Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Heat IN preparing this volume my object has been to treat the science of heat in a comprehensive manner, so as to produce a tolerably complete account of the whole subject in its experimental as well as its theoretical aspect. I have consequently enjoyed a freedom in my choice of subject-matter, and mode of exposition, which would not have been possible in a work designed to meet the requirements of some particular class of persons preparing for examinations or engaged in practical pursuits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analytical Theory of Heat Statement of the Object of the Work: Object of the theoretical researches; Different examples, ring, cube, sphere, infinite prism; the variable temperature at any point whatever is a function of the coordinates and of the time. The quantity of heat, which during unit of time crosses a given surface in the interior of the solid, is also a function of the time elapsed, and of quantities which determine the form and position of the surface. The object of the theory is to discover these functions; The three specific elements which must be observed, are the capacity, the conductibility proper or permeability, and the external conductibility or penetrability. The coefficients which express them may be regarded at first as constant numbers, independent of the temperatures; First statement of the problem of terrestrial temperatures; Conditions necessary to applications of the theory. Object of the experiments; The rays of heat which escape from the same point of a surface have not the same intensity. The intensity of each ray is proportional About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Heat Radiation In this book the main contents of the lectures which I gave at the University of Berlin during the winter semester 1906 - 07 are presented. My original intention was merely to put together in a connected account the results of my own investigations, begun ten years ago, on the theory of heat radiation; it soon be came evident, however, that it was desirable to include also the foundation of this theory in the treatment, starting with Kirch hoff's Law on emitting and absorbing power; and so I attempted to write a treatise which should also be capable of serving as an introduction to the study of the entire theory of radiant heat on a consistent thermodynamic basis. Accordingly the treatment starts from the simple known experimental laws of optics and advances, by gradual extension and by the addition of the results of electrodynamics and thermodynamics, to the problems of the spectral distribution of energy and of irreversibility. In doing this I have deviated frequently from the customary methods of treatment, wherever the matter presented or considerations regarding the form of presentation seemed to call for it, especially in deriving Kirchhoff's laws, in calculating Maxwell's radiation pressure, in deriving Wien's displacement law, and in generalizing it for radiations of any spectral distribution of energy whatever. I have at the proper place introduced the results of my own investigations into the treatment. A list of these has been added at the end of the book to facilitate comparison and examination as regards special details. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Heat Engines This book has been written mainly for engineering students, and covers the ground required for University and similar examinations in the theory Of heat engines. It will also be found suitable for students reading for the examinations of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution Of Mechanical Engineers, the City and Guilds of London Institute, and the Board of Education, and should prove useful to the engineer who desires a thorough knowledge of the theory of the subject. The Author feels that no apology is necessary for adding yet another book on this subject because, although many excellent books exist which deal solely with one or two special branches Of the subject, there are very few which deal with the subject as a whole. An attempt has here been made to give in a complete and concise form the thermodynamical and mechanical principles of the subject; to that end all purely descriptive matter has been designedly omitted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of Gravitation, Heat and Electricity I am not sure that everyone will agree with me through out as to the nature of force in general, though all of us, I think, must start together. Our first conceptions of force are derived from the inertia of bodies, either when we attempt to set them in motion, or when, being already in motion, we attempt to arrest them; m other words, it is that idea of force which is derived from mechanical action. But when we attain to more experience, and perceive that mechanical action may be produced bv gravity, heat or electricity, and that these in turn, with exception of gravity, may be produced by mechanical action, we have come to apply the term force also to these agents. We find also that these forces are commeasurable, and that a definite amount of one is consumed or disappears in producing its equivalent of another. When this occurs, we do not say that one is annihilated, and that another to take its place is created, although, for all we know to the contrary, this may be the truth of the case; but we assume, upon the strength of a certain faith which we have in the immutableness of the Divine Nature, which is the true basis of the doctrine of conservation, that no creation and annihilation occurs, but that the forces are converted, and when mechanical action produces heat, it does not create, heat, but becomes heat, and the motion of masses becomes the motion of particles.
