Book excerpt: Sepsis and infection are the major enemies of the intensive care patient in whom immunological defenses are severely impaired. This major problem is thefocus of attention in this book, based on the presentation of the First International Congress on the Immune Consequences of Trauma, Shock, and Sepsis, which is one of the first attempts to exchange ideas on the state-of-the-art in this area of immunology. Both basic and clinical research, including new centres of attention, are described. The growing role of immunology in medicine opens new avenues to the under- standing of trauma and sepsis and will allow the design of novel therapeutic approaches.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unique overview of all aspects of host defense alterations under stressful conditions. It is based on the most important contributions given at the "2nd International Congress on the Immune Consequences of Trauma, Shock, and Sepsis-Mechanisms and Therapeutic Approaches," which was held in Munich under the auspices of the most distinguished scientific societies involved in this field (Society of Critical Care Medicine, European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, Societe Internationale de Chirurgie, Surgical Infection Society, Surgical Infection Society Europe, European Society for Surgical Research, International Society for Burn Injury, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and National Institutes of Health). Since the first conference of this kind in 1988, new information from basic studies and clinical trials has provided exciting and novel insights into the immune dysfunctions accom panying trauma, shock, and sepsis. The volume is divided into 18 parts presenting the structural background of trauma-induced alterations of immune and imflammatory mechanisms as well as the currently discussed therapeutic interventions designed to restore or maintain normal host defenses following major injury. Introducing the general theme of the book is a summary of the essential keystones of trauma and sepsis-related immune deficits. Discussions of the progress in trauma care brought through better understanding of the cell biology of injury and of the major clinical factors that influence host defense integrity in operative medicine provide a setting for understanding the wide array of detailed information that is presented thereafter.

Download or read book Host Defense Dysfunction in Trauma, Shock, and Sepsis written by Eugen Faist and published by Berlin : Springer-Verlag. This book was released on 1993 with total page 1296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a unique overview of the sequence of steps of host defense impairment that result from injury and lead to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The crucial alterations of immune and inflammatory mechanisms as they are seen during ischemia, during inter- mediate inflammatory phases, and in states of bacterial sepsis are described in detail. The role of endotoxin, its mechanisms of action, and potential counterregulatory strategies to neutralize endotoxin in order to protect from shock are discussed, as there are major etiologic factors leading to organ failure such as hepatic cellular injury and bacterial translocation. Cytokines, as the central mediators in acute phase states and the modulation of cytokine action are then evaluated carefully. In the discussion of the clinical aspects of multiple organ failure, the antibiotic interactions with host defenses, the augmentation of immunoreactivity with special nutrients and the newest insights into the regulation of wound repair are elucidated. The final sections of this book deal with therapeutic immunomodulatory approaches for the prevention ofinfections and with interventional strategies in the therapy of septic shock.

Book Synopsis Sepsis Management in Resource-limited Settings by : Arjen M. Dondorp
Download or read book Sepsis Management in Resource-limited Settings written by Arjen M. Dondorp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. It constitutes a unique source of knowledge and guidance for all healthcare workers who care for patients with sepsis and septic shock in resource-limited settings. More than eighty percent of the worldwide deaths related to sepsis occur in resource-limited settings in low and middle-income countries. Current international sepsis guidelines cannot be implemented without adaptations towards these settings, mainly because of the difference in local resources and a different spectrum of infectious diseases causing sepsis. This prompted members of the Global Intensive Care working group of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and the Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU, Bangkok, Thailand) - among which the Editors – to develop with an international group of experts a comprehensive set of recommendations for the management of sepsis in resource-limited settings. Recommendations are based on both current scientific evidence and clinical experience of clinicians working in resource-limited settings. The book includes an overview chapter outlining the current challenges and future directions of sepsis management as well as general recommendations on the structure and organization of intensive care services in resource-limited settings. Specific recommendations on the recognition and management of patients with sepsis and septic shock in these settings are grouped into seven chapters. The book provides evidence-based practical guidance for doctors in low and middle income countries treating patients with sepsis, and highlights areas for further research and discussion.
Book Synopsis Hemodynamic Monitoring by : Michael R. Pinsky
Download or read book Hemodynamic Monitoring written by Michael R. Pinsky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, part of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine textbook series, teaches readers how to use hemodynamic monitoring, an essential skill for today’s intensivists. It offers a valuable guide for beginners, as well as for experienced intensivists who want to hone their skills, helping both groups detect an inadequacy of perfusion and make the right choices to achieve the main goal of hemodynamic monitoring in the critically ill, i.e., to correctly assess the cardiovascular system and its response to tissue oxygen demands. The book is divided into distinguished sections: from physiology to pathophysiology; clinical assessment and measurements; and clinical practice achievements including techniques, the basic goals in clinical practice as well as the more appropriate hemodynamic therapy to be applied in different conditions. All chapters use a learning-oriented style, with practical examples, key points and take home messages, helping readers quickly absorb the content and, at the same time, apply what they have learned in the clinical setting. The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine has developed the Lessons from the ICU series with the vision of providing focused and state-of-the-art overviews of central topics in Intensive Care and optimal resources for clinicians working in Intensive Care.
