Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thiers If the art of writing consisted merely in clothing an ingenious thought in correct and elegant phrases, or in running down a new image, a happily chosen metaphor, there would be few great writers, and it would be something of a paradox to place M. Thiers in their select company. Critics would point out that the literary style of this statesman is not always perfectly correct, - that it sometimes lacks elegance or rapidity or picturesqueness. Facts and things, rather than words, stir his imagination, which is not reflected in his style. Strewn negligently here and there are lumbering sentences, colourless expressions, commonplaces of diction and thought. Luckily, however, the qualities of the great writer are of an order very much above anything that can be taught in books of rhetoric. Thiers, 1870-1873 European Courts that for France and for Europe the best thing to do was to help the present Govern ment of France. Lord Granville fully accepted all I said on this matter, and if he had paused upon it it was as an objection, not on the part of England, but of Prussia seeking pretexts not to treat. He even asked me why the next Constituent Assembly had not been summoned as quickly as possible. I replied that the nature of the circumstances of the moment made it impossible, and in any case he seemed in this to wish to prove that he spoke not for himself but for Prussia, whose ill-will we have to neutralize. At length we came to present circumstances, and I asked what England was willing to do; I asked it in the most urgent manner, reminding him of our forty years' alliance, our brotherhood in arms in the Crimea, and the loyalty of our behaviour during the war in India. I asked if England would refuse all support at a moment when the madness of the fallen Government had left us disarmed before a Power that in no way disguised its passion for aggrandize ment. Guizot, and Other Distinguished Persons, During the Second Empire, Vol. 1 of 2 Mr. Senior's conversations in Paris, from 1848 to 1852, appeared in print soon after the close of the disastrous war during which the Second Empire crumbled away. The lapse of time has at length made it possible to bring out another series. The last journal that my father ever wrote was in 1863, and at first I thought of publishing extracts from the whole succession; but the wealth of materials was so great that it would have been impossible to keep the work within reasonable limits. The present publication, therefore, ends with our visit to Val Richer in 1860. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Speeches of Adolphe Thiers (With Introduction) The storm came in 1848. Louis Philippe's throne made little more resistance than a sand castle to the rising tide. A Republic was declared. Socialist experiments were made. All Europe was convulsed by the catastrophe. Yet when examined closely the Revolution of 1848 does not seem to be one of those movements which it is easy to call inevitable. There is little evidence that the country as a whole was hostile to the King. Thiers was called upon in the crisis for help and advice. He recommended the King to leave Paris at onoe and to retire to his palace at Saint Cloud. If the rising in Paris mastered the city for a time he believed it could be beaten down later. The policy that he advocated then he pursued in 1871, when he had to defend the Assembly against the Commune. His advice was not taken. The King abdicated, and the monarchy came to an unlamented end. There was nothing in this revolution that pleased Thiers. Of all things that which I can least support is the dictation of a mob, he wrote. And he had neither sympathy nor hope for Louis Blanc's socialistic experiments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign of Marengo: Extracted From Thiers' History of the Consulate and the Empire In the extracts of which this series is composed, the history of M. Thiers will be found unchanged. Portions will here and there be omitted which are mere episodes in the story, or which refer to some previous portion of it; but I have not thought myself at liberty to omit any words, or alter any phrases, in the passages actually selected. The division of chapters is alone different from that of the original work. The notes, ranging as they do over a very wide field of illustration, will no doubt be found to contain many inaccuracies, which I shall be glad at any time to see pointed out. On matters of military science, my own knowledge is slight, and mostly at second-hand but the elements of the science are becoming every dayr more accessible to non-professional readers. As regards the geography, impressions formed from maps have been, in most cases, strengthened or modified by personal visits to the scenes of the events described. Thiers, Vol. 1 of 2: From 8th February, 1871, to 24th May, 1873 This narrative opens on the 28th of January, 1871, a date of solemn import, that of the capitulation of Paris. On the 27th at midnight the firing had ceased, in virtue of a verbal agreement, which was to be ratified on both sides on the following day. Early on the morning of the 28th, M. Jules Favre went to Versailles, but Count Moltke, who was not satisfied with the stipulations that had been agreed upon, showed but little readiness to bring matters to a conclusion; at every moment some fresh difficulty was raised by the Staff, and the armistice was not signed until ten o'clock at night. It was one o'clock a.m. of the 29th when M. Jules Favre rejoined his colleagues. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 4 It is to be regretted that an author so well versed in the annals of his country as M. Thiers, has not thought it worth his while to enter more into detail on the subject of the numerous secondary causes which helped to bring about the French Revolution. It will be observed that, after a few brief introductory paragraphs, of a didactic rather than an historical character, he comes at once to his subject, as if he took for granted that all his readers were as well acquainted as himself with the remote, as well as with the immediate, origin of that memorable event His history may be said to commence with the derangement of the national finances after the death of Maurepas; but the seeds of the revolution were sown long before his time. The immediately pro pelling cause was no doubt financial, but the struggle had become ne cessary - it may almost be said from the day of the decease (if the Grand Monarque. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thiers' la Campagne de Waterloo: Abridged And Edited, With An Introduction And Notes In order the more effective to oppose the reactionary policy of Charles X, Thiers, in company with his old friend the historian Mignet, founded Le National, which did much towards bringing about the downfall of that monarch in july, 1830. Charles X was succeeded by louis-philippe, who called Thiers into his cabi net where he occupied various posts in succession, becoming min ister of Foreign Affairs in 1840. He came very near involving his country in a foreign war, and because the king did not approve of his schemes, he resigned his office. In 1848 he advocated the election of Louis Napoleon to the Presidency, but, true to his liberal principles, when Napoleon sought to found a monarchy, Thiers opposed him and was banished from the country, but was permitted to return the following year. During the next ten years he avoided politics, and devoted himself to writing his Histoire du Consulat et de l'empire, which was completed in 1862, in twenty volumes, and is really a continuation of his former work. In 1863 he became a member of the Corps législatif for Paris and belonged to the party of the opposition. He voted against the war with Prussia, and after the downfall of Napoleon III he was sent on a diplomatic mission to the principal courts of Europe, in order to induce them to interfere in favor of France, but he did not accomplish anything of importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church.
