Book excerpt: Themes, Issues and Debates in Psychology, Third Edition, cuts across the traditional boundaries found in most textbooks and syllabuses between broad areas or fields in psychology, bringing together ideas from across the subjects. Because of its thematic approach, the book is of great value to a wide range of students, from A level to undergraduate. The book's central aim is to integrate topics, theories and areas of research that are usually treated as separate and unrelated. This complements the topic-based approach by: broadening discussion of 'traditional' areas such as personality, abnormal behaviour, sex differences, and the history and nature of psychology; and adopting a critical approach to these topic areas. This more critical approach is reflected in the frequent discussion of social constructionism, including the related areas of feminist, critical and discursive psychology. There is also discussion of philosophical/theoretical issues and debates, such as ethics, free will and determinism, and consciousness and the mind-brain relationship. Every chapter includes material familiar to students from other textbooks and from their classes. The book is designed to stimulate critical thinking and to encourage a broader, more integrated approach to essay-writing and seminar presentations. With excellent chapter summaries and suggestions for further reading, Themes, Issues and Debates in Psychology, Third Edition remains an ideal text for all students wishing to view their subject in a way that is more true to our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysical Themes in Thomas Aquinas III is Msgr. John Wippel’s third volume dedicated to the metaphysical thought of Thomas Aquinas. After an introduction, this volume of collected essays begins with Wippel’s interpretation of the discovery of the subject of metaphysics by a special kind of judgment (“separation”). In subsequent chapters, Wippel turns to the relationship between faith and reason, exploring what are known as the preambles of faith. This is followed by two chapters on the important contributions by Cornelio Fabro on Aquinas’s distinction between essence and esse and on participation. The volume continues with articles on Aquinas’s view of creation as a preamble of faith, Aquinas’s much-disputed defense of unicity of substantial form in creatures, his account of the separated soul’s natural knowledge, and Aquinas’s understanding of evil in his De Malo 1. The volume concludes with an article comparing Bonaventure, Aquinas, and Godfrey of Fontaines on the metaphysical composition of angelic beings. Most of these issues were disputed during Aquinas’s time by some of his contemporaries, and the proper understanding of each continues to be debated by various students of his thought today. Wippel’s purpose, therefore, is to help clarify our understanding of Aquinas’s thought on each of these topics, a task that requires the careful analysis of primary sources and of secondary literature and attention to the relative chronology of his writing.

Book excerpt: Individual chapters treat the poetry Ewart contributed to various "little magazines" during the 1930s and 1940s; references in Ewart's poems to poetic craft, audience, and tradition; and his handling of characteristic themes including place, the world of work, marriage and children, and death. A full chapter is devoted to the erotically charged poetry for which Ewart was probably best known; the author argues that the richness of this poetry arises from the dynamic interplay of two contrasting poetical personae."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: This volume, in the series Cambridge Readings in the Literature of Music, is an anthology of original German, French and English writings from the period 1851-1912. Throughout the second half of the nineteenth century music continued to be a subject to which philosophers, psychologists, scientists and critics repeatedly addressed themselves. Some of the philosophical approaches followed the tradition of the German speculative philosophy of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Elsewhere the new 'scientific' climate of the nineteenth century left its mark on the work of scientists and psychologists interested in the impact of acoustical stimuli on the human mind or in the role of music and song in the prehistory of mankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambient Intelligence lies at the confluence of several trends: the continued decrease in cost and size of computing technology; the increasing availability of networking and communication infrastructure; the growing public familiarity/comfort with computing artifacts; and practical advances in artificial intelligence. These developments make it possible to contemplate the ubiquitous deployment of intelligent systems - prototypically in smart homes, but more broadly in public spaces, private automobiles and on individual appliances and hand-held devices - in applications ranging from entertainment through eldercare, to safety critical device control. Ambient Intelligence is a young field. As a result, it has been natural to wonder what the technology can do to improve the way we live. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly important to ask: "What do we want?" since the intent is to embed technology in new and pervasive ways. The contributions in this volume provide a window into the visions and trends currently dominating the area of Ambient Intelligence. This publication is divided into three sections. The first describes visions for the future of Ambient Intelligence, the second addresses core technology of the field and the third provides an analysis of elements of the area which will demand special consideration during the future development of the area.

Book excerpt: An examination of the Hebrew Scriptures reveals the ethical situations in ancient Israel as a structural analysis, and exposes a covenantal triangle that features a dynamic of giving and receiving, taking and paying penalties, as a meme for human relationships. This can be applied to groups as well as individuals and is surprisingly applicable to life in the twenty-first century. Two senses of "Law"--natural scientific discoveries and the rules laid down by a divine creator--lead to frames for considering these covenantal relationships, and even the existence of "Sin." Are we bound to obey the rules laid down by God, or may we decide what is best for us?

Book excerpt: Conflict, sadly, is part of our everyday life; experienced at home, in the workplace, on our TV screens. But is it an inevitable part of the fabric of our existence? In this volume, eight experts examine conflict at many levels, from the workings of genes to the evolution of galaxies. Evolutionary biologist David Haig examines why we disagree with ourselves, and psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen asks whether differences between the average male and female mind must necessarily lead to misunderstanding. Anthropologist Richard Wrangham explores why chimpanzees and humans have evolved to kill, while archaeologist Barry Cunliffe examines the roots of warfare. Political scientist Lisa Anderson analyses conflict in the Middle East, and broadcaster Kate Adie reflects on television reporting of war. The book concludes with industrial economist William Brown's discussion of conflict in labour relations, and an exploration of the creative and destructive effects of cosmic violence by physicist P. C. W. Davies.
