Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transient heat conduction experiments were performed on graphite- epoxy composites with fibers oriented uni-directionally in the matrix. With the fiber axis arranged parallel or transverse to the 4 heat flow direction, effective thermal conductivities and diffusiveities in the three orthogonal directions were obtained. also determined in this work were the isotropic conductivity and diffusivity for the epoxy resin (Fibrite No. 934) as 0.136 BTU/ hr-F-ft. and 8.5. x 10 to the 7th power sec, respectively. A value of k=6.0 BTU/ hr-F-ft for carbon fobers (Hercules 3501-5A) in the axial direction was deduced. For the conductivity transverse to the fibers, a value of 2.4 BTU/hr-F-ft was obtained from the measured effective transverse conductivity values. The thermal capacities (pC) for the carbon fibers and resin used in this study were determined as 48.2 and 44.4 BTU/cu ft 3-F, respectively.

Book Synopsis Thermal Behavior of a Graphite/Epoxy Composite in the Subcured State by : LD. Blankenship
Download or read book Thermal Behavior of a Graphite/Epoxy Composite in the Subcured State written by LD. Blankenship and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal diffusivities for a T300/5208 graphite/epoxy system were calculated from thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and density. These thermal diffusivity data were then used along with an infinite plate model having the fibers oriented in the direction perpendicular to the heat flow to predict temperature profiles during the curing process.
Book Synopsis Directional Thermal Conductivities of Graphite/epoxy Composites: 0/90 and 0/ ± 45/90 by : Lit S. Han
Download or read book Directional Thermal Conductivities of Graphite/epoxy Composites: 0/90 and 0/ ± 45/90 written by Lit S. Han and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work and a predecessor investigation form a two-part experimental research program on the effective thermal conductivities of graphite-epoxy composites - the type which is used extensively in aerospace structures and other applications. Effective thermal conductivities were determined from 90 F to 250 F for composites with fibers arranged in the 0/90 and 0/+ or - 45/90 patterns. The fiber content was 60% by volume. Analysis of the data in this work and the predecessor study established a correspondence principle between the directional effective conductivities of composites with uni-directional fibers and conductivities of other types of fiber arrangements. The correspondence principle allows an approximate but rapid estimate of the quasi-isotropic conductivities of the commonly used balanced-composites. Originator-supplied keywords included: Thermal conductivities, Graphite/Epoxy, and Test equipment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon and glass fibre reinforced composite materials have been used for many years in several different types of applications. However, these conventional composites are derived from non-renewable reinforcements and they pose a significant threat to the environment. Government legislation and consumer behaviour have recently forced many industries to adapt sustainable composites. Industries such as automotive, marine and aerospace are now seeking sustainable lightweight composites with the aim to reduce the overall weight of the components with enhanced materials and design aspects. Therefore, there is high demand on research for the development of sustainable lightweight composites. This book presents a comprehensive review of lightweight composites with the central aim to increase their use in key industrial sectors such as automotive, marine and aerospace. There is no such book currently available that is dedicated to sustainable lightweight applications covering important topics such as key drivers for lightweight composites, mechanical properties, damage characterisation, durability and environmental aspects. Key topics that are addressed include: The roles of reinforcements and matrices in composite materials Sustainable natural fibre reinforcements and their morphological structures Lightweight applications and properties requirements Design, manufacturing processes and their effects on properties Testing and damage characterisation of composite materials Sustainable composites and techniques for property enhancement Future trends and challenges for sustainable composites in lightweight applications It will be a valuable reference resource for those working in material Science, polymer science, materials engineering, and industries involved in the manufacture of automotive and aerospace components from lightweight composite materials. Provides a comprehensive review of sustainable lightweight composites looking at key industrial applications such as automotive, marine, and aerospace and construction Important relationships between structure and properties are analysed in detail Enhancement of properties through hybrid systems, are also explored with emphasis on design, materials selection and manufacturing techniques
