Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1972 book brings together the results of a decade of research into the physics of liquid metals and alloys, a subject of growing interest to physicists, metallurgists and materials scientists at the time. It covers a wide range of phenomena, and for the benefit of newcomers to the field, Dr Faber provides a clear exposition of the physical properties involved, and the relevant theoretical arguments are developed in sufficient detail for an experimentalist who carries rather little in the way of mathematical equipment to follow them. Experienced researchers will appreciate Dr Faber's critical approach and the many previously unpublished results which he has included. The mass of experimental data which he has brought together and the comprehensive bibliography will make the book of great use to readers of both classes.

Book excerpt: This paper presents a model for calculating the surface tension of pure metals and their alloys. It is based upon the theory of Eyring et al which uses classical statistical physics to describe the thermodynamic properties of metals in the liquid state. Calculations show the surface tension of pure aluminum to be nearly 9 percent greater than that measured for pure aluminum having a monolayer of Aluminum Oxide (a1203), is within about 10 percent of measured values for Al-xMg and Al-xCu, where x is the weight percent of the alloying element. The model was also used to calculate the temperature coefficient. For pure aluminum the calculated values fall within experimental measurements, and exhibit a slight temperature dependence. Cast metal composite (MMC) materials reinforced with unidirectional fibers will turn out to be a low cost alternative to MMC fabrication by diffusion bonding, cold and hot compaction, and other methods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive critical survey of the microstructural characteristics of liquid metals which determine properties of viscosity, surface tension, density, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity, diffusion, and velocity of sound transmission. The experimental techniques used to obtain these data are also reviewed. The result is a valuable set of correlations and reference data which enable the reader to understand the basic phenomena underlying the properties of liquid metals. As such, the book will be invaluable for metallurgists and materials engineers working in this area.

Book excerpt: Liquid Metals covers topics about the properties of liquid metals, with emphasis on the microscopic description of the electron states. The book discusses radial distribution function, which is the quantitative way by which the structure of a monatomic fluid may be described, and the scattering of X-rays (or neutrons) from the fluid. The text describes the way by which the forces operating in liquid metals may be qualitatively described; the theory of electron screening in metals; the shielding of a structureless ion core in the Born approximation; and ways by which the structure of the ion core can profoundly influence the shielding. The forces operating between ions in liquid metals; the properties of solid metals; the time-dependent generalization of the structure factor; the dynamics of fluids from inelastic neutron scattering; and the nature of the energy level spectrum of the electrons in a liquid metal are also considered. Students of elementary quantum mechanics and statistical thermodynamics and physicists will find the book invaluable.

Book excerpt: During the last thirty years metal surface physics, or generally surface science, has come a long way due to the development of vacuum technology and the new surface sensitive probes on the experimental side and new methods and powerful computational techniques on the theoretical side. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to the essential theoretical aspects of the atomic and electronic structure of metal surfaces and interfaces. The book gives some theoretical background to students of experimental and theoretical physics to allow further exploration into research in metal surface physics. The book consists of three parts. The first part is devoted to classical description of geometry and structure of metal crystals and their surfaces and surface thermodynamics including properties of small metallic particles. Part two deals with quantum-mechanical description of electronic properties of simple metals. It starts from the free electron gas description and introduces the many body effects in the framework of the density functional theory, in order to discuss the basic surface electronic properties of simple metals. This part outlines also properties of alloy surfaces, the quantum size effect and small metal clusters. Part three gives a succinct description of metal surfaces in contact with foreign atoms and surfaces. It treats the work function changes due to alkali metal adsorption on metals, adhesion between metals and discusses the universal aspects of the binding energy curves. In each case extensive reference lists are provided.

Book excerpt: Providing students as well as engineers and researchers with a must-have insight into the complexities of surface structure and behavior, this monograph extends beyond the usual introductory books, presenting concentrated knowledge on the surface science of metals, and connecting fundamentals with actual applications. Beginning with explanations of the intricacies of surfaces and their differences to bulk, it takes the reader through the vital steps towards macroscopic metallic components as well as surface nanostructuring. In so doing, it makes use of theory, experimental techniques, examples, and modeling to facilitate a firm understanding.
