Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Zinc Deposits of Northeastern Tennessee Topography and drainage - The controlling surface features of the area within which the zinc deposits occur are northeast-southwest ridges, with their intervening valleys. The ridges, which lie in the middle part of the area, stand up from a few hundred to more than feet above the surrounding country, and many are properly called moun tains. Beginning with the south and naming them in their order north ward, the principal streams are Holston, Clinch, and Powell rivers. All these have a southwesterly course and empty into the Tennessee. The valley of the Holston is wide and open, and is occupied by well rounded hills from to feet above sea level. Clinch River flows through and follows the course of the ridgy part of the area, winding its way from one ridge to another, or through ridges, forming water gaps, and for the most part lying in a narrow valley. Powell River lies between the ridges of the area and Cumberland Plateau to the northwest. Southwest of Tazewell, the water divide between Clinch and Powell rivers is poorly defined. The area between these streams is much broken, the hills being promiscuously arranged, with steep, tough soil-covered slopes, and with crests from 200 to 500 feet above the intervening val leys. A striking feature of this area is the great number of large sink-holes. Many of these have the usual funnel-shaped form common to such de pressions, and may be expected upon either flats or Slopes; but there are many that assume the shape and size of erosion valleys. The length of such is measured in miles. They are several hundred feet deep, and have large tributary valleys entering from the sides. These are all depressions of solution, formed by the work of ground-water upon the limestone of the area, and the drainage into them passes ofi underground. Even in the formation of the valleys which open out into the streams, solution has been a factor at least equally important with erosion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zinc Mining in Tennessee The central belt occupies the valley of the Holston River, and is called the Holston Valley zinc belt. This belt has ores containing zinc with no lead and less than per cent iron. The more northerly ore bodies, near the Powell River, and the southerly belt, near the French Broad River, carry both iron and lead. The ore bodies along the northerly belt, which include the district in the vicinity of the Powell River, the Clinch River, and between these two rivers, near the city of New Tazewell, in Claiborne County, and in Union County, are extremely large. The ores are a compact blende, or what is called zinc sulphide, being mined frequently in huge blocks several feet thick, assaying 45 to 50 per cent zinc. This ore, however, is extremely difficult to mill, but makes a good smelting ore. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zinc and Lead Deposits of Northern Arkansas The stage of development of the field is such that the report is in a sense a preliminary one, as few of the ore bodies have been worked sufficiently to deter mine their extent. There are many openings and prospects and a few producing mines. The examination of the prospects consumed much of the time, and although the information obtained from them was valuable as indicating the position and manner of occurrence of the ore bodies, it was often unsatisfactory because the openings were of limited extent or had been made so long ago that they were covered with debris. Only a few of the mines which have underground workings were accessible, since most of them were idle and filled with water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin of the Zinc and Lead Deposits of the Joplin Region: Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma The author Of the present report has been studying the zinc and lead deposits Of the Joplin region for the last 12 years, although his work has not lain continuously in that field. His knowledge Of these deposits is consequently both intimate and extensive. It is usual in presenting the results Of an investigation to publish with the con clusions all the facts upon which the conclusions rest. Mr. Siebenthal has not followed this plan. Having reached definite decisions on the question Of how the ores were deposited, he has deemed it best to put these decisions and the significant facts on which they are based in form for immediate publication. A full presentation Of his evidence will require an account Of the general geology Of the region, with detailed descriptions Of local tracts and individual mines. The prep aration Of this descriptive material, which must necessarily include many maps and illustrations, will require considerable time and some additional field work. The data will be published as a volume supplementary to the present report. The lead and zinc deposits Of the Mississippi Valley are not only Of great economic importance, but have long been intensely interesting to students Of ore deposits. They constitute a conspicuous example Of the occurrence Of sulphide ores in a region where, so far as can be determined, plutonic or volcanic activities can have had no part in their genesis. Naturally the Joplin deposits have been much studied, and Mr. Siebenthal, on pages 39 - 41 Of the present bulletin, has summarized the views Of his predecessors, among whom have been some very able workers in economic geology. As he shows, there is not an important formation in the region that has not, at one time or another, been regarded as a source Of ore constituents. Under these circumstances it was scarcely to be expected that he would add to the number Of more or less reasonable hypotheses that had already been suggested or developed in explanation Of the origin of these ores. His particular opportunity was that Of testing these hypotheses by careful considera tion Of a larger body Of facts than was available to earlier workers, Of discovering new evidence in these facts, and, by processes Of elimina tion, selection, and combination, Of building up a consistent theory of genesis for the ore deposits Of the Joplin type. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zinc and Lead Deposits of the Upper Mississippi Valley SO far there are not many branch lines to the mines, though a few have been built in the Hazel green-benton district. In general, coal and supplies must be hauled to the plants by wagon at a cost of 40 cents to $2 a ton, and the ore must also stand a wagon haul to the cars. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metals in the earth's crust are very unevenly distributed and, traditionally, a small number of ore deposits, districts or countries have dominated the world supply and have influenced commodity prices. The importance of exceptionally large, or rich, deposits has greatly increased in the age of globalization when a small number of international corporations dominate the metals market, based on few very large ore deposits, practically anywhere in the world. Search for giant orebodies thus drives the exploration industry: not only the in-house teams of large internationals, but also hundreds of junior companies hoping to sell their significant discoveries to the "big boys". Geological characteristics of giant metallic deposits and their setting and the politico-economic constraints of access to and exploitation in prospective areas have been a "hot topic" in the past fifteen years, but the knowledge generated and published has been one-sided, scattered and fragmented. This is the first comprehensive book on the subject that provides body of solid facts rather than rapidly changing theories, written by author of the Empirical Metallogeny book series and founder of the Data Metallogenica visual knowledge system on mineral deposits of the world, who has had an almost 40 years long international academic and industrial experience. The book will provide abundant material for comparative research in metallogeny, practical information for the explorationists as to where to look for the "elephants", and some inspiration for commodity investors.
