Book excerpt: Alan Dahl believes the world would be a bit brighter if daily we all applied the lessons that we should have learned when we were younger. As he looks into the past post-retirement, he not only reflects on the things he did well, but also the mistakes he made and lessons learned as a result. Now he is ready to share his wisdom with his grandchildren—and anyone else interested in listening to someone who has walked the trail of life before them. Through a series of heartfelt reflections, Dahl leans on his personal experiences to impart valuable teachings to the younger generation. Set in a cozy glow of firelight, he offers his Littles lessons and insights for navigating life’s choices and challenges while encouraging personal growth. Through his timeless wisdom, Littles will learn how to use their smarts to dig deep and know what is really going on around them, why failing is an essential part of realizing success in life, how to achieve financial independence, preserve relationships, align with God’s plan, and much more. Fireside Reflections shares a Papa’s journey as he offers wisdom, fosters a strong bond between generations, and nurtures a deeper understanding of life’s experiences.

Book excerpt: It's time to create a new normal. It's time to leave behind practices that don't best serve all learners and educators, and to prioritize what matters most: relationships, connection, purpose, flexibility, agency, and authentic learning. Education must evolve. Looking to learners will help us see what's working, what's challenging, and, ultimately, what's possible. To ensure that all of those learners thrive, we'll need to use insight from our own experiences, research from the field, and new tools and approaches to adapt our practices. In Evolving Education, Dr. Katie Martin advocates for a much-needed shift to a learner-centered teaching model. Learner-centered education creates purposeful, personalized, authentic, and competency-based experiences that help students develop skills that empower them to learn, grow, and solve problems that matter to them and others. Following on Martin's previous book, Learner-Centered Innovation, Evolving Education offers a deeper dive into how educators can harness new technologies, learning sciences, and pedagogy that center learners and learning. After all, Martin argues, if we truly want to develop knowledge, habits, and skills in students, we have to know them, love them, and help them see the full beauty of who they are and what they can become. Endorsements "Evolving Education clearly articulates how to redefine success, create powerful learning experiences, and support them with enabling conditions. This would make a great book study for any school faculty or community group." -Tom Vander Ark, CEO of Getting Smart "Katie Martin absolutely nailed it in Evolving Education. A learner-centered paradigm requires that we examine beliefs and biases and disrupt systems that do not serve each and every learner. This work requires innovation, creativity, flexibility, and heart. This book is the perfect mix of incredible storytelling, inspiration, and concrete strategy." -Katie Novak, EdD, author of UDL and Blended Learning

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School and Fireside It is with reluctance that the author yields to the entreaties of his fellow teachers and students to publish this record of the Normal instructions given by him at the Brigham Young Academy, Provo, during the fifteen years from 1876 to 1891. No attempt has been made to present startling ideas, or to urge radical changes in existing educational systems. The intention is rather to place on record the characteristic features of the Normal work done in the Brigham Young Academy during that period. While no claim is made to striking originality, it is thought that these features are nevertheless sufficiently marked to distinguish them from the prevailing tendencies of the age. The author has availed himself of the best ideas of educators, as far as they are in accord with the principles of moral and religious training, and has not been unmindful, on the other hand, of the achievements of science in the educational field. Special attention has been paid to the purposes, organizations and methods of our Church Schools, Mutual Improvement Associations, Sunday Schools and Primaries, as the corner-stones of our educational system. It will be observed that theological, scholastic and domestic education are treated as inseparable. This thought underlies the work from beginning to end, hence its title "School and Fireside." Founder's Day of the Brigham Young Academy, October 16, 1894. The design of this work is not to add to the great number of valuable text books already existing, but to plead for the cause of true education, the education of the whole man. Teachers and students, who are presumed to be devoted to this sacred cause without any urging on my part, will, I trust, welcome this book of reference, while members of the home circle - those indispensable co-workers of ours - will recognize in this endeavor to bring about a union of the school and fireside, a desire on my part to furnish information that shall make the efforts of both teachers and lay members tend to one common end - the end looked forward to with unfaltering faith by our people. Book excerpt: For generations, we've been stuck with a cookie-cutter mold for success that requires us to be the same as everyone else, only better. This "standard formula" works for some people but leaves most of us feeling disengaged and frustrated. As much as we might dislike the standard formula, it seems like there's no other practical path to financial security and a fulfilling life. But what if there is? In the Dark Horse Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, bestselling author and acclaimed thought leader Todd Rose and neuroscientist Ogi Ogas studied women and men who achieved impressive success even though nobody saw them coming. Dark horses blaze their own trail to a life of happiness and prosperity. Yet what is so remarkable is that hidden inside their seemingly one-of-a-kind journeys are practical principles for achieving success that work for anyone, no matter who you are or what you hope to achieve. This mold-breaking approach doesn't depend on you SAT scores, who you know, or how much money you have. The secret is a mindset that can be expressed in plain English: Harness your individuality in the pursuit of fulfillment to achieve excellence. In Dark Horse, Rose and Ogas show how the four elements of the dark horse mindset empower you to consistently make the right choices that fit your unique interests, abilities, and circumstances and will guide you to a life of passion, purpose, and achievement.

Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive and practical guide to the core skills, activities, and behaviors that are required of product managers in modern technology companies. Product management is one of the fastest growing and most sought-after roles by job seekers and companies alike. The availability of trained and experienced talent can barely keep up with the accelerating demand for new and improved technology products. People from nontechnical and technical backgrounds alike are eager to master this exciting new role. The Influential Product Manager teaches product managers how to behave at each stage of the product life cycle to achieve the best outcome for the customer. Product managers are under pressure to drive spectacular results, often without wielding much direct power or authority. If you don't know how to influence people at all levels of the organization, how will you create the best possible product? This comprehensive entry-level textbook distills over twenty years of hard-won field experience and industry knowledge into lessons that will empower new product managers to act like pros right out of the gate. With teaching experience both from UC Berkeley and Lynda.com, the author boils down the most complex topics into principles that are easy to memorize and apply. This book methodically documents the tools product managers everywhere use to align their teams with market needs and organizational goals. From setting priorities to capturing requirements to navigating trade-offs, this book makes it easy. Not only will your product succeed, you'll succeed, too, when you read the final chapter on advancing your career. Let your product's success become your success!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Rademacher wishes someone had handed him this sort of book along with his teaching degree: a clear-eyed, frank, boots-on-the ground account of what he was getting into. But first he had to write it. And as 2014’s Minnesota Teacher of the Year, Rademacher knows what he’s talking about. Less a how-to manual than a tribute to an impossible and impossibly rewarding profession, It Won’t Be Easy captures the experience of teaching in all its messy glory. The book follows a year of teaching, with each chapter tackling a different aspect of the job. Pulling no punches (and resisting no punch lines), he writes about establishing yourself in a new building; teaching meaningful classes, keeping students a priority; investigating how race, gender, and identity affect your work; and why it’s a good idea to keep an extra pair of pants at school. Along the way he answers the inevitable and the unanticipated questions, from what to do with Google to how to tell if you’re really a terrible teacher, to why “Keep your head down” might well be the worst advice for a new teacher. Though directed at prospective and newer teachers, It Won’t Be Easy is mercifully short on jargon and long on practical wisdom, accessible to anyone—teacher, student, parent, pundit—who is interested in a behind-the-curtain look at teaching and willing to understand that, while there are no simple answers, there is power in learning to ask the right questions.
