Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Using sound reason and evidence―not religion―award-winning author Frank Turek shows that virtually everyone is hurt by same-sex marriage and transgenderism, even those who identify as LGBTQ. Turek provides concise answers to objections about equal rights, discrimination, being born a certain way, and the charge that people who disagree are homophobic or transphobic. He shows how the quest to obliterate all sexual distinctions is self-contradictory and how the march to transition children is producing horrific and irreversible consequences. Turek’s message is direct but respectful―correct, not politically correct. It is a message we must not ignore.

Book excerpt: In CBT Made Simple, two psychologists and experts in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) offer the ultimate “how-to” manual based on the principles of effective adult learning. Structured around these evidence-based principles, this user-friendly guide will help you learn CBT and deliver it to your clients in the most optimal way. CBT is a popular and proven-effective treatment for several mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anger problems. However, there are no evidence-based learning techniques to teach it—until now. This simple, pragmatic guide offers everything you need to know about CBT: what it is, how it works, and how to implement it in session. CBT Made Simple provides a user-friendly, practical approach to learning CBT using up-to-the-minute teaching methods and learning tools—in particular, the “effective adult learning model,” which promotes interactive learning, experiential learning, and self-reflection. Each chapter presents key elements of CBT in clear, accessible language, and includes client dialogues—including explanations of the therapist’s thinking process in relation to various interventions—and clinical examples. Practical exercises are incorporated throughout, enabling you to practice and consolidate your learning. In addition, each chapter mimics the structure of an actual CBT session. If you are a clinician or student interested in learning more about CBT, this book—a new addition to the New Harbinger Made Simple series that includes ACT Made Simple and DBT Made Simple—has everything you need to hit the ground running. Why not make it a part of your professional library?

Walk this journey with the author as she tells of trials that began in childhood and were perpetuated through her life until she ultimately found peace in trusting the sovereignty and goodness of God. Can we learn to deal with those who say they love us, but whose actions say otherwise? Is there a way back from escaping with alcohol and dealing with adultery and divorce? Out of the Wilderness uses poetry to reveal a poverty of spirit that is replaced by trust in and reliance on God. Our Heavenly Father equips us with many tools and weapons. Use all of them including these two: pray scripture, God’s own words, and as difficult as it may be, pray for those by whom you have been spitefully used. The fruit is bountiful.

Book excerpt: This unique guide pairs the expertise of a trained child psychologist with the fresh voice and perspective of her young daughter to help children and their parents embark on an emotional regulation journey while strengthening their relationships and nurturing their confidence to overcome life obstacles. The young readers will learn, alongside their caregivers, how to set goals, deal with setbacks, and live a life in line with their values. Dr. Dessy and Lora’s guide will help us better understand ourselves and our loved ones, recognizing why we feel and act the way we do and deepen our empathy and care for each other. Using a holistic approach, Dr. Dessy offers step-by-step guidelines on managing strong emotions anytime and anyplace. With simple language and fun illustrations, Dr. Dessy and Lora explain how our brains work, with Aimie (the amygdala) making us feel, Brightie (the cerebral cortex) making us think, and Dooie (the pre-frontal cortex) making us act. By keenly understanding how these parts of us act and interact, and practicing the lessons and exercises offered in this guide, you and your child will be empowered to face fears in any setting. The toolkit with strategies will help children and other family members enjoy events, places, and situations avoided in the past or suffered through because of baseless worries and a thousand “what ifs.” Intended primarily for parents/caregivers with children aged eight to twelve and mental health professionals, this guide addresses a growing societal problem: Research shows that anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health conditions worldwide, impacting the quality of life of millions of children and their families. But whether it’s anxiety issues or any other strong emotions, this book will help people get a handle on why they feel the things they feel and learn what to do about it. Indeed, the readers will be equipped to use proven science-based strategies to cultivate a resilient mindset preparing them to tackle life’s biggest challenges.

Would you like your body pains and suffering to go away? Would you like luck come your way? Would you like positive things to happen in mysterious ways in your life more often than not? Then this book is for you. There are two methods given in this book and they will help you to achieve these goals (1) the first method is to control your physical and thinking karma and (2) the second method is a copyright (by me) and it will guide you to transform your thoughts from physical-thoughts to non-physical-thoughts (divine/higher-power/God). I did this in 6-9 months. You do it once and then maintain it. When you transform your thoughts then you throw away your thoughts such that all your thoughts, happy, sad and negative thoughts are thrown away. This way all your thinking goes away. Your mind does not go blank but you replace your mind with non-physical thoughts. Once you have accomplished this then you have new thinking without your baggage. You will forget your past. At this level, your karma will improve and go positive, and as this happens, your horrible night dreams will become positive. At time moves forward, your body pains will slowly go away. If you get hurt in sports then you will heal faster. This is a very powerful method. As time passes, you may be able to establish communication with divine/higher-power/God and you may begin to receive bells and whistles at some point. If this happens then you will be an extremely happy person.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical reality has been the focus of most scientific studies. But, humans have always been curious about how awareness, consciousness, sub-consciousness, or how the mind works. How are thoughts formed? Am I the mind? Is the brain responsible for consciousness? Are thoughts consciousness? Are there sub-conscious thoughts? Is the observable universe the truth? Is there a truth beyond reality? What is difference between a living being and a non-living being? What is the soul? If it is not about consciousness, the next curiosity has been about space, time and matter. Is space finite or infinite? If space is expanding, where is it expanding into? What is time? Are there extra dimensions to space? Is time the 4th dimension? How many dimensions are present? How does space and time relate to consciousness? If consciousness was not present, would there be space and time? Is this whole universe just a thought? Is there a consolidated thought that ties all living beings together? Surya Siddanta, the ancient sanskrit literature, when translated in the context of "emergence of reality", answers just these questions. The concepts presented are surprisingly different and highly thought provoking, making us question our own science which we hold as undisputable. The Surya Siddanta describes the various steps involved the formation of reality, as it traverses from that incomprehensible, unmanifested qualityless truth to the formation of an Individual. This book explores the ideas, the principles and concepts presented in Surya Siddanta, and explains the steps presented with equivalent examples as seen in technologies created by us.
