Book excerpt: Advanced thermal protection materials envisioned for use on future hypersonic vehicles will likely be subjected to temperatures in excess of 1811 K (2800 F) and, therefore, will require the rapid conduction of heat away from the stagnation regions of wing leading edges, the nose cap area, and from engine inlet and exhaust areas. Carbon-carbon composite materials are candidates for use in advanced thermal protection systems. For design purposes, high temperature thermophysical property data are required, but a search of the literature found little thermal conductivity data for carbon-carbon materials above 1255 K (1800 F). Because a need was recognized for in-plane and through-the-thickness thermal conductivity data for carbon-carbon composite materials over a wide temperature range, Langley Research Center (LaRC) embarked on an effort to compile a consistent set of thermal conductivity values from room temperature to 1922 K (3000 F) for carbon-carbon composite materials on hand at LaRC for which the precursor materials and thermal processing history were known. This report documents the thermal conductivity data generated for these materials. In-plane thermal conductivity values range from 10 to 233 W/m-K, whereas through-the-thickness values range from 2 to 21 W/m-K. Book excerpt: The objective of this project was to develop a low-cost, high thermal conductivity carbon/carbon composite with a mesophase pitch-based matrix. A low cost, continuous powder coating process was developed which allows the production of a flexible pre-impregnated pitch-based powder. This process was used to produce towpreg from AR mesophase pitch powder and three different carbon fibers: T300 PAN-based fiber, P55 pitch-based fiber, and an experimental high thermal conductivity pitch-based fiber. The thermal conductivities parallel to the fibers of the graphitized T300/AR-120 and P55/AR-120 composites was 80.5 and 135.5 W/m-K, respectively. The ribbon fiber enforced composites exhibited thermal conductivities parallel to the fiber and transverse to the fiber of 145 and 213.5 W/m-K, respectively. This indicates fiber shape can affect matrix properties. A finite element model was developed to predict the thermal conductivity of carbon/carbon composites, both parallel and transverse to the fiber direction, composed of isotropic and anisotropic materials. The model was able to accurately predict the average thermal conductivity of the composites made in this study. p2.

Book excerpt: Carbon/carbon composites offer lightweight thermal protection capable of producing excellent thermal materials. To further improve the thermal conductivity along the thickness direction and the interlaminar shear strength, we studied and demonstrated a novel method to stitch carbon nanotube yarns along the through-thickness direction of carbon fiber two-dimensional precursor felt perform to make novel 3D reinforced carbon/carbon (C/C) composites. By stitching nanotube yarns, high strength and thermal conductive CNTs were incorporated into the preform to significantly reinforce and improve thermal conductivity along the thickness direction. In this study, we illustrated the effectiveness of the stitching method to improve through-thickness conductivity (Kz) through both modeling estimations and experimental studies. The C/C composites with 1wt.%-8wt.% stitched nanotube yarns were fabricated using in situ densification process with T300 plane weave precursors. The through-thickness conductivity measurements results using a laser-flash method showed the Kz values of the C/C composites samples with stitched nanotube yarns had large variations. The C/C composite samples with 8wt.% stitched nanotube yarns showed a Kz as high as 24.5W/mK, which was approximately a 44 percent increase compared to 17 W/mK conductivity of the control sample. The Rule of Mixture estimated the conductivity of the nanotube yarns is possibly in the range of 110W/mK through 375W/mK. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman analysis also proved that the nanotubes survived after consolification and carbonization processing temperatures of 2500 to 2800?C. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using stitched nanotube yarns to effectively improve through-thickness conductivity.

Book excerpt: PURPOSE Since the publication of the previous, Fifth Edition of this volume in 1991, the 'advanced' sector of the world-wide composites industry in particular, has seen many company changes in reorganisation, realignment and ownership. These changes have affected the raw material suppliers as well as those moulding the finished product. Changes in the demands of the aerospace, defence and allied industries have largely been the cause. That situation has been particularly true for those manufacturing and distributing reinforcement fibres and fabrics, necessitating this comprehensive Sixth Edition revision. However publication is also timely, because a major and important consequence is the better consideration now being given by the 'commercial' market sector, to the use - and advantages - of some of the carbon, aramid and other high-performance reinforcements, described within these pages. Although supplying at a much lower finished component cost than applies for the aerospace and defence markets, the total tonnage output answering the typically lower-performance requirements of the 'commercial' sector, is higher by many factors. Overall therefore, the summation of output tonnage and price, will continue to favour the latter. Nevertheless this 'commercial' market sector must, albeit slowly, ultimately benefit to a marked degree from an increasing technology spin-off, promoted to an extent somewhat earlier than might otherwise have been expected, by the noted changes in market place demand.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal properties of two directional (2D) pitch-based carbon fiber with charred resin and three directional (3D) PAN-based carbon fiber with CVI carbon matrix C/C composite were investigated for non-heat treated (NHT) and heat treated (HT) materials through the thickness (z-direction). Heat treatment was performed at 1800, 2100 and 2400 oC for 1-hr in inert argon atmosphere. Thermal diffusivity, heat capacity and bulk density were measured to calculate thermal conductivity. Thermal diffusivity and conductivity was the highest for 3D C/C heat treated at maximum temperature with non-heat treated one exhibiting the lowest one. Similarly, 2D C/C heat treated at maximum temperature exhibited the highest thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity. Polarized light microscopy (PLM) images of HTT C/C show a progressive improvement in microstructure when compared to NHT C/C. However, HTT 2D and 3D C/C composites exhibited extensive shrinkage of charred resin and CVI carbon matrix, respectively, from fibers resulting in intra and inter-bundles cracking when compared to NHT one. Raman spectroscopy and XRD results of NHT and HTT C/C indicated increased ordering of structure. A progressive improvement in thermal properties was observed with increased heat treatment temperatures.
