Book Synopsis Everyday Things in Premodern Japan by : Susan B. Hanley
Download or read book Everyday Things in Premodern Japan written by Susan B. Hanley and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan was the only non-Western nation to industrialize before 1900 and its leap into the modern era has stimulated vigorous debates among historians and social scientists. In an innovative discussion that posits the importance of physical well-being as a key indicator of living standards, Susan B. Hanley considers daily life in the three centuries leading up to the modern era in Japan. She concludes that people lived much better than has been previously understood—at levels equal or superior to their Western contemporaries. She goes on to illustrate how this high level of physical well-being had important consequences for Japan's ability to industrialize rapidly and for the comparatively smooth transition to a modern, industrial society. While others have used income levels to conclude that the Japanese household was relatively poor in those centuries, Hanley examines the material culture—food, sanitation, housing, and transportation. How did ordinary people conserve the limited resources available in this small island country? What foods made up the daily diet and how were they prepared? How were human wastes disposed of? How long did people live? Hanley answers all these questions and more in an accessible style and with frequent comparisons with Western lifestyles. Her methods allow for cross-cultural comparisons between Japan and the West as well as Japan and the rest of Asia. They will be useful to anyone interested in the effects of modernization on daily life.
Download or read book Kwaidan written by Lafcadio Hearn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things It may be doubted whether any oriental race has ever had an interpreter gifted with more perfect insight and sympathy than Lafcadio Hearn has brought to the translation of Japan into terms of our occidental Speech. His long residence in that country, his flexibility of mind, poetic imagination, and wonderfully pellucid style have fitted him for the most delicate of literary tasks. He has seen marvels, and he has told of them in a marvellous way. There is scarcely an aspect of contemporary Japanese life, scarcely an ele ment in the social, political, and military questions involved in the present conflict with Russia which is not made clear in one or another of the books with which he has charmed American readers. Book Synopsis Things Japanese by : Basil Hall Chamberlain
Download or read book Things Japanese written by Basil Hall Chamberlain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Things Japanese: Being Notes on Various Subjects Connected With Japan, for the Use of Travellers and Others In the unlikely event of any one instituting a minute comparison between this edition and its predecessor, he would find minor alterations innumerable, - here a line erased, there a paragraph added, or again a figure changed, a statement qualified, a description or a list brought up to date, even a score of completely new articles inserted. But take it altogether, the book remains the same as heretofore. It would seem to have found favour in many quarters, to judge from the man ner in which, years after its first appearance, newspapers and book-makers continue to quote wholesale from it without acknowledgment and the title, which it cost us much cogitation to devise, and which we borrowed ultimately from the Spanish phrase cosus de Espaua, has passed into general use, even coming to supply titles for similar works written about other lands in imitation of this one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jinrikisha Days in Japan This book has only attempted to present some of the phases of the new Japan as they appeared to one who was both a tourist and a foreign resi dent in that country. No one person can see it all, nor comprehend it, as the Jinrikisha speeds through city streets and over country roads, nor do any two people enjoy just the same experiences, see things in the same light, or draw the same conclusions as to this remarkable people. Japan is so inexhaust ible and so full of surprises that to the last day of his stay the tourist and the resident alike are con fronted by some novelty that is yet wholly common and usual in the life of the Japanese. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan in Days of Yore In order to do something, however humble, towards disclosing the treasures that lie concealed in hundreds of books which few foreigners are able to read, and fewer still have the leisure to study and to reproduce in another tongue, I have undertaken to write a series of tales bearing on the Japan of the past. The series is to consist of translations, in some cases, paraphrases or adaptations, in others, of well known Japanese stories and biographies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan as We Saw It Japan as we saw it is, I venture to think, a happy title for these brief sketches by my daughter, of our eight weeks' sojourn in the Mikado's Empire. They do not claim in any way to be a tourist's handbook. They are only word-photographs, somewhat loosely grouped together, of what we were permitted to see under the exceptionally favourable guidance of my son, the Church of England Bishop there, and of the impressions indelibly stamped on our'memory while passing through that fascinating land, and freely mingling with cultured Japanese society. And they must only be accepted as samples of countless things we did not see. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan Today All the more intense for this age-long re pression was the activity that immediately ensued when the crust was broken, finally, in 1854. The Japanese is a born Yankee; monastic life does not become him. He had needed, however, precisely that strong self control that came from the schooling of Buddhism. He now realized with the flash of instinct that he had finally come into his own. The ozone of the West filled his lungs. He breathed full and deep, then leaped with great bounds straight into the thick of things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glimpse at the Art of Japan The orthography of Japanese proper names varies considerably among writers, but the author has fol lowed those who seem to be the best authority; and the objects described or engraved are chiefly taken from his own little collection. It has been the nu expected interest shown in the few slight sketches of Japanese art, which he published in English and American journals several years ago, that has led to this fuller treatment of the topic.
