Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoroughbreds Less than a hundred miles from the city of Gotham, across broad green fields, dotted into squares and oblong valleys by full-leafed maple, and elm, and mulberry, was the village of Brookfield. A hundred years of expansion in the surrounding land had acted inversely with the little hamlet, and had pinched it into a hermitical isolation. The Brookfieldians had discovered a huge beetle in the amber of their serene existence; it was really the Reverend Dolman who had unearthed the monster. The beetle in the amber was horse racing, and the prime offender, practically the sole culprit, was John Porter. By an inconsistent twist of fate he was known as Honest John. His father before him had raced in old Kentucky to considerable purpose, and with the full vigor of a man who races for sport; and so to the son John, in consequence, had come little beyond a not-to-beeradicated love of thoroughbreds. To race squarely, honestly, and to the glory of high-couraged horses was to him as much a matter of religion as the consistent guardianship of parish morals was to the Reverend George Dolman. Therefore, two men of strong beliefs were set on opposite sides of the fence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Thoroughbred For the existence of this thing which we call the thoroughbred horse of America, we, in common with all countries of civilization, must give thanks to England. There is not at this day galloping upon the turf of any land under the sun a single animal worthy of the name of race-horse which does not go back through generations to an original English foundation. The American turf is only the English turf transplanted, with some alterations, to a new soil. Our whole instinct for racing comes from our English and Irish ancestry, and we were the first country outside of England itself to begin the breeding of horses for purposes of the turf and for their general improvement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thoroughbred: His Breeding and Rearing In the Derby blind justice is personified in the winning post. The trial is severe, and there is neither fashion nor fancy in the result. This it is that gives to the English thoroughbred horse a value for racing pur poses unequalled - and looked for in vain - among auv other species of animal in creation, and I venture to hope that the racing authorities in Australia will fol low the example of England and make the Derby the greatest and most valuable race in Australia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making the American Thoroughbred: Especially in Tennessee, 1800-1845Every age and every nation has certain characteristic vices, which prevail almost universally, which scarcely any person scruples to avow, and which even rigid moralists but faintly censure. Succeeding genera tions change the fashion of their morals, with the fashion of their hats and their coaches; take some other kind of wickedness under their pat ronage, and wonder at the depravity of their ancestors. Macaulay. If I were to begin life again, I would go on the turf to get friends. They seem to me the only people who hold close together. I don't know why; it may be that each knows something that might hang the other, but the eflect is delightful and most peculiar. - harriet, lady ashburton, to lord houghton.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Influence of the Thoroughbred Horse It only remains for me to express my gratitude to the many kind friends who have aided me in various ways: Dr James Cossar Ewart, Regius Professor Of Natural History in the University of Edinburgh, has given me much of his time and has read through all my proofs, and twice through those Of the first two chapters; whilst Mr R. I. Pocock, F the Superintendent of the Zoological Society's Garden, Regent's Park, has given me valuable aid by reading the proofs Of the chapter on the Living Equidae. Mr A. E. Shipley, Fellow Of Christ's College, and University Lecturer in In vertebrate Zoology, and editor Of the Cambridge Biological Series, has also read the proofs and has aided me with various suggestions. Had it not been for their criticism and advice the shortcomings Of this book, of which no one can be more sensible than the writer, would have been still more numerous; but for the many that remain I alone am responsible. TO Dr W. L. H. Duckworth, Fellow Of Jesus College, University Lecturer in Physical Anthropology, I am indebted for various important references, and above all for having called my attention to a hitherto unpublished head and neck of a quagga in the Elgin Museum, which I figure and describe (pp. 438 Mr A. W. Howitt, Hon. D.sc., the well-known Australian ethno logist, Of Metung, Victoria, has supplied me with the valuable account Of the feral horses Of Eastern Victoria, which I have embodied; Dr R. S. Conway, Professor Of Latin in Manchester University, and late Fellow Of Gonville and Caius College. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Up, up, brother Helios! She would cry. It is time for you to begin your journey again. Up, and delight the world once more with your shin ing morning face and your life-giving presence! Then Helios would hasten to the meadows where his steeds were feeding, and would call them each by name: Come hither, beautiful creatures! Hasten, for Aurora calleth. E65, thou glowing one!
