Book excerpt: Report describing accomplishments in all-optical control of self-injection in laser-plasma accelerators and in developing advanced numerical models of laser-plasma interactions. All-optical approaches to controlling electron self-injection and beam formation in laser-plasma accelerators (LPAs) were explored. It was demonstrated that control over the laser pulse evolution is the key ingredient in the generation of low-background, low-phase-space-volume electron beams. To this end, preserving a smooth laser pulse envelope throughout the acceleration process can be achieved through tuning the phase and amplitude of the incident pulse. A negative frequency chirp compensates the frequency red- shift accumulated due to wake excitation, preventing evolution of the pulse into a relativistic optical shock. This reduces the ponderomotive force exerted on quiescent plasma electrons, suppressing expansion of the bubble and continuous injection of background electrons, thereby reducing the charge in the low-energy tail by an order of magnitude. Slowly raising the density in the pulse propagation direction locks electrons in the accelerating phase, boosting their energy, keeping continuous injection at a low level, tripling the brightness of the quasi-monoenergetic component. Additionally, propagating the negatively chirped pulse in a plasma channel suppresses diffraction of the pulse leading edge, further reducing continuous injection. As a side effect, oscillations of the pulse tail may be enhanced, leading to production of low-background, polychromatic electron beams. Such beams, consisting of quasi-monoenergetic components with controllable energy and energy separation, may be useful as drivers of polychromatic x-rays based on Thomson backscattering. These all-optical methods of electron beam quality control are critically important for the development of future compact, high-repetition-rate, GeV-scale LPA using 10 TW-class, ultra-high bandwidth pulses and mm-scale, dense plasmas. These results emphasize that investment into new pulse amplification techniques allowing for ultrahigh frequency bandwidth, is as important for the design of future LPA as are the current efforts directed to increasing the pulse energy.

This program builds upon expertise already developed over the years through collaborations with the NSF funded experimental effort lead by Professor Howard Milchberg here at Maryland, and in addition the research group at the Ecole Polytechnique in France. As in the past, close coupling between theory and experiment will continue. The main effort of the proposed research will center on the development of computational models and analytic theories of intense laser pulse propagation and guiding structures. In particular, they will use their simulation code WAKE to study propagation in plasma channels, in dielectric capillaries and in gases where self focusing is important. At present this code simulates the two-dimensional propagation (radial coordinate, axial coordinate and time) of short pulses in gas/plasma media. The plasma is treated either as an ensemble of particles which respond to the ponderomotive force of the laser and the self consistent electric and magnetic fields created in the wake of pulse or as a fluid. the plasma particle motion is treated kinetically and relativistically allowing for study of intense pulses that result in complete cavitation of the plasma. The gas is treated as a nonlinear medium with rate equations describing the various stages of ionization. A number of important physics issues will be addressed during the program. These include (1) studies of propagation in plasma channels, (2) investigation of plasma channel nonuniformities caused by parametric excitation of channel modes, (3) propagation in dielectric capillaries including harmonic generation and ionization scattering, (4) self guided propagation in gas, (5) studies of the ionization scattering instability recently identified theoretically and experimentally in the group, and (6) studies of propagation in cluster plasmas. New models will be developed for the harmonic generation of radiation and these will be incorporated in the modeling and simulation.

Book excerpt: We have studied the feasibility of using the 3D fully electromagnetic implicit hybrid particle code LSP (Large Scale Plasma) to study laser plasma interactions with dense, compressed plasmas like those created with Z, and which might be created with the planned ZR. We have determined that with the proper additional physics and numerical algorithms developed during the LDRD period, LSP was transformed into a unique platform for studying such interactions. Its uniqueness stems from its ability to consider realistic compressed densities and low initial target temperatures (if required), an ability that conventional PIC codes do not possess. Through several test cases, validations, and applications to next generation machines described in this report, we have established the suitability of the code to look at fast ignition issues for ZR, as well as other high-density laser plasma interaction problems relevant to the HEDP program at Sandia (e.g. backlighting).

Book excerpt: We examine nonlinear laser pulse dynamics in plasma, encompassing both transverse and longitudinal envelope effects, in isolation and when coupled by the plasma. This is underpinned by an interest in how strong magnetic fields, aligned along the laser axis, modify these processes.In the presence of a strong magnetic field, such that the electron cyclotron frequency is on the order of the laser frequency, there is dramatic modification to the laser-plasma interactions,with the electron motion under left circularly polarised light remaining weakly-relativistic-like at laser intensities typically associated with fully-relativistic behaviour. Conversely right circularly polarised light sees the opposite effect, with the laser-plasma interactions becoming nonlinear at much lower light intensities. This affects all processes underpinned by relativistic motion of the electrons, chiefly self-focusing and self-compression. Such processes are studied in detail for both unmagnetised and magnetised plasma, and the results are compared. We find that not only does an external field alter the relativistic response of the electrons, but it also modifies the laser group and phase velocities, making the pulse shape of interest to the envelope dynamics. We apply this to study spherical compression of a laser pulse, wherein the pulse dimensions reduce symmetrically towards a single cycle. This process results in greatly amplified single-cycle pulses in the lambda-cubic regime, which may peak at over 100 times the initial laser intensity. Finally, the process by which a fully relativistic pulse may amplify an existing magnetic field is examined. We find that while this effect is known of for Laguerre-Gaussian light, it can also occur for linearly polarised light. The pondero motive effect of the laser, and the external field trapping particles which would otherwise escape, bends their trajectories such that a self-sustaining azimuthal current forms. This current scales with both laser intensity and plasma density, and may produce fields of up to 10 kilotesla. We offer that this work may be of interest for the manipulation of low-power or long-wavelength lasers in underdense plasma, the generation of single-cycle pulses for high-harmonic generation and the generation of localised,quasistatic ultra-intense magnetic fields.

Book excerpt: Since 2004, table-top laser-plasma accelerators (LPAs) driven by ~30fs terwatt laser pulses have produced colimated, nearly mono-energetic eletron bunches with energy up to 1 GeV in laboratories around the world. Large-scale computer simulations show that LPAs can scale to higher energy while retaining high beam quality, but will require laser pulses of higher energy and longer duration than current LPAs. The group of Prof. Mike Downer, in collaboration with the Texas Petawatt (TPW) laser team headed by Prof. Todd Ditmire, is setting up an experiment that uses the TPW laser (1.1 PW, 150 fs) to drive the world's first multi-GeV LPA. This thesis provides a general overview of the TPW-LPA project, including several diagnostic systems for the beam, plasma and laser pulse. Special attention is given to three of the diagnostic systems: (1)A transverse interferometry diagnostic of the plasma density profile created by the TPW laser pulse; (2)A Thomson scattering diagnostic of the self-guided path of the TPW laser pulse through the plasma; (3)An optical transition radiation diagnostic of the accelerated electron bunch exiting the plasma. In each case, basic principles, theoretical background, calculation and simulation results, and preliminary experimental results will be presented.
