Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sophomore or junior engineering students will appreciate this in-depth analysis of the fundamentals of thermodynamics. The text notes common student problem areas such as definition of systems boundary, units, processes, work and heat. A review of energy resource consumption shows the importance of energy resources to the economy and emphasizes thermodynamic analysis. The systematic approach to solving thermodynamic problems is supported by numerous chapter-end problems graded in three levels of difficulty. Open-ended design problems are included in chapters 10-15 to reflect the increasing emphasis on the need for design in core courses. Extensive treatment of second law analyses, including energy analysis/energy availability, helps students understand real systems. Explanation of how to maximize energy delivery from chemical reactions presents a solid background in improving the design of reacting systems. Accompanying Thermo-Props software saves students time in looking up values from tables, and help in the analysis of psychmetrics, as well as heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems.

The average student, however, in his first attempts to obtain a working knowl edge of this science is staggered by the enormous superstructure, and fails to observe and fix the few fundamentals upon which that superstructure rests. Want of time, and the desire to republish them in a form not very different from the original one, have been my reasons. I have added, for the benefit of the reader who has some knowledge of mathematics, developments of a somewhat more advanced character, mainly taken from the scattered papers of Sir W. Thomson. It confines itself to the most important hypothesis of the mechanical theory of heat, that heat is due to motion, but refuses on principle to specialize as to the character of this motion. This is a safer point of View than the first, and philosophically quite as satisfactory as the mechanical interpretation of nature in general, but it does not as yet offer a foundation of sufficient breadth upon which to build a detailed theory. Starting from this point of view, all that can be obtained is the verification of some general laws which have already been deduced in other. Ways direct from experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thermodynamics and Chemistry No one can write on thermodynamics without being deeply influenced by Willard Gibbs and Max Planck. The writings of the former will always be the admiration (and sometimes the de spair) of the student of thermodynamics on account of the extreme rigor and completeness with which he discusses the subject, while Planck in his Lectures on Thermodynamics has given a treatment which is a model of conciseness, accuracy and logic. It has been my endeavor to write a book which, in addi tion to being accurate, logical and sufficiently rigorous, will fur nish the student with numerous examples of the application of the principles of the science. It is with this object in view that four chapters have been devoted to the phase rule and its applications. Book excerpt: Mon but n'a jamais be de m'occuper des ces matieres comme physicien, mais seulement comme /ogicien ... F. REECH, 1856 I do not think it possible to write the history of a science until that science itself shall have been understood, thanks to a clear, explicit, and decent logical structure. The exuberance of dim, involute, and undisciplined his torical essays upon classical thermodynamics reflects the confusion of the theory itself. Thermodynamics, despite its long history, has never had the benefit of a magisterial synthesis like that which EULER gave to hydro dynamics in 1757 or that which MAXWELL gave to electromagnetism in 1873; the expositions in the works of discovery in thermodynamics stand a pole apart from the pellucid directness of the notes in which CAUCHY presented his creation and development of the theory of elasticity from 1822 to 1845. Thermodynamics was born in obscurity and disorder, not to say confusion, and there the common presentations of it have remained. With this tractate I aim to provide a simple logical structure for the classical thermodynamics of homogeneous fluid bodies. Like any logical structure, it is only one of many possible ones. I think it is as simple and pretty as can be.
