Book excerpt: From grade school to graduate school, from the poorest public institutions to the most affluent private ones, our educational system is failing students. In his provocative new book, cognitive scientist and bestselling author Roger Schank argues that class size, lack of parental involvement, and other commonly-cited factors have nothing to do with why students are not learning. The culprit is a system of subject-based instruction and the solution is cognitive-based learning. This groundbreaking book defines what it would mean to teach thinking. The time is now for schools to start teaching minds!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dolphin Girl and the Darker Side of Things By: Edward G. Kidder Jessica Kingsbury, a stunningly beautiful young woman, is trying to distance herself from the terribly tragic events life dealt her at a much younger age; events resulting in a criminal conviction, incarceration, mental institutionalization, violent physical abuse, and long-term state-mandated supervisions. Jessica interacts with a host of elements and people in a small rural town, all of whom are pulling at her in a different direction, each for different reasons. A mature dedicated clinical psychologist, with matrimonial problems of her own, Dr. Jackie Fenton, Jessica’s lead clinical doctor, is trying to balance professional ethnics with very unorthodox curative procedures. She struggles with bizarre human elements in this true-to-life, hard-hitting, fast-moving saga of human drama. She must use outlandish elements and the dynamic energy of a tough, erotically inclined city police sergeant, his controlling assistant district attorney girlfriend, Jessica’s obstinate and determined father, and takes career-ending chances for the ultimate betterment of her client, Jessica, all the while dealing with her own latent sexual attraction to a random step-in hero who takes it on himself to help Jessica in any way he can; placing himself in the middle of the extravaganza. This story starts with the seemingly random collision of people and elements meshed together like gears in a recklessly fast-spinning machine; quickly loses control and rushes toward to an ever-uncertain conclusion affecting everyone that is touched by or gets involved with the darker side of “The Dolphin Girl.”

Download or read book Offending Girls written by Gilly Sharpe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the twenty-first century, panic about girls’ offending in Britain reached fever pitch. No longer sugar and spice, a ‘new breed’ of girl, the hedonistic, violent, binge-drinking ‘ladette’, was reported to have emerged. At the same time, the number of young women entering the youth justice system, including youth custody, increased dramatically. Offending Girls challenges simplistic and demonising popular representations of 'bad' girls and examines what exactly is new about the ‘new’ offending girl. In the light of enormous social and cultural changes affecting girls’ lives, and expectations of them, since previous British research in this area, the book investigates whether popular stereotypes problematising female youthful behaviour resonate with the accounts of criminalised young women themselves, and to what extent they have infiltrated professional youth justice discourse. Through the lens of original detailed qualitative research in two Youth Offending Teams and a Secure Training Centre – the first study of its kind since the 'modernisation' of the youth justice system over a decade ago – Offending Girls questions whether the ‘new’ youth justice system is delivering justice for girls and young women. It also contends that the panic about an ‘unprecedented crime wave’ amongst girls is not supported by robust evidence, but that the interventionist thrust which characterises contemporary youth justice has had a particularly pernicious impact on girls. It will be key reading for students and academics working in the areas of criminology, criminal and youth justice, education, gender studies, youth studies, social work, sociology and social policy, as well as youth and criminal justice practitioners and policy-makers.
