Download or read book Synopsis Purioris Theologiae / Synopsis of a Purer Theology written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bilingual edition of the Synopsis Purioris Theologiae (1625) makes available for the first time to English readers a seminal treatise of Reformed Scholasticism. Composed by four professors of Leiden University (Johannes Polyander, Andreas Rivetus, Antonius Walaeus, and Anthonius Thysius) , it gives an exhaustive yet concise presentation of Reformed theology as it was conceived in the first decades of the seventeenth century. From a decidedly Reformed perspective, the Christian doctrine is defined in contrast with alternative or opposite views (Catholic, Spiritualist, Arminian, Socinian). Both on the academic level and on the ecclesiastical level, the Synopsis responds to challenges coming from the immediate context of the early seventeenth century. The disputations of this first volume cover topics such as Scripture, doctrine of God, Trinity, creation, sin, Law and Gospel. Volume One was published in 2014, Volume Two came out in 2016. Volume Three, the final volume, is expected late 2019.
Book Synopsis Swedish Dissertations and their Subjects, 1600–1820 (Volume One) by : Mattias Kärrholm
Download or read book Swedish Dissertations and their Subjects, 1600–1820 (Volume One) written by Mattias Kärrholm and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-09-09 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges earlier understandings of early modern dissertations as unimaginative academic exercises. It argues for their continuous importance in scholarly and scientific discourse, and describes the richness and diversity of their subjects and themes. The book contains a complete catalogue of the almost 20,000 Swedish dissertations defended in Uppsala, Lund and Åbo, 1600 to 1820. The catalogue includes longer comments and descriptions of a few thousand of these dissertations, and also gives an analysis of how different subjects have evolved over time.
Book Synopsis Duplex Regnum Christi by : Jonathon D. Beeke
Download or read book Duplex Regnum Christi written by Jonathon D. Beeke and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this historical study, Jonathon D. Beeke considers the various sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Reformed expressions regarding the duplex regnum Christi (the twofold kingdom of Christ), or, as especially denominated in the Lutheran context, the “doctrine of the two kingdoms.” While a sampling of patristic and medieval sources is considered, the focus is on select magisterial Reformers of the sixteenth century and representative intellectual centers of the seventeenth century (Leiden, Geneva, and Edinburgh). A primary concern is to examine the development of these formulations over the two centuries in question, and relate its maturation to the theological and political context of the early modern period. Various conclusions are offered that address the contemporary “two-kingdoms” debate within the Reformed tradition.

Book Synopsis Humanism and Calvinism by : Dr Steven J Reid
Download or read book Humanism and Calvinism written by Dr Steven J Reid and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across early-modern Europe the confessional struggles of the Reformation touched virtually every aspect of civic life; and nowhere was this more apparent than in the universities, the seedbed of political and ecclesiastical society. Focussing on events in Scotland, this book reveals how established universities found themselves at the centre of a struggle by competing forces trying to promote their own political, religious or educational beliefs, and under competition from new institutions. It surveys the transformation of Scotland's medieval and Catholic university system into a greatly-expanded Protestant one in the decades following the Scottish Reformation of 1560. Simultaneously the study assesses the contribution of the continentally-educated religious reformer Andrew Melville to this process in the context of broader European social and cultural developments - including growing lay interest in education (as a result of renaissance humanism), and the involvement of royal and civic government as well as the new Protestant Kirk in university expansion and reform. Through systematic use of largely neglected manuscript sources, the book offers fresh perspectives on both Andrew Melville and the development of Scottish higher education post-1560. As well as providing a detailed picture of events in Scotland, it contributes to our growing understanding of the role played by higher education in shaping society across Europe.

Book Synopsis Perfect Will Theology by : J. Martin Bac
Download or read book Perfect Will Theology written by J. Martin Bac and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits four early-modern debates of Reformed theology concerning the will of God. Reformed scholasticism advocated a particular relationship between divine knowledge, will, and power, which was altered by Jesuits, Remonstrants, Descartes, and Spinoza. In all these debates modal categories like contingency and necessity play a prominent part. Therefore, these positions are evaluated with the help of modern modal logic including possible world semantics. The final part of this study presents a systematic defense of the Reformed position, which has been charged of theological determinism and of making God the author of sin. In modern terms, therefore, the relation of divine and human freedom and the problem of evil are discussed.

Book Synopsis The Redemption by : Bernard Lonergan
Download or read book The Redemption written by Bernard Lonergan and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thematically focused on the theology of redemption or what is called in theology "soteriology," each of the two sections of The Redemption addresses biblical literature and significant moments in the history of Christian theology, and especially the work of Anselm of Canterbury. The second part of the book presents a significant treatment of the problem of good and evil, and introduces the important category of cultural evil. Most significant from the standpoint of Lonergan's original contribution is the treatment accorded in both Part 1 and Part 2 to what he calls "the just and mysterious law of the cross." The treatment of biblical literature contains a valuable distinction between "redemption as end" and "redemption as medium." Beginning with theses 15-17 from Lonergan's Collected Works, The Incarnate Word, this volume also includes rare and never-before-published texts originally written in the late 1950s.
