Book excerpt: Geothermal energy refers to the heat contained within the Earth that generates geological phenomena on a planetary scale. Today, this term is often associated with man's efforts to tap into this vast energy source. Geothermal Energy: utilization and technology is a detailed reference text, describing the various methods and technologies used to exploit the earth's heat. Beginning with an overview of geothermal energy and the state of the art, leading international experts in the field cover the main applications of geothermal energy, including: electricity generation space and district heating space cooling greenhouse heating aquaculture industrial applications The final third of the book focuses upon environmental impact and economic, financial and legal considerations, providing a comprehensive review of these topics. Each chapter is written by a different author, but to a set style, beginning with aims and objectives and ending with references, self-assessment questions and answers. Case studies are included throughout. Whilst written primarily for professionals and students interested in learning more about geothermal energy, the book also offers those new to the field and the general geothermal community an opportunity to understand and review the potential of this exciting alternative energy source. Download or read book Adhesion Science written by Steven Abbott and published by DEStech Publications, Inc. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explains the physics and chemistry of adhesion, surface preparation and testsPresents new strategies for formulating superior strong, weak and pressure-sensitive adhesivesIncludes access to unique electronic apps that enable numerical modeling of adhesives This technical bound book explains the basic principles of adhesion and shows how they are used to formulate and improve adhesives. The volume starts by laying out key physical and chemical concepts underlying adhesion and adhesives, including strong and weak bonds plus pressure-sensitive (PSA) across multiple polymer, metal and ceramic adherends. The ideas are expressed in clear and easily understood mathematical formulas that explain surface properties as well as "good" and "bad" adhesion, with the latter covering multiple types of adhesive failure. In this context, the book presents a detailed explanation of methods to predict, test and formulate adhesives and critically analyzes test results and traditionally accepted rules for adhesive formulation. The eBook version includes online access to a unique set of applied computer programs or "apps" that automate a wide range of adhesive formulas and enable readers to input their own data and numerically model adhesion properties in conjunction with, or prior to, chemical compounding and empirical testing. This volume constitutes a lucid and practical introduction to adhesion and adhesives appropriate for specialists at all levels.
Book Synopsis The Biological Universe by : Steven J. Dick
Download or read book The Biological Universe written by Steven J. Dick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-06-13 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the twentieth century, from the furor over Percival Lowell's claim of canals on Mars to the sophisticated Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, otherworldly life has often intrigued and occasionally consumed science and the public. The Biological Universe provides a rich and colorful history of the attempts during the twentieth century to answer questions such as whether "biological law" reigns throughout the universe and whether there are other histories, religions, and philosophies outside those on Earth. Covering a broad range of topics, including the search for life in the solar system, the origins of life, UFOs, and aliens in science fiction, Steven J. Dick shows how the concept of extraterrestrial intelligence is a world view of its own, a "biophysical cosmology" that seeks confirmation no less than physical views of the universe. This book will fascinate astronomers, historians of science, biochemists, and science fiction readers.
Book Synopsis Algebraic Curves and Their Applications by : Lubjana Beshaj

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a collection of papers on algebraic curves and their applications. While algebraic curves traditionally have provided a path toward modern algebraic geometry, they also provide many applications in number theory, computer security and cryptography, coding theory, differential equations, and more. Papers cover topics such as the rational torsion points of elliptic curves, arithmetic statistics in the moduli space of curves, combinatorial descriptions of semistable hyperelliptic curves over local fields, heights on weighted projective spaces, automorphism groups of curves, hyperelliptic curves, dessins d'enfants, applications to Painlevé equations, descent on real algebraic varieties, quadratic residue codes based on hyperelliptic curves, and Abelian varieties and cryptography. This book will be a valuable resource for people interested in algebraic curves and their connections to other branches of mathematics.

Download or read book Sparks of Life written by James E. Strick and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How, asks James E. Strick, could spontaneous generation--the idea that living things can suddenly arise from nonliving materials--come to take root for a time (even a brief one) in so thoroughly unsuitable a field as British natural theology? No less an authority than Aristotle claimed that cases of spontaneous generation were to be observed in nature, and the idea held sway for centuries. Beginning around the time of the Scientific Revolution, however, the doctrine was increasingly challenged; attempts to prove or disprove it led to important breakthroughs in experimental design and laboratory techniques, most notably sterilization methods, that became the cornerstones of modern microbiology and sped the ascendancy of the germ theory of disease. The Victorian debates, Strick shows, were entwined with the public controversy over Darwin's theory of evolution. While other histories of the debates between 1860 and 1880 have focused largely on the experiments of John Tyndall, Henry Charlton Bastian, and others, Sparks of Life emphasizes previously understudied changes in the theories that underlay the debates. Strick argues that the disputes cannot be understood without full knowledge of the factional infighting among Darwinians themselves, as they struggled to create a socially and scientifically viable form of Darwinian science. He shows that even the terms of the debate, such as biogenesis, usually but incorrectly attributed to Huxley, were intensely contested.
