth seek to work us woe"--and our testimonies and lives hang in the balance. Yet Christians are often ignorant of his plans, power, and even presence, and are easily caught off guard. Are we taking Satan seriously? Do we know how to stand firm against the prince of this world? Here, respected pastor-scholars shine the light of Scripture on our ancient foe, identifying who he is, explaining how he operates, exposing his deceit, and celebrating his final demise. They will equip you to more fully understand the war we are engaged in and how you can "resist the devil" in the power of Christ"--From publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Suffering and the Sovereignty of God by : John Piper
Download or read book Suffering and the Sovereignty of God written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2006-09-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, 9/11, a tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and many other tragedies have shown us that the vision of God in today's churches in relation to evil and suffering is often frivolous. Against the overwhelming weight and seriousness of the Bible, many Christians are choosing to become more shallow, more entertainment-oriented, and therefore irrelevant in the face of massive suffering. In Suffering and the Sovereignty of God, contributors John Piper, Joni Eareckson Tada, Steve Saint, Carl Ellis, David Powlison, Dustin Shramek, and Mark Talbot explore the many categories of God's sovereignty as evidenced in his Word. They urge readers to look to Christ, even in suffering, to find the greatest confidence, deepest comfort, and sweetest fellowship they have ever known.

Book Synopsis Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God by : Marilyn McCord Adams
Download or read book Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God written by Marilyn McCord Adams and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When confronted by horrendous evil, even the most pious believer may question not only life's worth but also God's power and goodness. A distinguished philosopher and a practicing minister, Marilyn McCord Adams has written a highly original work on a fundamental dilemma of Christian thought—how to reconcile faith in God with the evils that afflict human beings. Adams argues that much of the discussion in analytic philosophy of religion over the last forty years has offered too narrow an understanding of the problem. The ground rules accepted for the discussion have usually led philosophers to avert their gaze from the worst—horrendous—evils and their devastating impact on human lives. They have agreed to debate the issue on the basis of religion-neutral values, and have focused on morals, an approach that—Adams claims—is inadequate for formulating and solving the problem of horrendous evils. She emphasizes instead the fruitfulness of other evaluative categories such as purity and defilement, honor and shame, and aesthetics. If redirected, philosophical reflection on evil can, Adams's book demonstrates, provide a valuable approach not only to theories of God and evil but also to pastoral care.

Book Synopsis Battles in the Promised Land by : Jacob Haywood
Download or read book Battles in the Promised Land written by Jacob Haywood and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians have the underlying belief that if they are truly following Jesus, they will be exempt from suffering in this life. As a result, they are often surprised when they go through hard times and are likely to experience doubt, hopelessness, and anger toward God. But what if God’s chosen means of blessing was through suffering? Would you choose that path? Through the author’s personal story of suffering the loss of his twin sister in the prime of her life and through biblical examples of sufferers who have gone before, Haywood outlines in this book how God is faithful amidst our suffering and how the abundant Christian life here on Earth is still possible if we are willing to fight for it. No matter the battle you are facing, know this: God is fighting with you—going before you, standing in front of you, and guarding behind you. Even in your suffering, he is leading you to the abundant life he has promised. Based on that reality, you can view whatever situation you are in with hope.

Book Synopsis Satan and God's Armor by : Robert B. Callahan Sr.
Download or read book Satan and God's Armor written by Robert B. Callahan Sr. and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apostle Paul leaves no stone unturned as he encourages, enlightens, and informs the Ephesian believers (and us) regarding their duties and responsibilities as Christ's followers. Yes, there are duties and responsibilities for professing Christians, just as there are duties and responsibilities in every phase of life whether it be as children/parents; employee/employer; student/teacher; or whatever field of endeavor one may pursue. The apostle is addressing those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and seek to follow Him, which as Paul knows is not easy. Therefore, in this portion of Scripture he stresses certain truths that will strengthen each and every Christian as they journey through life. The elements may sound simple to learn, but they are difficult to practice day in and day out. What are they? Obedience, discipline, priorities, knowing your heavenly Father (not just knowing about Him), being strong disciples in the faith, and separating ourselves. Developing these traits requires a commitment to adhere to Christ's teachings and commands. Paul then switches our attention from what we are to do as Christ's followers and states emphatically that we are to be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. "Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles [schemes] of the devil" (Eph 6:1-11). Paul states unequivocally that we are to prepare to wrestle this implacable foe, since we belong to Christ and are His followers. He describes Satan, his evil characteristics and malevolent intentions. Christ recognized him for what he is. Should we do less? Unfortunately, in today's world we ignore him and fail to realize the harm he inflicts on ourselves and others. Paul concludes this portion of Scripture on a high note. He urges us to be properly prepared; to recognize heresies; to watch and pray; to know the difference between false and true teachings; and to know the Lord Jesus Christ and what He experienced during His earthly ministry.

Book Synopsis Genuine Dialogue and Real Partnership by : Maurice Friedman
Download or read book Genuine Dialogue and Real Partnership written by Maurice Friedman and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-30 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building Genuine Community emphasizes a notion of a community in which people are bound together by a common life situation and a common purpose without using that common purpose as an exclusionary factor that distinguishes between those who belong and those who do not belong to the community. Without being scholarly, technical, or obscure, Building Genuine Community lays the foundation for true community, which is the seeking need of the age. True community is difficult to define. What makes some communities thrive and others fail? True community is not an ideal or a specific goal. Rather, it is a twofold direction of movementa movement within each particular structure of family, community, and society to discover the maximum possibilities of the confirmation of individuals as true others within that structure, as well as a movement from structure to structure toward more genuine community. Building Genuine Community proposes nothing less than to do away with the old and tired polarities of the individual versus society, individualism versus collectivism, competition versus cooperation, and free enterprise versus socialism. In place of all these ideals, this treatise confirms that otherness is the only meaningful direction of movement for friendship, marriage, family, community, and society within a democracy.
