Since Danny wants to be a Christian philosopher, he accepts the challenge of going to a completely and unabashedly humanistic university in order to learn philosophy. Shortly after matriculating to the school he is annoyed by a classmate's ridiculing of his faith, so Danny challenges this student, Peter Grayson, just to listen to a complete Christian apologetic without ridicule or interruption before he makes such scathing judgments. Peter takes him up on his challenge and invites Danny to a philosophy club meeting to present his case and undergo due scrutiny. Danny accepts and six sessions are set up to discuss the Bible, origins, morality, and evidences of faith. The book is honest about criticisms of the Bible and faith and answers to them. In the meantime Danny tries to find a good church home near campus that is somewhat akin to his home church in northeast Georgia, runs into the pastor's daughter of a local church who is working at a local coffee shop. He discovers the church through a flyer on the counter of the shop that is advertising the church's fall festival. He walks the five miles to the church in a driving rain storm and for his troubles begins a romantic relationship with the pastor's daughter, finds a loving supporting church that spiritually and tangibly backs his efforts to be a missionary on the secular campus of EU, and finds some trouble when the leading church member's daughter is attracted to Danny. The stream of tension runs furious in three tributaries of Danny's life. First, the attacks on his Christian beliefs and value system are relentless. Second, Danny's hedonistic roommate, an art major, mocks his moral values, but then ends up being hit by a truck after a drinking binge. Third, Danny's romantic interest in the pastor's daughter of the church he started attending is complicated by the blonde daughter of the lead deacon in the church, a rich lawyer, aggressively pursuing Danny. Though the book has its light moments it is a serious work to arm Christian students to defend their faith in school and guard them against attacks on that faith. The book does not soft peddle the criticisms against the Bible, but instead tries to answer those criticisms forthrightly. It is the author's long held believe that that Bible and the Christian faith will stand firm against the strongest arguments thrown at them. It is with this aim that the book is written.

Book excerpt: As Skinner argued so pointedly, the more we know about the situational causes of psychological phenomena, the less need we have for postulating internal conscious mediating processes to explain those phenomena. Now, as the purview of social psychology is precisely to discover those situational causes of thinking, feeling, and acting in the real or implied presence of other people, it is hard to escape the forecast that as knowledge progresses regarding social psychological phenomena there will be less of a role played by free will or conscious choice in accounting for them. In other words, because of social psychology's natural focus on the situational determinants of thinking, feeling, and doing, it is inevitable that social psychological phenomena increasingly will be found to be automatic in nature. This 10th book in the series addresses automaticity and how it relates to social behavior. The lead article, written by John Bargh, argues that social psychology phenomena are essentially automatic in nature, as opposed to being mediated by conscious choice or reflection. Bargh maintains that an automatic mental phenomenon is that which occurs reflexively whenever certain triggering conditions are in place; when those conditions are present, the process runs off autonomously, independently of conscious guidance. In his lead article, he focuses on these preconscious automatic processes that can be contrasted with postconscious and goal-dependent forms of automaticity which depend on more than the mere presence of environmental objects or events. Because social psychology, like automaticity theory and research, is also largely concerned with phenomena that occur whenever certain situational features or factors are in place, social psychology phenomena are essentially automatic. Students and researchers in social and cognitive psychology will find this to be a provocative addition to the series.

Linking up with the first volume, The Search for Security in the Pacific, it offers a new and path-breaking understanding of Australia's relations with the world from the outbreak of the First World War to the making of peace in Europe and the Pacific. This study explores a number of fundamental issues that shaped Australia's response to the world in this era, such as race and culture, geopolitics and security, domestic divisions and ideas of loyalty, and the philosophies and personalities of the chief policy makers. From the outset of this global conflict Australia was involved in a 'hot war' in Europe against Germany and its allies, and in a 'cold war' in the Pacific against Japan. The British Australians, for reasons of sentiment and interest, supported the Mother Country, but even as they did so they were deeply concerned about Japan's ambitions. As a result Japan figured prominently in Australia's approach to the war and the peace. The labour movement and the Bolshevik revolution, the ideological clash of the American President and the Australian Prime Minister over peacemaking, the visit of the Prince of Wales, 'Britishness' and the failure of the idea of Greater Britain all influenced the development of Australia's defence and foreign policy. At the end of the book there is an attempt to provide an assessment of Australia's leadership through these testing times and to point out the significance of this experience for a later generation of Australia policy makers.
