The author lived nearly fifty years after its issue, and nearly sixty years after that of its first edition; and, while the whole of that time was spent in the careful study and diligent teaching of Holy Scripture, every year served to strengthen his belief in the correctness of what he has taught in this volume. Those who were privi leged with his intimacy are confident that, if he had lived to send forth a third edition, its features would be unaltered. Doubtless, some expository details he would have modified - indeed, some such were occasionally mentioned - but nothing of that nature has been or could be attempted by others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Apocalypse But let none of these things either stumble or discourage you; for, be assured, that "no strange thing has happened to you." The path you now tread, is that in which all the first churches walked, until Antichrist arose and corrupted the christian profession; and it will be again restored and become a "highway," when Antichrist shall be destroyed "by the brightness of the Lord's coming;" when "the cities of the nations fall," or, to speak without a figure, when all national establishments of Christianity are swept away, and the dissenting churches get rid of the leaven of Popery which still attaches to them. That much of this remains to be done, you, I am sure, will require no proof from me. While we find some of the strictest sect of our dissenters contending that the apostolic churches are no longer an example to us for our imitation in conducting the affairs of the kingdom of Christ; that though they were not without their use in the infancy of Christianity, or so long as it maintained its pristine purity, yet that now a new case has arisen, and to accommodate matters to this new order of things, it has become necessary to abandon the example of the apostolic churches, and to meet Antichrist half-way!!! - I say, so long as such monstrous opinions as these are broached in the face of the sun, and acted upon, the state of our dissenting churches must, in the very nature of things, become increasingly corrupt. May you, my brethren, ever be upon your guard against that accursed sophistry which would lead you to tamper with divine ordinances and institutions; you can be at no loss to trace it to its origin. Gen. iii. 1-5. Remember that those things were given you by the adorable Head of the church, to keep, and not to play fast and loose with, according as human weakness and caprice may dictate. And while all your affairs are conducted with charity, "do all things without murmurings and disputings, that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation; among whom may you shine as lights in the world, holding forth the word of life, that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that my labours among you have not been in vain." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Apocalypse, Vol. 1 That the Apocalypse is a book replete with difficulties, not only for the common reader but also for the critic and interpreter, no one will deny who has earnestly applied himself to the study of it. The sources of difficulty, in respect to the prophetic part of it, are obvious, and may easily be stated. The book is made up of one continued series of symbols, unaccompanied for the most part by such plain and explicit declarations with regard to their meaning, as are generally to be found in like cases among the prophetic writings of the Old Testament. The original and intelligent readers of this book, beyond all reasonable doubt, could understand the meaning of the writer; else why should he address his work to them? Their acquaintance with the circle of things in which he moved, and their familiarity with the objects to which he refers, superseded the use of all the critical apparatus which we must now employ. Not long, however, after the death of John, the Apocalypse appears to have been regarded as a wonderful and mysterious book, and to have given occasion to many strange and very discrepant interpretations. From that time down to the present, a similar stale of things has existed in regard to the exposition of this work. And even with all the light which recent critical study has thrown upon the Scriptures in general, there yet remains, as is generally confessed, not a little of obscurity resting upon the Apocalypse. Must this state of things always continue? This is a question of great interest to those, who believe that the Apocalypse rightfully belongs to the Canon of Scripture. Hitherto, scarcely any two original and independent expositors have been agreed, in respect to some points very important in their bearing upon the interpretation of the book. So long as the Apocalypse is regarded principally as an epitome of civil and ecclesiastical history, this must continue to be the case. Different minds will make the application of apocalyptic prophecies to different series of events, because there is something in each to which more or less of these prophecies is seemingly applicable. Such has always been the case, in past times, whenever this method of interpretation has been followed; and why should anything different from this be expected for the future? The consequence however has of course been, to create a kind of general distrust in the public mind, with regard to every effort made in order to explain the book in question. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discussions on the Apocalypse Dices retained have been revised in the light of later investigation, both on the Continent and in England while the Appendix on The Unity of the Apocalypse has been greatly enlarged. This last point had been treated very brie y in 1886, because at that date the unity of the book may be said to have been generally acknowledged, and attacks upon it, after having been suspended for a time, were then only beginning to be resumed. Two Discussions, one on The relation of the Apocalypse to the general Apocalyptic Literature of the first century, and one on The relation to one another of the seven Epistles to the Churches, in Chap. Ii. Iii. Have been added. The first of these is an effort to meet the difficulty felt by many, that the author of the Apocalypse cannot be St. John, if St. John be also the author of the fourth Gospel, because it would have been impossible, more particularly when the late date of the Apocalypse is accepted, for the same person to write, within the short period then allowed, two books differing so much both in form and expression. The second of these Discussions, the last in this volume, may, it is hoped, throw some light on the conception and structure of the Apocalypse as a whole, and thus help to prepare the reader for objections of various kinds, taken to a book in every respect so remarkable and unique. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apocalypse Translated and Expounded In the Exposition now offered, the author has followed a few leading principles deduced from the Holy Scriptures, and taught in substance by various patristic and modern writers. Thus the principle that in prophecies of "the times and the seasons," "days denote years," is recognised or implied in Scott's, Henry's, and Barnes' Commentaries; in Brown's Bible with Dr. H. Cooke's Notes; and in the prophetic interpretations of the Rev. Joseph Mede, Sir I. Newton, Bishops Newton and Waldegrave, Revs. Dr. D. Brown, Dr. Fairbairn, Dr. Keith, Dr. Boothroyd, Dr. Gumming, Dr. A. M'Leod, E. B. Elliott, Jonathan Edwards, R. Culbertson, G. S. Faber, etc. Another principle closely allied to this is thus propounded by Fr. Turretine: "Christ suggested to His servant those things which were to happen even to the end of the age." And Calvin repudiates the opinion of those who sum up the kingdom of Christ in 1000 (human) years, as an error branding with contumely Christ and His kingdom. The principle of chronological continuative fulfilment of the apocalyptic prophecies is maintained by the great majority of eminent interpreters since the Reformation. The kindred principle of the spiritual nature of the first resurrection is asserted by Augustine: "All those who have part in the first resurrection lived and reigned with Christ 1000 years, that is, in the present age. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Apocalypse These Essays are an extension of a book written by me in the year 1905, and published in January, 1906, entitled, The Apocalypse, The Antichrist, and The End. They are meant to show the great importance of the date of the book in every department of its exegesis. Every scrap of evidence we possess is in favour of dating the book in the year 67 A.D. If we accept that date, the book unfolds its message in an intelligible way. If we do not, it remains, more or less, a mystery. It has been generally assumed by Catholic writers that the Apocalypse was written in the year 96, because St Irenaeus, who lived in the second century, is supposed to have handed it down as the tradition of the early Church. But St Irenaeus did not say that the Apocalypse was written, or that the visions were seen, at the close of Domitian's reign; but that "The Apocalypse" was seen then. The Apocalypse, meaning "The Revelation," was the title of the book which St John wrote. What St Irenaeus said, therefore, was that the book was seen at the close of Domitian's reign. This does not necessarily mean that the book was written then. A detailed explanation of this matter is given in the second Essay. As all these Essays deal, practically, with the same subject, there is some repetition, which is regrettable, but unavoidable.
