Several recent developments related to the old problem of understanding/predicting stresses originated from the evolution of the hydration of concrete are at the origin of the creation this technical committee. Having identified a lack in the organization of up-to-date scientific and technological knowledge about cracking induced by hydration heat effects, this STAR aims to provide both practitioners and scientists with a deep integrated overview of consolidated knowledge, together with recent developments on this subject.

Book excerpt: Restraint and intrinsic stresses in concrete at early ages are vitally important for concrete structures which must remain free of water-permeable cracks, such as water-retaining structures, tunnel linings, locks and dams. The development of hydration heat, stiffness and strength, also the degree of restraint and, especially for high-strength concrete, non-thermal effects, are decisive for sensitivity to cracking. Determining thses stresses in the laboratory and in construction components has led to a clearer understanding of how they develop and how to optimize mix design, temperature and curing conditions. New testing equipment has enabled the effects of all the important parameters to be qualified and more reliable models for predictiong restraint stresses to be developed. Thermal Cracking in Conrete at Early Ages contains 56 contributions by leading international specialists presented at the RILEM Symposium held in October 1994 at the Technical University of Munich. It will be valuable for construction and site engineers, concrete technologists and scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tools engineers need for effective thermal stress design Thermal stress concerns arise in many engineering situations, from aerospace structures to nuclear fuel rods to concrete highway slabs on a hot summer day. Having the tools to understand and alleviate these potential stresses is key for engineers in effectively executing a wide range of modern design tasks. Design for Thermal Stresses provides an accessible and balanced resource geared towards real-world applications. Presenting both the analysis and synthesis needed for accurate design, the book emphasizes key principles, techniques, and approaches for solving thermal stress problems. Moving from basic to advanced topics, chapters cover: Bars, beams, and trusses from a "strength of materials" perspective Plates, shells, and thick-walled vessels from a "theory of elasticity" perspective Thermal buckling in columns, beams, plates, and shells Written for students and working engineers, this book features numerous sample problems demonstrating concepts at work. In addition, appendices include important SI units, relevant material properties, and mathematical functions such as Bessel and Kelvin functions, as well as characteristics of matrices and determinants required for designing plates and shells. Suitable as either a working reference or an upper-level academic text, Design for Thermal Stresses gives students and professional engineers the information they need to meet today's thermal stress design challenges.

Book excerpt: This text presents the most effective analysis for predicting the true stresses and deflections of concrete structures, accounting for creep and shrinkage of concrete and relaxation of prestressed reinforcement. Sustainability has become a major requirement in modern structures, which need to sustain satisfactory service over a longer life. It is not rare to specify a life span of 100 years for infrastructure such as bridges. This complete and wide-ranging study of stresses and deformations of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures focuses on design methods for avoiding the deflections and cracking that diminish serviceability. This fourth edition has a new emphasis on designing for serviceability. It has been comprehensively updated. It now includes 65 solved examples and more than 45 instructive problems with answers given at the end of the book. An accompanying website contains design calculation programs, which allow interactive data input. Independent of codes of practice, the book is universally applicable, and is especially suitable for practising engineers and graduate students.

Book excerpt: In each mix, one block was insulated on all six sides to simulate a fully adiabatic process, while the other block was insulated on five of the faces with the top face left open and exposed to environmental conditions. Measurements of the temperature and strain at predetermined locations within the blocks were recorded until the equilibrium temperature was achieved. Using the developed model, a parametric analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of cement heat generation, concrete thermal properties, dimension of concrete structure, insulation of structure, convection of heat, etc. on the temperature distribution and induced stresses in mass concrete structures. Recommendations on methods for evaluating the potential performance of mass concrete structures are presented.

Book excerpt: Concrete structures must be designed not only to be safe against failure but also to perform satisfactorily in use. This book is written for practising engineers and students, and focuses on design methods for checking deflections and cracking which can affect the serviceability of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. The authors present accurate and easy-to-apply methods of analysing immediate and long-term stresses and deformations. These methods allow designers to account for variations of concrete properties from project to project and from country to country, making the book universally applicable. Comprehensively updated, this third edition of Concrete Structures also includes four new chapters covering such topics as: non-linear analysis of plane frames, design for serviceability of prestressed concrete, serviceability of members reinforced with fibre polymer bars, and the analysis of time-dependent internal forces with linear computer programs that are routinely used by structural designers. A website accompanies the book, featuring three design calculation programs related to stresses in cracked sections, creep coefficients and time-dependent analysis. The book contains numerous examples, some of which are worked out in the SI units and others in the Imperial units. The input data and the main results are given in both SI and Imperial units. The book is not tied to any specific code, although the latest American and European codes of practice are covered in the appendices.

Book excerpt: Concrete is well known to behave efficiently in fire conditions, as it is incombustible, does not emit smoke, and provides good thermal insulation. Furthermore, in reinforced concrete structures, the concrete cover gives a natural protection to the reinforcement, and the size of the sections often delays the heating of the core, thus favouring the fire resistance of the structural members. In addition, concrete structures are often robust and therefore able to accommodate local damage without major consequences to the overall structural integrity. However, past experience with real fires shows that a thorough understanding of concrete behaviour and structural mechanics is still needed to improve the design of R/C structures with respect to fire. The objective of fib Bulletin 46 is to augment the current knowledge about concrete and concrete structures under fire, not only for the design of new structures, but also for the analysis and repair of existing fire-damaged structures. Both structural and materials issues are examined, and the results of the most recent research activities on the structural performance of concrete subjected to fire are reported. Special attention is paid to the indirect actions caused by the restrained thermal deformations and several basic examples show how a local fire influences global structural behaviour. fib Bulletin 46 is intended for use by practicing engineers to improve their understanding of the behaviour of concrete structures in fire and thereby produce better and safer design standards.
