The second letter, dated 1853, finds Carey slowly recovering from an accident that has left him with a broken knee and serious head injuries. While he still cannot read for more than 2 or 3 hours a day or take any exercise, Carey write, "I consider myself as one snatched from Death by the special Mercy of God." He hopes Torrey will be able to visit in the spring and wishes him luck in moving house.
