Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theories of Organic Chemistry The general theory of Organic Chemistry is at present in a state of violent transformation. While the old hypothesis of valency with the accepted division into single valencies on the atoms has not yet by any means been abandoned, it is nevertheless no longer looked upon as a noli me tangere. On the contrary, an ever-increasing number of observations would seem to indicate that the division of the original valency force present on the atom is in reality an unequal one and may even vary under different conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical Organic Chemistry Some apology for the appearance of a new text-book of organic chemistry seems necessary; for in face of the multitude of its predecessors, the present volume can scarcely put forward the customary claim of supplying a "long-felt want." Whilst the study of general principles should form the groundwork of every text-book, it is important, in a subject so essentially practical as organic chemistry, to maintain a careful balance between theory and practice. This has been my chief aim. Organic chemistry has been so completely systcmatised - so few of the important links in the chain of facts are missing -that it offers great temptations to the teacher to place before the student a series of equations, qualified by the statement that the substances are acted upon by certain reagents, reduced with nascent hydrogen, treated with oxidising agents, &c., and other vague directions which leave to the student the task of evolving the practical details of the process for himself, and, what is worse, transforming organic chemistry into a series of barren formulae and bald equations. To avoid this as far as possible, a description of the common chemical reagents is introduced at the outset, and a number of simple experiments are described in detail concurrently with an account of many of the reactions. The student is thus encouraged to study the reactions practically - a matter of very great consequence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Organic Chemistry IN several respects this book is somewhat different from similar ones which are in general use at the present time. It is a combina tion of textbook and laboratory manual in which the theoretical discussions and the laboratory experiments are blended together. This arrangement encourages the student to consult the text while he is doing the experiments in the laboratory, with the result that he is more likely to perceive clearly the relation between the theory and the practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class-Book of Organic Chemistry This little volume has been written as an introduction to 'organic chemistry for the use of first year medical students and for senior science students in schools. By treating the theoretical and practical sides of the subject concurrently, it is intended that the book may serve the double purpose of text-book and laboratory manual. It is divided into three parts. In the first part the general principles underlying determinations of purity, empiric and molecular formulae and structure, are explained and illustrated by a careful study of two of the most familiar and most easily procurable organic substances, viz., methyl and ethyl alcohols. In the second part, the aliphatic compounds are described in a more systematic fashion and the third part is devoted to a brief account of the more important members of the aromatic series. It is hoped that the book will fill a gap and serve the purpose for which it was written. I wish to acknowledge the valuable help I have received from Mr. A. T. Simmons in the correction of the proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Radical Theory in Chemistry IN this work I propose to prove that the laws of Organic Chemistry are as simple and orderly as the laws of Inorganic Chemistry, and that the confusion which prevails in the former is attributable in no degree to irregularity in organic com pounds, but to a disregard of the true laws of the science and a devotion to false hypotheses. The work includes a critical inquiry into the authority and importance of the doctrines which are commonly accepted by chemists as sound, and of others, which I recommend for adoption, as better proved and of more universal application. Book excerpt: Provides the background, tools, and models required to understand organic synthesis and plan chemical reactions more efficiently Knowledge of physical chemistry is essential for achieving successful chemical reactions in organic chemistry. Chemists must be competent in a range of areas to understand organic synthesis. Organic Chemistry provides the methods, models, and tools necessary to fully comprehend organic reactions. Written by two internationally recognized experts in the field, this much-needed textbook fills a gap in current literature on physical organic chemistry. Rigorous yet straightforward chapters first examine chemical equilibria, thermodynamics, reaction rates and mechanisms, and molecular orbital theory, providing readers with a strong foundation in physical organic chemistry. Subsequent chapters demonstrate various reactions involving organic, organometallic, and biochemical reactants and catalysts. Throughout the text, numerous questions and exercises, over 800 in total, help readers strengthen their comprehension of the subject and highlight key points of learning. The companion Organic Chemistry Workbook contains complete references and answers to every question in this text. A much-needed resource for students and working chemists alike, this text: -Presents models that establish if a reaction is possible, estimate how long it will take, and determine its properties -Describes reactions with broad practical value in synthesis and biology, such as C-C-coupling reactions, pericyclic reactions, and catalytic reactions -Enables readers to plan chemical reactions more efficiently -Features clear illustrations, figures, and tables -With a Foreword by Nobel Prize Laureate Robert H. Grubbs Organic Chemistry: Theory, Reactivity, and Mechanisms in Modern Synthesis is an ideal textbook for students and instructors of chemistry, and a valuable work of reference for organic chemists, physical chemists, and chemical engineers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Advances in Organic Chemistry A bibliography of the subject has been appended to the book, but it must be understood that it is not intended to be complete; while the same may be said with regard to the references at the foot of the pages. In both cases the aim has been to furnish a guide to readers unacquainted with the literature rather than to give a complete list of publications. For the convenience of the reader, explanatory footnotes are distinguished by asterisks, while references to the literature are numbered. This, it is hoped, will obviate much unnecessary reference to the foot of the pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
