Book excerpt: The author argues that the process of incrementally constructing perceptual representations, solving the binding problem (determining which properties go together), and, more generally, grounding perceptual representations in experience arise from the nonconceptual capacity to pick out and keep track of a small number of sensory individuals. He proposes a mechanism in early vision that allows us to select a limited number of sensory objects, to reidentify each of them under certain conditions as the same individual seen before, and to keep track of their enduring individuality despite radical changes in their properties--all without the machinery of concepts, identity, and tenses. This mechanism, which he calls FINSTs (for "Fingers of Instantiation"), is responsible for our capacity to individuate and track several independently moving sensory objects--an ability that we exercise every waking minute, and one that can be understood as fundamental to the way we see and understand the world and to our sense of space.

Book excerpt: A moving, inspiring, personal look at the vastly changing world of wildlife on planet earth as a result of human incursion, and the crucial work of animal and bird preservation across the globe being done by scientists, field biologists, zoologists, environmentalists, and conservationists. From a longtime, much-admired activist, impassioned wildlife proponent and conservationist, former chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts, four time Academy Award nominee, and Tony Award and two-time Emmy Award-winning actress. In Wild Things, Wild Places, Jane Alexander movingly, with a clear eye and a knowing, keen grasp of the issues and on what is being done in conservation and the worlds of science to help the planet's most endangered species to stay alive and thrive, writes of her steady and fervent immersion into the worlds of wildlife conservation, of her coming to know the scientists throughout the world--to her, the prophets in the wilderness--who are steeped in this work, of her travels with them--and on her own--to the most remote and forbidding areas of the world as they try to save many species, including ourselves.

Book excerpt: During his 10-year career as the frontman of acclaimed metal/hardcore band, For Today, Mattie Montgomery spent countless nights in bars and night clubs all around the world, sharing the love of Christ with a largely secular subculture-one that has been all but forgotten by much of the modern church. In Lovely Things in Ugly Places, he invites us to come with him as he revisits the moments in his ministry (some incredible, some hilarious, and some tragic), that shaped him most substantially.Known for his bold and fearless proclamation of the Gospel, Montgomery writes with vulnerability and transparency, beckoning the Body of Christ into a radical lifestyle of love. He challenges his readers to lay down the labels we use to identify people, and to see them (and ourselves) as God does, reminding us that, if we are willing to look, we too will find Lovely Things in Ugly Places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitchcock’s People, Places, and Things argues that Alfred Hitchcock was as much a filmmaker of things and places as he was of people. Drawing on the thought of Bruno Latour, John Bruns traces the complex relations of human and nonhuman agents in Hitchcock’s films with the aim of mapping the Hitchcock landscape cognitively, affectively, and politically. Yet this book does not promise that such a map can or will cohere, for Hitchcock was just as adept at misdirection as he was at direction. Bearing this in mind and true to the Hitchcock spirit, Hitchcock’s People, Places, and Things anticipates that people will stumble into the wrong places at the wrong time, places will be made uncanny by things, and things exchanged between people will act as (not-so) secret agents that make up the perilous landscape of Hitchcock’s work. This book offers new readings of well-known Hitchcock films, including The Lodger, Shadow of a Doubt, Psycho, The Birds, and Marnie, as well as insights into lesser-discussed films such as I Confess and Family Plot. Additional close readings of the original theatrical trailer for Psycho and a Hitchcock-directed episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents expand the Hitchcock landscape beyond conventional critical borders. In tracing the network of relations in Hitchcock’s work, Bruns brings new Hitchcockian tropes to light. For students, scholars, and serious fans, the author promises a thrilling critical navigation of the Hitchcock landscape, with frequent “mental shake-ups” that Hitchcock promised his audience.

Book excerpt: “In my eyes, Drug Treatment Court gives people like me a second chance to change their lives and to realize that we deserve a good life, no matter what we have done in the past. All I can really say is that if I didn’t have the privilege to be in drug treatment court, I would either still be incarcerated or would not be alive today.” People, Places and Things is a collection of stories from men and women who have lived lives of drugs and crime. Each has made the courageous decision to overcome their addiction, and the even more courageous decision to share their journeys with you. As they strive for sobriety with the guidance of Canada’s drug treatment courts, they experience the extremes of addiction, the power of recovery, and the value of community. The stories within are raw—the authors have bared their souls, which is a difficult and brave endeavour. Some of the stories in this book are tales of happy endings, while some represent very dark moments. Addiction, as any of life’s hardships, is a continuous journey; void of an end-state. These pages contain lessons about the power of resilience, the magic of hope, and the strength of believing in one’s ability to become the person one wants to be. The extremes you might experience as you embrace this collection of stories, poems, and artwork is representative of the extremes that those recovering from addiction endure, and of the extremes experienced by those that support, counsel, and represent them throughout their recovery.

Book excerpt: This volume collects for the first time essays published in British, Irish, and American periodicals during Bowen's lifetime as well as essays which have never been published before. The range of subjects alone makes these essays indispensable reading.Throughout her career, Elizabeth Bowen, the Anglo-Irish novelist and short story writer, also wrote literary essays that display a shrewd, generous intelligence. Always sensitive to underlying tensions, she evokes the particular climate of countries and places in Hungary,"e; "e;Prague and the Crisis,"e; and "e;Bowen's Court."e; In "e;Britain in Autumn,"e; she records the strained atmosphere of the blitz as no other writer does. Immediately after the war, she reported on the International Peace Conference in Paris in a series of essays that are startling in their evocation of tense diplomacy among international delegates scrabbling to define the boundaries of Europe and the stakes of the Cold War. The aftershock of war registers poignantly in "e;Opening Up the House"e;: owners evacuated during the war return to their houses empty since 1939. Other essays in this volume, especially those on James Joyce, Jane Austen, and the technique of writing, offer indispensable mid-century evaluations of the state of literature. The essays assembled in this volume were published in British, Irish, and American periodicals during Bowen's lifetime. She herself did not gather them into any collection. Some of these essays exist only as typescript drafts and are published here for the first time. Bowen's observations on age, toys, disappointment, charm, and manners place her among the very best literary essayists of the modernist period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holy Things, Holy Actions, Holy Places is a Catholic-oriented book whose main object is to introduce to and teach readers about the names and uses of various objects, vessels, substances, and garments used in our beautiful Catholic Liturgy and other services. The format is very simple, and the language is easy for anyone, young or old, to read and understand. Many Catholics attend church services and observe the use of these objects, substances, and garments but do not know their names or the purpose of their use. The book has therefore been written to encourage and to teach Catholic Christians and any interested others 1. to get to know the names of these items used in the Catholic Liturgy and ceremonies, 2. to understand the religious significance of each item and the reason for its use, either in the liturgy or privately, 3. to assist in the faith formation of young and even older persons, and 4. to encourage Catholics, young and old and those in between, to pay more attention to and to appreciate our rich and beautiful Catholic religion, ceremonies, and treasures.
