Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Taming of the Shrew is perhaps one of Shakespeare's most controversial plays by modern standards. Hinging on the courtship between the arrogant Petruchio and the "shrew" of the title Katherina, it is unclear whether Shakespeare's blatantly misogynistic themes were in earnest or tongue in cheek. The charming and tender Bianca is forbidden to marry until her elder sister, Katherine is spoken for. Bianca's suitors enlist Petruchio to woo Katherina for her dowry. Petruchio embarks on his own brand of psychological torture and in so doing manages to "tame" the stubborn Katherine who morphs into the faultless submissive wife.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Taming of a Shrew: Upon Which Shakespeare Founded His Comedy, Reprinted From the Edition of 1594, and Collated With the Subsequent Editions of 1596 and 1607 Having undertaken, with the concurrence of the Coun oil of the Shakespeare Society, to prepare for the press a reprint of the old Play of The Taming of a Shrew, on which Shakespeare founded his lively and popular Comedy of The Taming of the Shrew, my desire has been to give, with scrupulous accuracy, the texts of the three earliest editions, published in 1596, and 1607. As these are all of the greatest rarity, there being but one copy known to be preserved of the first and second, and only three copies of the last of these editions, it seems desirable that a concise notice of each should be given, adverting to the circumstances which placed them in my hands. It was one of his earlier plays, believed to have been written between 1590 and 1594. The play begins with a framing device in which a drunkard is deceived into thinking he is a nobleman who then watches the "play" itself, which depicts a nobleman, Petruchio, who marries an outspoken, intelligent, and bad-tempered shrew named Katherina. Petruchio manipulates and "tames" her until she is obedient to his will
