Book excerpt: We performed theoretical studies of liquid helium by applying state of the art simulation and finite-size scaling techniques. We calculated universal scaling functions for the specific heat and superfluid density for various confining geometries relevant for experiments such as the confined helium experiment and other ground based studies. We also studied microscopically how the substrate imposes a boundary condition on the superfluid order parameter as the superfluid film grows layer by layer. Using path-integral Monte Carlo, a quantum Monte Carlo simulation method, we investigated the rich phase diagram of helium monolayer, bilayer and multilayer on a substrate such as graphite. We find excellent agreement with the experimental results using no free parameters. Finally, we carried out preliminary calculations of transport coefficients such as the thermal conductivity for bulk or confined helium systems and of their scaling properties. All our studies provide theoretical support for various experimental studies in microgravity. Manousakis, Efstratios Glenn Research Center

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected Papers of L. D. Landau brings together the collected papers of L. D. Landau in the field of physics. The discussion is divided into the following sections: low-temperature physics (including superconductivity); solid-state physics; plasma physics; hydrodynamics; astrophysics; nuclear physics and cosmic rays; quantum mechanics; quantum field theory; and miscellaneous works. Topics covered include the intermediate state of supraconductors; the absorption of sound in solids; the properties of metals at very low temperatures; and production of showers by heavy particles. This volume is comprised of 100 chapters and begins with Landau's paper on the theory of the spectra of diatomic molecules, followed by his studies on the damping problem in wave mechanics; quantum electrodynamics in configuration space; electron motion in crystal lattices; and the internal temperature of stars. Some of Landau's theories, such as those of stars, energy transfer on collisions, phase transitions, and specific heat anomalies are discussed. Subsequent chapters focus on the structure of the undisplaced scattering line; the transport equation in the case of Coulomb interactions; scattering of light by light; and the origin of stellar energy. This book will be a valuable resource for physicists as well as physics students and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conceptofspontaneous symmetry breaking plays a fundamental role in contemporary physics. It is essential for the description of degenerate ground states, massless modes, and topological defects. Examples are abundant in condensed matter physics, atomic and particle physics, as well as in astro physics and cosmology. In fact, spontaneous symmetry breaking can be re garded as a cornerstone ofa whole branch ofphysics which intersects the above mentioned traditionally distinct fields. In the year 2000 the European Science Foundation (ESF) started the Pro gramme "Cosmology in the Laboratory" (COSLAB), with the goal to search for and to develop analogies betweencondensed matterphysics, particle physics, and cosmology. Not surprisingly, spontaneous symmetry breaking is among the most useful notions in that endeavour. It has been decided that in the sec ond year of the Programme a School should be held in order to work out and deliver to a wide audience of students synthetic overviews of achievements and of current research topics of COSLAB. This idea has been supported by the Scientific and Environmental Affairs Division of NATO by including the School in the renowned series of its Advanced Study Institutes. The School, entitled" Patterns of Symmetry Breaking", was held in Cracow during 16-28 September 2002. It gathered 17 lecturers and about 60 students. The present volume contains notes ofmost of the lectures from that School. We hope that of the physics of spon it will convey to the reader the breadth and the beauty taneous symmetry breaking.

Book excerpt: Quantum Liquids contains lectures presented at the International School of Low Temperature Physics in Erice, Italy, on June 11-25, 1977. The book reviews developments in the study of superfluid phases of the 3He system and in the understanding of quasiparticles and their interactions in the Bose 4He system, along with recent work on the 3He-4He mixtures. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the renormalization group theory, critical phenomena, and phase transition in superfluid helium. It then discusses the superfluid density and the nature of critical singularities, the theory and practice of neutron scattering, and scattering from weakly interacting quantum liquids. The reader is also introduced to the superfluidity of liquid helium films, light scattering from superfluid helium, and the theory of superfluid 3He. Other chapters focus on superfluid flow in helium-4 compared to that in helium-3, the physical properties of small droplets of helium as analogs of heavy nuclei, and experimental properties of superfluid 3He. Excitations in 3He-4He mixtures, bound excitations in liquid He4, and temperature dependence of the single roton energy and lifetime are also discussed. Physicists and students of physics will find this book extremely useful.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors introduce the full content of the Microscopic Theory of Superfluid He II, developed since 1998; also given are brief accounts of the application of one concept from the theory, the QCE1 Superfluidity Mechanism, to superconductors. One peer review report writes: "The authors include more of the underlying physics than some earlier theories, and the comparisons they make with experimental data are satisfactory". The Microscopic Theory of Superfluid He II has several important features, which distinguishes this theory from the previous theories of He II. The immense volume of information the authors have today, especially the pieces of information revealing the microscopic dynamics of the system, was not available to the developers of the previous theories in the 1930s-1940s. This book also demonstrates how the general principles of quantum mechanics and condensed matter physics can be consistently applied to a given system with confidence, once a realistic microscopic model is derived for it. It demonstrates in turn the validity of the general physics principles in such an extreme system as the quantum fluid He II.
