This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical analysis is made for special cases of the short period and the phugoid or long period oscillations of a non-rolling high speed missile that has a longitudinal plane of symmetry. The linearized equations of motion with time dependent coefficients are derived for short period oscillations of a hypersonic ballistic missile during rapid acceleration or deceleration. It is also shown that the effect of accelerated motion is strikingly different on either the w, q or alpha oscillations. An explicit relation is derived that shows that the atmospheric density gradient will produce a large decrease in the period of the phugoid oscillation, and that this effect increases with the velocity until near orbital speeds are approached. A new parameter is found which predicts the altitude at which the aerodynamic oscillations of a re-entry missile will will effectively begin. This new parameter allows the development of a universal curve which can be used for predicting the high altitude oscillations of hypersonic re-entry ballistic missiles for the linear pitching moment case. Book Synopsis A New Approach to Aeroelastic Response, Stability and Loads of Missiles and Projectiles by :
Download or read book A New Approach to Aeroelastic Response, Stability and Loads of Missiles and Projectiles written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A current trend in the development of missiles is in the direction of more flexibility, higher maneuverability, and higher speeds, all of which require a higher level of fidelity for calculations of stability, loads, control, and guidance. To address these issues, the present interdisciplinary basic research was conducted involving structural analysis, dynamics, dynamic stability, aeroelastic stability, and trajectory analysis of missiles, rockets, and projectiles. A computer code for the dynamic stability, structural dynamics and aeroelastic response of the missile has been written using a geometrically exact, mixed finite element method. The aerodynamic modeling of the loading for the missile body and fins is based on slender body theory and thin-airfoil theory, respectively. Results agree with published results for dynamic stability in addition to limit cycle oscillations for disturbed flight near and above the critical thrust. Parametric studies for specific flexible missile configurations are presented, including effects of flexibility on stability, limit-cycle amplitudes, and missile loads. Although results indicate little potential for affecting aeroelastic stability by use of composite couplings, they do exhibit significant interaction between aeroelastic effects and the thrust, a follower force.
Book Synopsis Missile Motion Sensitivity to Dynamic Stability Derivatives by : T. F. Langham
Download or read book Missile Motion Sensitivity to Dynamic Stability Derivatives written by T. F. Langham and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dynamic derivative sensitivity study was conducted to demonstrate the importance of dynamic derivatives in missile motion simulation studies. Generalized bank-to-turn and yaw-to-turn missile configurations were used with a six-degree-of-freedom linearized stability program. The effects of various dynamic derivatives on missile stability were investigated in both level and turning flight for several Mach numbers and altitude conditions.
Book Synopsis Dynamic Equations for Missile Stability Analysis by : J. L. HIEATT
Download or read book Dynamic Equations for Missile Stability Analysis written by J. L. HIEATT and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report develops a method of presenting missile dynamics such that the equations may be easily adapted to any missile system configuration. Standardization of the missile dynamic equations is accomplished by combining the effects of propellant sloshing, flexible vehicle structure, and engine dynamics in a set of orthogonal coordinates. This approach is termed 'combined mode representation'. The theory of combined mode representation is presented in general terms. The complete missile system dynamic equations are then derived using this representation. The derivation of the equations for obtaining the combined mode coordinates is followed by a description of the computer routine used to solve these equations. Finally an example control system problem is written in terms of combined modes. (Author).

Download or read book Missile Dynamics Equations for Guidance and Control Modeling and Analysis written by Philip N. Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents some techniques used in deriving the equations of motion of a missile for a six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) simulation. Several forms of the equations are developed, and their implementation is discussed. Specific emphasis is placed on showing the interrelation of the equation forms currently in use by showing their development from the basic laws. This report is meant to serve as a primer for new engineers and as a reference for all engineers involved in missile flight simulation.

Book Synopsis Two Non-linear Problems in the Flight Dynamics of Modern Ballistic Missiles by : John D. Nicolaides
Download or read book Two Non-linear Problems in the Flight Dynamics of Modern Ballistic Missiles written by John D. Nicolaides and published by . This book was released on 1958* with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the linear theory has been the backbone of ballistic missile design and has served with excellent success in its various forms over the years, recent spectacular missile flight failures have appeared unexpectedly and are unaccounted for by this linear theory. It is these flight failures which now require attention and consideration of the non-linearities in the fluid force and moment system which contribute to missile flight performance and dynamic stability. Two types of non-linear flight instability have been isolated and identified as NonLinear Magnus Instability, and Catastrophic Yaw. It is these 2 flight instabilities which will be discussed. Approximate mathematical models will be suggested for the evaluation of missile dynamic stability. Both experimental and analytical applications of these models will be made and discussed.

Book Synopsis Aerodynamics of Missiles with Offset Fin Configurations by : Gregg L. Abate
Download or read book Aerodynamics of Missiles with Offset Fin Configurations written by Gregg L. Abate and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subsonic and transonic aerodynamic data for offset fin configurations are presented. Free-flight aeroballistic tests to obtain this data were conducted at atmospheric pressure over a Mach number range of 0.6 to 1.6. The aerodynamic coefficients and derivatives presented were extracted from the position-attitude-time histories of the experimentally measured trajectories using nonlinear numerical integration data reduction routines. Results of this testing and analysis show the static and dynamic stability variations for four different fin offset configurations. The presence of a side moment dependent on pitch angle results in dynamic instability under certain conditions. The stability boundaries associated with this side moment are mapped. Designers should be consider this moment whenever offset fins are utilized. Keywords: Offset fins; Missile stability; Flexible fins; Aerodynamics; Dynamic stability; Side moments. (JHD).
