Book excerpt: Soft actuator is a promising candidate for replacing a traditional rigid materials-based actuator when the actuating system requires human compatibility, large degree of freedom for the motion, low fabrication cost, and simple body structure. Among many soft materials, liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) is one of the most advantageous soft active material due to their large macroscopic deformability coupled with molecular level anisotropy. Patterning of LCE with precise control of molecular alignment can generate diverse actuations. In addition, different types of actuation of LCE can be induced by various external stimuli such as heat or light. In this study, we demonstrate radially patterned LCE with predesigned stretch field using a strain engineering technique which is facile, effective, and does not require any sophisticated setup. The radially patterned LCE exhibits fully reversible undulating deformation upon heating or swelling, attributed to the constrained expansion of radially patterned LCE in hoop direction. By applying the strain engineering technique, we design different LCE structures which exhibit diverse actuations like bending, rolling, crawling, or jumping. Incorporation of carbon nanotube (CNT) in the LCE allows photoresponsivity of LCE-CNT composite due to the photothermal effect of CNT. We prepare LCE-CNT rod with molecular alignment in its longitudinal direction which shows heliotropic behavior with multi-directional bending under the light irradiation rather than conventional uni- or bi-directional bending. The bending is induced by the contraction gradient of LCE-CNT rod in thickness which is maximized on the surface towards light, so the bending direction can be tuned by controlling the position of light source. Using the similar LCE or LCE-CNT rod, we show unusual rolling phenomena in which the LCE or LCE-CNT rod keeps rolling while maintaining its initial curvature in the same direction continuously induced by simply placing them on a homogeneously hot flat surface or under the visible light irradiation. Such non-intuitive autonomous rolling phenomena is induced by coupling of inhomogeneously distributed supporting force and gravity, which is triggered by continuous bending deformation of the rod during rolling. We also design a light-driven soft robot based on an arch shape LCE-CNT structure with magnet pieces on each end that performs crawling, squeezing, and jumping motions inspired by deformation traveling of inchworm locomotion and power amplification mechanism of jumping fly larva. The soft robot can perform different motions by switching its shape between arch and closed loop shape under different light irradiation modes, which enables fully reversible biomimetic motions.

Book excerpt: This dissertation describes stimuli-responsive liquid crystals and elastomers including thermal/electro-active ionic liquid crystal elastomers, UV responsive twist bend nematic liquid crystal dimmers and fast-switching chiral ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals with detailed studies on its nanoscale structures, electrical and optical properties for possible electric, optical and electro-optical applications. In this dissertation, the first preparation, physical properties, and electric bending actuation of a new class of active materials - ionic liquid crystal elastomers (iLCEs) are described. iLCEs can be actuated by low frequency AC or DC voltages of less than 1 V. The bending strains of the not optimized first iLCEs are already comparable to the well-developed ionic electroactive polymers (iEAPs). Additionally, iLCEs exhibit several novel and superior features. For example, pre-programmed actuation can be achived by patterning the substrates with different alignment domains at the level of cross-linking process. Since liquid crystal elastomers are also sensitive to magnetic fields, and can also be light sensitive, in addition to dual (thermal and electric) actuations in hybrid samples, iLCEs have far-reaching potentials toward multi-responsive actuations that may have so far unmatched properties in soft robotics, sensing and biomedical applications. The following two works are the understanding of the structure of the twist-bend nematic (NTB) phase. The first work presents hard and tender resonant X-ray scattering studies of two novel sulfur containing dimer materials for which we simultaneously measure the temperature dependences of the helical pitch and the correlation length of both the helical and positional order. In addition to an unexpected strong variation of the pitch with the length of the spacer connecting the monomer units, we find that at the transition to the NTB phase the positional correlation length drops. In the second work we use tender x-ray scattering to decipher the variation of the pitch and heliconical bond order of a NTB dimer containing azo groups upon polarized light illumination. It shows the first evidence of manipulation of the nanoscale heliconical structure of a twist bend nematic liquid crystal dimer containing an azo linkage by polarized light. The tender X-ray pattern reveals two different heliconical pitch values of aligned and unaligned domains under polarized light. In addition to the bulk alignment, the value of the heliconical pitch can be also tuned in two timescales by UV-violet light and recovered in a temperature dependent time. Then we studied the electrical, optical, and electro-optical properties of a ferroelectric nematic (NF) LC material doped with commercially available chiral dopants. While the NF phase of the undoped LC is only monotropic, the chiral NF phase is enantiotropic, indicating a chirality induced stabilization of the polar nematic order. Compared to undoped NF material, a remarkable improvement of the electro-optical switching time is demonstrated. The color of the chiral mixtures that exhibit a selective reflection of visible light in the chiral NF phase, can be reversibly tuned by 0.02-0.1V/[mu]m in-plane electric fields, which are much smaller than typically required in full-color cholesteric LC displays. The fast switchable reflection color at low fields has potential applications for LC displays without backlight, smart windows, shutters and e-papers. In the end, there are summaries and outlooks of all the results and the future applications.

Employing directed self-assembly methods, the inherent anisotropy of nematic liquid crystals can be exploited with spatial and hierarchical patterning of the director profiles. The overarching theme of this work is the exploration and enablement of the functional utility of liquid crystalline elastomers. The research reported hereafter has focused on 1) light control enabled by concurrent shape and color change in cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers and 2) cyclic mechanical examination of the deformation of liquid crystalline elastomers to load. Detailing a facile approach to synthesizing cholesteric liquid crystalline elastomers (CLCEs) that upon heating, exhibit thermochromism. The selective reflection inherent to this phase is thermally tuned more than 200 nm in these solid films, across the visible spectrum. The optical response is directly correlated to thermomechanical expansion of the CLCE film thickness. Broadening of the bandwidth of the selective reflection of the CLCEs is achieved with the incorporation of photosensitive chiral dopants that introduce heterogeneity in the pitch distribution. The mirror-like reflection of this CLCE film is also thermochromic, shifting from the visible to infrared. When combined with the mechanical deformation of voxelated nematic LCE, the thermochromic response of the CLCE produces solid-state elements with concurrent variation of specular and diffuse reflectance. These results demonstrate distinctive potential opportunities for liquid crystal elastomers to control light enabling new application in textiles, optics, and architecture. This work additionally characterizes the stimuli response of nematic liquid crystalline elastomers (NLCEs) prepared with the same synthetic method, exhibiting unprecedented mechanical deformations of nearly 500% strain. Accordingly, this examination seeks to elucidate the mechanical response of NLCEs prepared through chain transfer reactions with diacrylate liquid crystal monomers. The mechanical response to load is explored above and below the yield point. The contribution of higher order patterns, nascent to this material chemistry, are considered and partially inform the distinctive mechanical response. This work assesses the relevance of these materials as flexible substrates for electronic devices and other implementations that could exploit the nonlinear mechanical deformation.
