Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theology as Science: And Its Present Position and Prospects in the Reformed Church For the same reason I have also added the Inaugural Lecture delivered three years ago, when I entered upon my work in this University. Under the pressure of my duties at the time, I did not think of publishing it then, according to the usual custom, and it is reproduced here, not only because of its relevancy as so far completing this discussion, but because some passages had to be omitted during its delivery from want of time, on account of which it was not wholly reported. I have preserved the direct forms of address, because my primary aim is to put these Lectures into the hands of my students as a sort of general introduction to theological thinking, and to be relieved of the need of repeating them in the class-room. But others who are interested in our work may be also interested in this comparatively full exposition of the theological standpoint on which it is conducted. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theology as an Empirical Science Theology, in its days of undisputed supremacy, was defined as the science Of God. Of late, under the stress of much hostile criticism, there has been a strategic retreat, and the definitions generally favored are modest statements to the effect that theology is the intellectual expression of religion. The general situation, however, has come to be such as calls for a counter attack, having as its objective the recovery of a scientific status for theology, and a much stronger and more secure consolida tion of this scientific position than originally existed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Professor's Wallet I. Of my lamented predecessor Icannot speak from personal acquaintance, but it is now over four years since I became impressed with his mental tendencies and theological power by reading the little volume which he then published, entitled Theology as Science, and its Present Position and Prospects in the Reformed Church. To me the book brought a feeling of immense encourage ment. A voice seemed to have spoken at the due hour and in the needed tones, declaring two things - first, that Theology is in a position to vindicate its place in a University as fully to-day as in its palmiest times; and secondly, that the dogmatic structure of the Reformed Churches, apparently rather weather-worn and even ruinous, is capable of being illuminated and strengthened, so that it may rear its head as loftily as in its first massive and solemn beauty. Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology by : ABRAHAM KUYPER (JR.)
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology written by ABRAHAM KUYPER (JR.) and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology: Its Principles is the second in a three-volume series. Written by Abraham Kuyper and translated into English by Reverend J. Hendrick Devries, it is a massive book about the history of theology and its place amongst the sciences. This volume does not contain the typical contents of an encyclopedia. Instead of a series of short entries on a variety of topics, Kuyper's book reads much more like a history text. The book is divided into three parts, each of which consists of multiple chapters. The first part is a discussion of the very name of the Theological Encyclopedia, and whether this is an appropriate naming convention to follow. The second part examines the organism of science, and theology's place within the accepted scientific disciplines. The third and final part is a detailed discussion of theology itself, with chapters on the conception, methods and history of the discipline, and more. The book concludes with a brief index of the topics discussed and the proper names referred to. Kuyper's work is extensive and challenging. The book presents an extremely detailed and nuanced discussion of the nature of theology. At more than 700 pages, it is no short work, particularly when one considers that it is only one volume in a three-volume set. Kuyper's Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology: Its Principles is an advanced work about the study of theology. It is not a 'light' read, but one that contains an enormous amount of information. For those serious about the study of theology, Kuyper's work cannot be missed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Systematic Theology, Second Edition by : Wayne A. Grudem
Download or read book Systematic Theology, Second Edition written by Wayne A. Grudem and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 1617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem is one of the most important resources for helping you understand Scripture and grow as a Christian. The most widely used resource of the last 25 years in its area, Systematic Theology has been thoroughly revised and expanded for the first time while retaining the features that have made it the standard in its field: clear explanations, an emphasis on each doctrine's scriptural basis, and practical applications to daily life. With nearly 250 pages of new content and revisions, this new edition now includes the following distinctive features: Updated analysis of recent controversies within evangelical theology, including the eternal relationship between the Father and the Son in the Trinity, the role of women in the church, miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit, and contemporary worship music. New discussion and critiques of recent theological controversies situated outside of traditional evangelical theology, such as open theism, the "new perspective on Paul," Molinism (or "middle knowledge"), "Free Grace" theology, and the preterist view of Christ's second coming. Completely revised chapter on the clarity of Scripture. Completely revised chapter on creation and evolution, including a longer critique of theistic evolution and an extensive discussion on the age of the earth. New discussion of how biblical inerrancy applies to some specific "problem verses" in the Gospels. Additional material explaining evangelical Protestant differences with Roman Catholicism, Protestant liberalism, and Mormonism. Completely updated bibliographies. All Scripture quotations updated from RSV to ESV. Updated section on contemporary worship music. Numerous other updates and corrections. Part of the brilliance of Systematic Theology has been its simplicity and ease of use. Each chapter follows the same structure: discussion of the doctrine being considered, an explanation of that doctrine's biblical support and possible objections, followed by personal application and key terms to know for personal growth. Chapters also include a Scripture memory passage, references to other literature on the topic, and suggested hymns and worship songs. If you think theology is hard to understand or boring, then this new edition of Systematic Theology will change your mind.
