Book excerpt: For the identification of a flowering plant the first step usually is to discover to which family it belongs. With some experience, the families commonly encountered in one's area of interest are soon known, but when dealing with specimens from other places, notably those from the vast and rich subtropics and tropics, there is much less certainty. The pertinent literature is often not readily available as it is often found only in expensive, rare or obscure books, or journals, present only in a few specialized institutes. Basically only a few keys to the families of flowering plants of the world have ever been produced, the best known of which at present is Hutchinson's Key to the families of flowering plants (1973); less well-known are Lemee's Tableau analytique des genres monocotyledones (1941) (incl. Gymnosperms) and his Tableau analytique des genres dicotyledones (1943), and Hansen and Rahn's Determination of Angiosperm families by means of a punched-card system (Dansk Bot. Ark. 26, 1969, with additions and corrections in Bot. Tidsskr. 67, 1972, 152-153, and Ibid. 74 1979, 177-178). Of note also are Davies and Cullen's The identification of flowering plant families, 2nd ed. (1979), which, however, deals only with the families native or cultivated in North Temperate regions, and Joly's Chaves de identifi~iio das familias de plantas vasculares que ocorrem no Brasil, 3rd ed. (1977), which may be useful in other tropical areas too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malayan flora is one of the richest in the world. This book gives a brief systematic account of all the major groups of seed plants classified under 41 orders and 178 families which are represented by native or naturalised plants in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. Within each order, a list of families, an account of the diagnostic characters, a key to the families, and a brief note on the systematic position, the evolutionary trends or other points of interest, are included. Within each family, a simple description, a short note on the distribution, and, in most cases, a key to the Malayan genera are presented. For easy reference, two appendices containing a list of orders and family names in Malay and Chinese, a simple artificial key to the common Malayan families, and a glossary are also provided.

The majority of the annotations are for currently available in-print or electronic reference works. A comprehensive author/title and a separate subject index make locating specific entries simple. With materials ranging from those selected for the informed layperson to those for the specialist, this new edition reflects the momentous transition from print to electronic information resources. It is an appropriate purchase for public, college, university, and professional libraries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the tenth in the series, comprises modern treatments for the families and genera of the eudicot orders Sapindales and Cucurbitales. The circumscription of the orders, families and genera conforms to the most recent systematic studies. The family treatments include descriptions of the families and the genera, genera classification keys, discussions of relationships and data on their morphology, reproductive biology, distribution, ecology and economic importance. Sapindales and Cucurbitales, as understood in this volume, comprise 16 families with 637 genera and roughly 9,240 species. Sapindales include large tropical and southern temperate tree families such as the Anacardiaceae, Sapindaceae (these in the modern circumscription, which includes Aceraceae and Hippocastanaceae), Meliaceae and Rutaceae, which have long been considered to be closely related. Cucurbitales represent a relatively new ordinal concept; apart from some small woody groups, the order contains two large families, Cucurbitaceae and Begoniaceae, which are predominantly, and likely basically, herbaceous. A detailed treatment of the tropical and southern temperate woody family Myrtaceae (itself comprising 142 genera and 6,700 species) is an addendum to the treatment of the Myrtales in Vol. IX of this series.

Book excerpt: This is an enumeration of the seed plants (excluding monocots) found in tropical Singapore. It includes nearly 1,300 species of naked-seeded plants and dicots which are native or naturalised, and over 520 species which are commonly cultivated in Singapore and adjacent islands. They are systematically arranged in 142 families in this book. An alphabetical list of the families can be found in the beginning of the book. There are brief descriptions on the families and short diagnoses and notes to the species of the genera. Keys to the families and genera of most families are also provided. Nearly all the families are illustrated with at least one line drawing. Some of the larger families, such as composites and legumes, are accompanied with 10 to 20 drawings. They generally depict the common or renowned examples.

Book excerpt: This handbook, consisting of six volumes, covers over 9000 taxa of succulents (excluding cacti), which have the ability to store water in their stems, leaves, or underground organs. In addition to the volumes on Monocotyledons and Dicotyledons, separate volumes are devoted to those families with predominantly succulent members, which show an especially great diversity, namely Aizoaceae, Asclepiadaceae and Crassulaceae. Following an alphabetical listing of families, genera and species, detailed descriptions are given, including the taxonomy with synonyms, data on the distribution and ecology, references, and keys to genera, species or subspecies. Over 2000 superb colour photographs complete this inventory of succulent plants.
