Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: As the twentieth century began, Black and white southerners alike dealt with low life expectancy and poor healthcare in a region synonymous with early death. But the modernization of death care by a diverse group of actors changed not only death rituals but fundamental ideas about health and wellness. Kristine McCusker charts the dramatic transformation that took place when southerners in particular and Americans in general changed their thinking about when one should die, how that death could occur, and what decent burial really means. As she shows, death care evolved from being a community act to a commercial one where purchasing a purple coffin and hearse ride to the cemetery became a political statement and the norm. That evolution also required interactions between perfect strangers, especially during the world wars as families searched for their missing soldiers. In either case, being put away decent, as southerners called burial, came to mean something fundamentally different in 1955 than it had just fifty years earlier.

After his birth in southern Indiana, he grew up mostly in rural areas and small towns. He was educated in a one-room schoolhouse with different grades in different rows. He completed his course of study to become a minister at Kentucky Mountain Bible Institute and was ordained in the Church of the Nazarene. He spent most of his life as a pastor preaching the gospel. His memoir, presented in five parts, begins with his childhood years in the early forties, during World War II. From his near death experience at two from pin worm to the memories of his childhood in Indiana, he captures the essence of times gone but not forgotten. Part two explores the trials and victories of his journey as a preacher in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. In part three, he recalls leaving the mountains and returning to Indiana with his wife and partner in ministry. Finally, in parts four and five, he explores creation and offers proof of a living God and inspirational messages about the Christian faith. In Memory of the Good Old Days offers inspiring messages on faith and hope interspersed with tales of a life well lived.

Book excerpt: This is a true story. His eye balls were rolling inside his skull as he came out of Cecilia's home. "What is the problem?" we asked him. This is not the person I use to know because his behavior changed. As we began to pray for him, he turned violent that three of us could hardly hold him down. About one hundred and forty four demons were cast out of him. The last twelve demons refused to leave as they claimed ownership of this brother. We stood our ground that brother Paul is a child of God. We rebuked and cast them out. Reluctantly they left, remaining their leader that also left after all false claims. This violent brother by now was slain in the spirit and slept like a baby for quite some time. When he woke up he looked surprised wondering what has happened. What happened was that he had gone and laid hands on this said Cecilia when he heard her screaming and shouting. Cecilia was not born again and had been demon possessed and ran mental for years. The junior sister who is a Christian shared with us in fellowship how the demons that visit or that are in her senior sister Cecilia one day threw her, the junior sister out of her own room to the outside. No hands seen but she was lifted up and thrown out. As Paul laid hands on her, demons transferred into Paul's hand to his body...Can a Christian be demon possessed or demonized, oppressed, depressed, or suppressed? More inside this book. Book excerpt: At the age of sixty-seven, Percy Bullchild (1915?1986), a Blackfeet Indian from Browning, Montana, with little formal education in English, set out to put the oral traditions and history of his people into a permanent written record. He regarded this undertaking?to ?write the Indian version of our own true ways in our history and legends,? as he puts it?as both a corrective and an instructive tool. Bullchild culled this remarkable collection of historical legends from his memory of the oral history as it was passed down to him by his elders and by seeking out the oral traditions of other tribes. These stories, like all legends, Bullchild reminds us, ?may sound a little foolish, but they are very true. And they have much influence over all of the people of this world, even now as we all live.? Woody Kipp provides a preface for this Bison Books edition.

Her account of the revolutionary rhetoric, set against the reality of what the revolutionaries were actually doing, is as macabre as any of the descriptions of bodies." --The Wall Street Journal "This is a powerful and compelling story of terror, struggle and death sprinkled with moments of tenderness, written by a woman who writes not of politics but only of what she experienced."--New York Times Book Review In 1975, Molyda Szymusiak (her adoptive name), the daughter of a high Cambodian official, was twelve years old and leading a relatively peaceful life in Phnom Penh. Suddenly, on April 17, Khmer Rouge radicals seized the capital and drove all its inhabitants into the countryside. The chaos that followed has been widely publicized, most notably in the movie The Killing Fields. Murderous brutality coupled with raging famine caused the death of more than two million people, nearly a third of the population. This powerful memoir documents the horror Cambodians experienced in daily life.
