Les échanges d’impulsion entre photons et atomes sont détectés avec sensibilité dans une expérience de déflexion d’un jet atomique très collimaté, éclairé transversalement par un rayonnement laser résonnant. Les conditions expérimentales sont choisies de façon ç se rapprocher des hypothèses du problème traité par la théorie. En particulier, les atomes de sodium sont préparés préalablement par pompage optique sous forme d’un système à deux niveaux. Cela a permis d’observer des déplacements transversaux des atomes au niveau du détecteur de plusieurs millimètres. Deux cas ont été étudiés expérimentalement. Dans le cas de l’onde progressive, les atomes sont défléchis grâce aux processus absorption-émission spontanée. La valeur moyenne de la distribution spatiale des atomes modifiée par le rayonnement varie avec l’intensité laser suivant la loi de saturation prévue par la théorie. Dans le cas de l’onde stationnaire, c’est l’émission stimulée qui joue le rôle prédominant. La distribution des atomes est cette fois symétrique ; sa largeur se trouve en bon accord avec la largeur théorique.

Book excerpt: Ce travail de thèse est consacré à l'étude expérimentale des propriétés d'un échantillon d'atomes froids de césium. Trois aspects différents de la physique de ces systèmes ont été abordés. Dans la première partie, nous décrivons une étude des propriétés de diffusion spatiale dans un réseau optique à géométrie quasi-périodique. Les caractéristiques déjà très intéressantes du mouvement diffusif dans un potentiel lumineux sont enrichies par la brisure de l'invariance par translation du potentiel, qui donne lieu à des effets particuliers. On a pu notamment mettre en évidence une anisotropie de la diffusion entre les directions périodique et quasi-périodique d'un réseau à symétrie décagonale. La deuxième partie discute les résultats d'une étude expérimentale sur les effets Hanle et Faraday non linéaires dans la transition 4 ® 5 du césium. Les particularités des atomes froids nous ont permis de proposer un modèle simple, basé sur l'équation du pompage optique pour la matrice densité dans l'état fondamental, qui explique de façon satisfaisante les observations expérimentales. Enfin, dans la troisième partie nous abordons le problème des instabilités d'un Piège Magnéto-Optique. Une étude expérimentale détaillée dans le cas d'un piège à trois bras indépendants et faisceaux retour rétro-réfléchis est complétée par un modèle dynamique qui prend en charge les variations spatiales de l'absorption des faisceaux lasers. Nous avons ainsi caractérisé un nouveau régime dynamique, différent du cas stochastique déjà connu, où les instabilités se présentent sous forme d'oscillations auto-entretenues de grande amplitude du nuage atomique.

Book excerpt: Le principal objectif de cette thèse a été de mettre en œuvre des lasers à base de verre phosphate codopé Yb3+:Er3+ pompés par diode afin d’étudier leur comportement lorsqu’ils sont soumis à une rétroinjection optique. Ce type de laser présente, comme principaux avantages par rapport aux autres sources, une grande sensibilité à la rétroinjection, compte tenu des propriétés de l’ion Er3+ favorisant les oscillations de relaxation du laser, et une longueur d’onde d’émission à 1,55 μm qui appartient au domaine de sécurité oculaire. Tout d’abord, nous avons établi pour la première fois les équations d’évolution de l’inversion de population et du champ électrique d’un laser à 3 niveaux (Yb:Er) soumis à un retour optique. Nous avons ensuite réalisé une étude comparative de l’influence du milieu à gain et des paramètres de cavité sur la rétroinjection optique d’un système à 3 niveaux et à 4 niveaux (LNA:Nd). Les lasers, réalisés au laboratoire, ont été mis en œuvre dans des expériences de rétroinjection optique permettant des mesures originales de vitesse et de distance. Avec ces mêmes lasers, des expériences de vibration et de restitution d’un son ont été réalisées avec succès. La troisième partie de la thèse a concerné la mise en œuvre d’un laser bi-fréquence. Un tel laser oscille simultanément sur deux états propres de polarisation orthogonaux dont les fréquences optiques sont légèrement décalées. On peut alors utiliser le battement entre ces deux états propres en rétroinjection optique. Ce type de détection permet une amélioration significative du rapport signal sur bruit obtenu avec une détection homodyne.
