Book Synopsis Suicide as a Dramatic Performance by : David Lester
Download or read book Suicide as a Dramatic Performance written by David Lester and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each suicide is as unique as the individuals involved, especially if one examines the nature of the act and to what extent these acts can be viewed as a theatrical performance. Focusing on the dramatic aspects of suicide may seem tangential to the physical and mental pain experienced by those who try to kill themselves, but dramatic aspects often provide important clues for understanding the mental state of suicidal individuals.David Lester and Steven Stack investigate what happens in the weeks, days and hours before a suicide when the suicidal individual must make decisions and formulate the script for his or her suicidal act. The editors argue that these choices may help us understand and prevent other suicides and stimulate new and innovative research in this important area.Through twenty-five substantive chapters, including both quantitative and qualitative analyses, this book offers insights into suicide as a dramatic act, with chapters on the intended audience, the suicide note, the location and method chosen, and cultural scripts, including suicide-by-cop, sati, seppuku, and duels. The contributors to this volume argue that psychological, social, and cultural factors influence these choices and that the decisions made by the individual are important for understanding the mental state of the person choosing to die by suicide.

Book excerpt: “A mash-up of Erik Larson and Richard Preston.” —Tina Jordan, New York Times Book Review podcast On March 6, 1900, the bubonic plague took its first victim on American soil: Chinese immigrant Wong Chut King. Empowered by racist pseudoscience, officials rushed to quarantine Chinatown—but when corrupt politicians mounted a cover-up to obscure the threat, it fell to federal health officer Rupert Blue to save San Francisco, and the nation, from a gruesome fate. Black Death at the Golden Gate is a spine-chilling saga of virulent racism, human folly, and the ultimate triumph of scientific progress.
Download or read book The Golden Door written by Dresden Reese and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author graduated with Honors from Loyola University of Chicago. She now resides in northern California, enjoys two lovely daughters and a multifaceted career as an artist/designer, educator and mentor. I write to entertain and educate (mainly myself after a tragic accident). Words entertain me and conjure up pictures without ever uttering sound. The accident gave me time to write on an old computer donated by the editor of a local newspaper, and that is another story . . . . . . . . . In 2006, the world silently celebrated the 50th anniversary of a rebellion gone awry. It wasnt just kids games fought with sticks and stones against Soviet tanks, it was bigger than that, it was Hungarys passion for life, joy and vivre that erupted on that day, the 23rd of October, 1956. The media barely gave the event fi ve minutes notice. James Michener captured the saga in his book, Bridge at Andau. Without Micheners documentation and independent research, I would probably have dismissed this story as fi ction. At the end, the matron who shared her plight and joy with me brought out a leather bound photo album fi lled with post cards Olgi mailed from the free world to her mother behind the Iron Curtain. Those dates, the pictures and words authenticate whats written. The story documents the Cold War era, as well as contrasts Soviet Communism with Americas democratic ideals. As one of my critics, one of my students, puts it, the story teaches us to be thankful. The Golden Door is truly a love story, the love of a man and a woman and their passion for freedom. Thank you in advance for choosing this book . . . . . . . . . ..
