A Republic was declared. Socialist experiments were made. All Europe was convulsed by the catastrophe. There is little evidence that the country as a whole was hostile to the King. Thiers was called upon in the crisis for help and advice. There was nothing in this revolution that pleased Thiers. Of all things that which I can least support is the dictation of a mob, he wrote. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thiers' la Campagne de Waterloo: Abridged And Edited, With An Introduction And Notes In order the more effective to oppose the reactionary policy of Charles X, Thiers, in company with his old friend the historian Mignet, founded Le National, which did much towards bringing about the downfall of that monarch in july, 1830. Charles X was succeeded by louis-philippe, who called Thiers into his cabi net where he occupied various posts in succession, becoming min ister of Foreign Affairs in 1840. He came very near involving his country in a foreign war, and because the king did not approve of his schemes, he resigned his office. In 1848 he advocated the election of Louis Napoleon to the Presidency, but, true to his liberal principles, when Napoleon sought to found a monarchy, Thiers opposed him and was banished from the country, but was permitted to return the following year. During the next ten years he avoided politics, and devoted himself to writing his Histoire du Consulat et de l'empire, which was completed in 1862, in twenty volumes, and is really a continuation of his former work. In 1863 he became a member of the Corps législatif for Paris and belonged to the party of the opposition. He voted against the war with Prussia, and after the downfall of Napoleon III he was sent on a diplomatic mission to the principal courts of Europe, in order to induce them to interfere in favor of France, but he did not accomplish anything of importance.
