This book was released on 2001 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat transfer, thermal stresses, and thermal buckling analyses were performed on the unconventional wing structures of a Hyper-X hypersonic flight research vehicle (designated as X-43) subject to nominal Mach 7 aerodynamic heating. A wing midspan cross was selected for the the heat transfer and thermal stress analyses. Thermal buckling analysis was performed on three regions of the wing skin (lower or upper); 1) a fore wing panel, 2) an aft wing panel, and 3) a unit panel at the middle of the aft wing panel. A fourth thermal buckling analysis was performed on a midspan wing segment. The unit panel region is identified as the potential thermal buckling initiation zone. Therefore, thermal buckling analysis of the Hyper-X wing panels could be reduced to the thermal buckling analysis of that unit panel. "Buckling temperature magnification factors" were established. Structural temperature-time histories are presented. The results show that the concerns of shear failure at wing and spar welded sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This book fills a gap within the finite element literature by addressing the challenges and developments in multidiscipli-nary analysis. Current developments include disciplines of structural mechanics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, controls engineering and propulsion technology, and their interaction as encountered in many practical problems in aeronautical, aerospace, and mechanical engineering, among others. These topics are reflected in the 15 chapter titles of the book. Numerical problems are provided to illustrate the applicability of the techniques. Exercises may be solved either manually or by using suitable computer software. A version of the multidisciplinary analysis program STARS is available from the author. As a textbook, the book is useful at the senior undergraduate or graduate level. The practicing engineer will find it invaluable for solving full-scale practical problems.

This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NASA Dryden Flight Research Center and the Technical University of Munich are cooperating in a research program to assess the impact of unstable long-term dynamics on the flying qualities of planes in hypersonic flight. These flying qualities issues are being investigated with a dedicated flight simulator for hypersonic vehicles located at NASA Dryden. Several NASA research pilots have flown the simulator through well defined steady-level turns with varying phugoid and height mode instabilities. The data collected include Pilot ratings and comments, performance measurements, and Pilot workload measurements. The results presented in this paper include design guidelines for height and Phugoid mode instabilities, an evaluation of the tapping method used to measure pilot workload, a discussion of techniques developed by the pilots to control large instabilities, and a discussion of how flying qualities of unstable long-term dynamics influence control Power design requirements.
