Book excerpt: This must-have book for newcomers to the popular art of bookmaking teaches all the basics and features easy and interesting projects that allow self-expression and experimentation. More experienced bookmakers and paper enthusiasts will also note that it offers a wealth of practical tips and techniques in one handy resource. All the basic bookmaking techniques include lots of specialized tips. Simple book structures, miniature books, and a wide variety of projects that highlight themes such as travel, music, even wearable books -- a book necklace and earrings -- provide creative variations on traditional ideas. The authors share innovative, unique, and previously unpublished binding structures that incorporate scrolls, flaps, folders, and more. In addition, some book projects are made from unusual materials or found objects, such as a book out of a ukulele, a real accordion book, a book diorama in a cigar box, and other experimental creations.

Book excerpt: This catalogue gives detailed description of 220 miniature books divided into eight sections located in the library of Dunderave Castle in Scotland. The three major sections include Rare Books, Almanacs and Thumb Bibles followed by five minor sections which include Prayer Books, the Koran with other works from 18th, 19th Centuries, post 1900 and Objets d’Art. The collection at Dunderave Castle consists of two collections purchased at auction. The initial was from the Dutch book dealer Nico Israel and his wife Nanni collected over their lifetime from important collections such as the Houghton sale in 1979 and include the earliest published miniature the Kalendarium of 1570 by Plantin. The other titles purchased from Mr. and Mrs. John Gutfreund from New York included several books from the Salomon collection. Following the introduction, a detailed description is given of the books with photographic images taken by Iain McLean and John Linton. Miniature books are defined as 3 inches (77cm) or less in height but for books printed in 19th Century or earlier it can be extended to 4 inches. The Israel collection was housed in a Miniature revolving bookcase, a bureau cabinet and a pedestal bookcase.

Book excerpt: Showcasing a unique and extensive private collection that is soon to be acquired by the Yale Center for British Art, The Poet of Them All illustrates almost one hundred of Neale and Margaret Albert's miniature books, each one intricately constructed and rendered in precise detail at less than three inches in height. Imaginatively hand-bound by some of today's most accomplished bookbinders, the selection features custom miniature editions of publications by William Shakespeare and related to his works, preceded by an in-depth essay from leading book historian, conservator, and artist James Reid-Cunningham. Revealing an underexplored facet of contemporary book arts, this publication illustrates the remarkable singularity of the Alberts' collection, providing both comprehensive views and the scholarly context necessary to fully appreciate the significance of these distinctive objects. Distributed for the Yale Center for British Art Exhibition Schedule: The Grolier Club, New York (03/24/16-05/28/16) Yale Center for British Art, New Haven (06/16/16-08/21/16)

Book excerpt: “There are more than 50 creative prompts for the artist (or artist at heart) to explore. Take the title of this book as affirmation, and get started.” —Fast Company More than 50 assignments, ideas, and prompts to expand your world and help you make outstanding new things to put into it Curator Sarah Urist Green left her office in the basement of an art museum to travel and visit a diverse range of artists, asking them to share prompts that relate to their own ways of working. The result is You Are an Artist, a journey of creation through which you'll invent imaginary friends, sort books, declare a cause, construct a landscape, find your band, and become someone else (or at least try). Your challenge is to filter these assignments through the lens of your own experience and make art that reflects the world as you see it. You don't have to know how to draw well, stretch a canvas, or mix a paint color that perfectly matches that of a mountain stream. This book is for anyone who wants to make art, regardless of experience level. The only materials you'll need are what you already have on hand or can source for free. Full of insights, techniques, and inspiration from art history, this book opens up the processes and practices of artists and proves that you, too, have what it takes to call yourself one. You Are an Artist brings together more than 50 assignments gathered from some of the most innovative creators working today, including Sonya Clark, Michelle Grabner, The Guerrilla Girls, Fritz Haeg, Pablo Helguera, Nina Katchadourian, Toyin Ojih Odutola, J. Morgan Puett, Dread Scott, Alec Soth, Gillian Wearing, and many others.
