Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of papers and articles in instrumentation previously pub lished in technical periodicals and journals of learned societies. Our selection has been made to illustrate aspects of current practice and applications of instrumentation. The book does not attempt to be encyclopaedic in its coverage of the subject, but to provide some examples of general transduction techniques, of the sensing of particular measurands, of components of instrumentation systems and of instrumentation practice in two very different environments, the food industry and the nuclear power industry. We have made the selection particularly to provide papers appropriate to the study of the Open University course T292 Instrumentation. The papers have been chosen so that the book covers a wide spectrum of instrumentation techniques. Because of this, the book should be of value not only to students of instrumen tation, but also to practising engineers and scientists wishing to glean ideas from areas of instrumentation outside their own fields of expertise. In recent years instrumentation has emerged as a discipline in its own right rather than as an adjunct to traditional science and engineering disciplines. This development has been driven partly by the needs of industries for new and improved sensing techniques, and partly by new technological developments such as microprocessors, optical fibres and in tegrated silicon sensors which are revolutionising sensing and signal processing practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid State Chemical Sensors reviews the basic chemical and physical principles involved in the construction and operation of solid state sensors. A major portion of the book is devoted to explanation of the basic mechanism of operation and the many actual and potential applications of field effect transistors for gas and solution sensing. This text is comprised of four chapters; the first of which describes the basics of device fabrication. Emphasis is placed on the physical description of semiconductor devices with catalytic metal gates, along with their drawbacks and their promise. The behavior of hydrogen in the Pd-SiO2 system is also considered, and some applications of hydrogen-sensitive transistors, such as smoke detection and biochemical reaction monitoring, are described. The second chapter focuses on chemically sensitive field effect transistors and their thermodynamics, while the third chapter explains the general fabrication procedure for solid state chemical sensors. The final chapter introduces the reader to piezoelectric and pyroelectric chemical sensors, paying particular attention to the sensor nature of piezoelectricity, the piezoelectric gravimetric sensor, and pyroelectric gas analysis. This book is intended to assist electrical engineers in understanding the chemistry involved in the construction and operation of solid state sensors and to educate chemists in solid state science.

Book excerpt: This book is a lucid presentation for chemists, electrical engineers, surface scientists, and solid-state physicists, of the fundamentals underlying the construction of simple and small chemical sensors. The first part of the book is a review of the theoretical background in solid state physics, chemistry and electronics. Semiconductor and solid electrolyte bulk models are reviewed as well as solid/gas and solid/liquid interface models. Membranes and catalysis theory are also covered expansively. The second part is a discussion of more complete sensor devices, their essential components, and of the important developments in this area over the last fifteen to twenty years. The book provides guidance through the multidisciplinary world of chemical sensors. It should be understandable to students with some training in physics and chemistry and a general knowledge of electronics. Finally, comments on economic considerations in the development of new sensor products and suggestionsfor future research and development should be of value to company R&D planners.

Book excerpt: Chemical Sensor Technology is a series of annual reviews reporting the latest progress being made in research and technology, both basic and applied, regarding chemical sensors. Chemical sensors continue to grow rapidly in importance encompassing a broad spectrum of technologies covering safety, pollution, fuel economy, medical engineering and industrial processes. Various types of chemical sensors have been devised for detection and monitoring of chemical substances in gases, solutions and organisms, and much work is being done to produce sensitive, selective, reliable and inexpensive sensors. The series aims at contributing to the progress of research and development of chemical sensors. Contributors to the individual volumes are carefully selected by an international editorial board who ensure that as many innovative studies as possible are included. Each article describes a specific topic and is the original work of an expert working in the front lines of chemical sensor research. Contributors are encouraged to describe not only the academic or technological essence of the subject, but also the background and philosophy, evaluation and achievements and future problems. In this way, each topic is described in sufficient depth so as to be useful and stimulating to readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first course devoted to bioelectrochemistry held within the frame work of the International School of Biophysics. Although this branch of scientific research is already about two centuries old, as a truly independent one it has been in a stage of lively development since only a few decades ago and this is why a first course at the E. Majorana Center was devoted to it. Since bioelectrochemistry consists of many sub-fields, it is impossible to include, even superficially, all of them in a short course lasting just a week, and therefore the chapter of redox-reactions was chosen for this first course as being most general in character. But even restricting the course to redox-reactions, only a few subjects could be included and therefore the choice among them was made considering the most general guidelines that could serve as a basis for the further study of individual problems. In this way we hope to give a sound basis to the study of and to stimulate further interest in this branch of both biological and physical chemistry. This dual interdisciplinary approach is, on the other hand, unavoidable if a more rigorous and logical attack on biological problems in living bodies is to be carried ahead. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encyclopedia of Medical Devices and Instrumentation John G. Webster, Editor-in-Chief This comprehensive encyclopedia, the work of more than 400 contributors, includes 266 articles on devices and instrumentation that are currently or likely to be useful in medicine and biomedical engineering. The four volumes include 3,022 pages of text that concentrates on how technology assists the branches of medicine. The articles emphasize the contributions of engineering, physics, and computers to each of the general areas of medicine, and are designed not for peers, but rather for workers from related fields who wish to take a first look at what is important in the subject. Highly recommended for university biomedical engineering and medical reference collections, and for anyone with a science background or an interest in technology. Includes a 78-page index, cross-references, and high-quality diagrams, illustrations, and photographs. 1988 (0 471-82936-6) 4-Volume Set Introduction to Radiological Physics and Radiation Dosimetry Frank Herbert Attix provides complete and useful coverage of radiological physics. Unlike most treatments of the subject, it encompasses radiation dosimetry in general, rather than discussing only its applications in medical or health physics. The treatment flows logically from basics to more advanced topics. Coverage extends through radiation interactions to cavity theories and dosimetry of X-rays, charged particles, and neutrons. Several important subjects that have never been thoroughly analyzed in the literature are treated here in detail, such as charged-particle equilibrium, broad-beam attenuation and geometries, derivation of the Kramers X-ray spectrum, and the reciprocity theorem, which is also extended to the nonisotropic homogeneous case. 1986 (0 471-01146-0) 607 pp. Medical Physics John R. Cameron and James G. Skofronick This detailed text describes medical physics in a simple, straightforward manner. It discusses the physical principles involved in the control and functon of organs and organ systems such as the eyes, ears, lungs, heart, and circulatory system. There is also coverage of the application of mechanics, heat, light, sound, electricity, and magnetism to medicine, particularly of the various instruments used for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. 1978 (0 471-13131-8) 615 pp.
