The community was Athens; the victory was at Marathon, and the civic idea was democracy. The struggle was not over. War and civic struggles continued for the following generation of Athenians. This is their story and the next chapter of democracy.

Book excerpt: The next few seconds seemed to be played out in slow motion. Achmaed couldn't avoid the collision, but he did manage to turn enough so that the container occupied the space between him and the two onrushing antagonists. They slammed hard into its surface, driving Achmaed backwards and loosening his grip on the package. The container twisted in the air and smashed against the edge of the yacht yielding a loud cracking noise. Before anyone involved in the scuffle could react, the container popped open and a Grecian urn, which had been its contents, flew out, rolling end over end in the air like a large football. Achmaed felt himself gasping involuntarily as the priceless piece of antiquity smashed against one of the sizeable steel spars that projected from the side of the Aquarius. It was the last Achmaed would see of Asan's prized treasure. The gritty contents of the urn sprayed into the air as the urn split into a thousand pieces. Achmaed watched with his last moment of consciousness as the debris spread into the air like a flock of migrating birds and then fell into the waters of the Aegean Sea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petitioning Osiris re-edits, re-analyses, and re-contextualises the "Old Coptic Schmidt Papyrus" and "Curse of Artemisia" – written petitions to different manifestations of Osiris – among the Letters to Gods in Demotic, Greek, and Old Coptic from Egypt. The textual traditions of the Letters to Gods, to the Dead, and Oracle Questions which evidence that ritual tradition of petitioning deities are contextualised among contemporary textual traditions, such as Letters and Petitions to Human Recipients, and Documents of Self-Dedication, and compared to later ritual traditions such as proactive and reactive curses without and with judicial features (so-called Prayers for Justice) in Greek and Coptic from Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean. As with all other Letters to Gods, the Old Coptic Schmidt Papyrus and Curse of Artemisia evidence not only the struggles and aspirations of their petitioners, but also the way in which they conceptualised that they could bring about desired outcomes in their lived experience by engaging divine agency through a reciprocal relationship of human-divine interaction. Petitioning Osiris therefore provides a starting point and springboard for readers interested in these, or comparable, textual and ritual traditions from the Ancient World.

Book excerpt: Corfu's exotic beaches are a matchless place to meet true love…or at least to have a fabulous fling! And that's exactly what Philly Angelis needs. After all, she's a survivor of unrequited love…and an embarrassingly rejected sexual proposition. Fleeing to Greece to soak in its sexy magic—as well as to find a hot guy to take her mind off her longtime crush, Roman Oliver—seems the perfect antidote. Roman can't believe what he's doing. Philly is his best friend's little sister—definitely hands-off! So why is he following her to Corfu? And why is he taking her outrageously delicious sexual proposition seriously? Maybe because Philly's all woman now—a woman who knows exactly what she wants. And, God help him, Roman's going to give it to her….

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic sites celebrate defining moments in history, memorialize important events and people, and contribute to the character of the locations where they are situated. Heritage designation, both globally and nationally, is an inherently contested issue. As detailed in this volume, concerns of politics and identity, criteria for designation, impacts on communities and sites, and challenges to management planning are central to any understanding of the process by which heritage sites are created, developed, and maintained. The idea for this volume originated at a symposium hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design. Contributors address such topics as the need to revamp criteria for designation, the effect historic site recognition has on local communities, the challenges encountered in maintaining a site, and issues linked to specific political climates or actions and group identity. The contributors constitute an international cast of leading scholars, employees, and policy-makers, all of whom have had extensive experience with World Heritage and National Register site stewardship. The work will be an invaluable reference for historians, architects, and those committed to the preservation of national monuments.

Book excerpt: He thought of his wife and son. At this hour, they would be asleep, blissfully unaware of the ghastly events that were playing out on the Aegean. “We only have a small window of opportunity to get this job done before the night fishermen return to Mykonos and the morning fishermen go out. If they see us, they may become curious and ask what we are doing or worse still, inform the coast guard.” Michael, an accounts executive from New York City, is devastated by the untimely death of his wife. His doctor recommends he takes a vacation. Michael travels to Greece, the ideal location to translate a nineteenth-century diary written by a French archaeologist, bought a few years prior at a book market in Paris. Unbeknown to him, the Aegean islands have recently experienced a horrific crime. During the theft of five ancient statues from the sacred island of Delos, fourteen archaeologists were murdered. With the help of Althea, a beautiful Greek lady from the island of Mykonos, Michael begins to translate the diary, but there are others who also have an interest in it. As a consortium of international agents carries out their investigation into the stolen statues, Michael finds himself an innocent participant, not only in their enthralling investigation but also in a kidnapping. It is a world that is foreign to him; a world fraught with intrigue and deception. “‘In 1930 I was the Head Archaeologist on the sacred island of Delos’”. Fabien stopped reading and looked at the Host. “I’m afraid this was where my grandfather started crying and rambling but I wrote down what he said as best I could. Shall I continue reading?” “Yes, do go on.” “‘We hid the treasure. Looking back, I know that what we did was wrong. Please tell the Greek authorities about the treasure and ask her citizens to forgive a greedy and dying old man.’” Mervyn Nel graduated from the University of Johannesburg with a National Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Psychology. He has written multiple articles which have been published in mainstream magazines. After a long and fulfilling career as a Credit Evaluation Manager in a leading financial services organisation, he left the corporate world to pursue his passion for writing. He is currently working on his latest novel, The Postojna Manuscript. The backdrops to his novels are inspired by his travels across the globe. When he is not writing, he can be found pottering around in his garden in Weltevredenpark, South Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence and community were intimately linked in the ancient world. While various aspects of violence have been long studied on their own (warfare, revolution, murder, theft, piracy), there has been little effort so far to study violence as a unified field and explore its role in community formation. This volume aims to construct such an agenda by exploring the historiography of the study of violence in antiquity, and highlighting a number of important paradoxes of ancient violence. It explores the forceful nexus between wealth, power and the passions by focusing on three major aspects that link violence and community: the attempts of communities to regulate and canalise violence through law, the constitutive role of violence in communal identities, and the ways in which communities dealt with violence in regards to private and public space, landscapes and territories. The contributions to this volume range widely in both time and space: temporally, they cover the full span from the archaic to the Roman imperial period, while spatially they extend from Athens and Sparta through Crete, Arcadia and Macedonia to Egypt and Israel.
