Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Gordon, the "Independent Whig" Unfortunately, we know very little about Thomas Gordon's own history, for, though a prodigal dispenser of Opinions, he was very sparing of the facts about his origins and career, so that we might very well call him Silentio rather than Silenus (an epithet applied to him because he happened to be a Commissioner of Wine Licenses) as Pope did in the Dunciad Gordon's own reticence was further accentuated by the disapproval of his Opinions on the part of his literary countrymen For example, Chalmers, in his General Bio graphical Dictionary dismisses the Independent Whig as a gross and indecent libel on the established religion, describes his style as extremely vulgar, and tells us that his Tacitus is miserably mangled Thomas Murray in his Literary History of Galloway (1822) was even more shocked by Gordon's views, thinking it a fortunate circumstance that the Independent Whig was now known only by name. N 0 family of the house of Gordon was anxious to claim kin with him, because the Gordons as a race have never greatly interested themselves in ideas - they are essen tially men of action - and least of all in radical ideas; so that be yond a note in a letter written by Sir Alexander Gordon of Culvennan to the effect that Gordon's brother was a surgeon in Glasgow, we are quite in the dark. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character of an Independent Whig In Confequence of this, he has a great Refpee'c for the Office of a Clergyman and for his Perfon, if he deferves it. But if his Dod'rine or Practice difgraces his Order, our Whig owns his Contempt for the Men. The Clergy are the befi or the worfi of Men 5 and as the firfi cannot be too much ho moure'd, the latter cannot be too much defpifed. It is of good Example, and there is equal Reafon in it. Why lhould Virtue and -villany fare alike Names do nor change Qualities, nor Habits Men. Where is the Equity of Rewards and Punifhments, and confequently the Force of'all Laws, human and divine, if vile Men mul't be reverenced, and the good can be no more? It is but reafonable that all Men {hould be judged by their Actions, and reverenced, or fcorned, ac cording to the Goodnefs or Wickednefs of their Lives, without any Regard had to their Titles or Garbs; which fignify no more than a Breath of Wind, or the Bark of a Tree. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an envisaging study of the ideologies of Thomas Gordon and John Trenchard. The work demonstrates that both writers were intimately identified with the Independent Whigs and vociferously denounced the absolutistic thinking and counterrevolutionary threats and activities of High Church Tories and Jacobites. The first two chapters detail the political and religious posture of High Church clergymen during the 1688-89 Revolution. The next three chapters offer vivid profiles of Gordon and Trenchard as being radical, court, and Harringtonian Whigs and assesses their roles as propagandists in early Hanoverian England. There are stimulating accounts concerning the personalities and collaborative efforts of these two men, the origins and functions of The Independent Whig and Cato's Letters, the responses of these writers to the political and religious policies of Walpole, and the repudiation by these Radical Whigs of the tyrannical and seditious behavior of Stuart sympathizers. In the conclusion, the author offers a review of significant points made in the study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the preface to his edition of Shakespeare, Alexander Pope noted that his age was one of Parties, both in Wit and State. Much scholarship has been devoted to the complexities of the political parties of the eighteenth century, but there has been a surprising reluctance to explore what Pope implied were the corollaries of those parties, namely, parties in literature. The essays collected here explore the literary culture that arose from and supported what Pitt the Elder referred to as the great spirit of Whiggism that animated English politics during the eighteenth century. From the prehistory of Whiggism in the court of Charles II to the fractures opened up within it by the French Revolution in the 1790s, the interactions between Whiggish politics and literature are sampled and described in groundbreaking essays that range widely across the fields of eighteenth-century political prose, poetry, and the novel.
