Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman Suffrage: A Reply Smith demurs, and contends that the lot of the woman has not been determined by the will of the man, at least in any considerable degree. According to him it had its origin in those circumstances which made it expedient, on public grounds, that in the early stages of civilization the family should be socially, legally, and politically a unit. Into this portion of the controversy, however, I cannot see that there would be any advantage in entering. Whether Mr. Mill was right or wrong in his view of the historical question, he was at all events eminently successful in the purpose for which he introduced the discussion. He has secured a hearing for the cause of woman, so effectually, that we may now at least feel confident that it will not be ultimately decided on other grounds than those of reason and justice. Nor does it in truth matter whether in approaching the question of Woman Suffrage we adopt Mr. Mill's or Mr. Smith's theory. Both alike regard the existing disabilities of women as survivals - Mr. Mill, as survivals from a very early period in which physical force was supreme; Mr. Smith as survivals from the state of things which produced the peculiar constitution of the patriarchal family but both as survivals, and therefore as belonging to a condition of life which has passed away. The point is thus of purely archaeological interest, while the real question now. Before the public is, not as to the origin of woman's disabilities, but as to their present expediency; the interest of the whole community, to borrow once more Mr. Smith's language, being the test. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women's Suffrage: The Reform Against Nature In this manner it results that the lot of woman comes to be a lot of abridgment and suppression, much more commonly than we have been oh serving ourselves. As our attention is called to the matter, and we become more completely awake to it, we are surprised to find how many disadvantages are laid upon the condition of woman that no principle of equity permits, and no pretense of reason or necessity justifies. It does not surprise us that, in the savage and bar barons forms of society, she is reduced to the lot of a menial or drudge and well nigh to a beast of burden; or that she is bought and sold for mar riage, apart from any right of consent, and con signed in this manner to a husband whose power is a power of life and death. All such monstrous kinds of wrong we expect to encounter in the bar baric conditions of society. But the real wonder now forcing itself upon' our discovery, is that our own deliberately adjusted laws and institutions are so often unequal, as regards the property rights of men and women and the redress of their per sonal wrongs that women are so often excluded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unexpurgated Case Against Woman Suffrage IT has come to be believed that everything that has a bearing upon the concession of the suffrage to woman has already been brought forward. In reality, however, the influence of women has caused man to leave unsaid many things which he ought to have said. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Suffrage by Constitutional Amendment The following pages contain substantially the five lectures delivered by the author in the Storrs Lecture Course in the Law School of Yale University, in February, 1916. The title given to this book, "Woman's Suffrage by Constitutional Amendment," is not the same under which the lectures were originally given. Their title was "Local Self-Government." The reader will see that the real discussion in these pages is devoted to the proper and rightful demarcation of the powers of the Federal and State Governments under the Constitution of the United States, and the necessity for maintaining those powers in a just equilibrium for the preservation of the Liberty of American citizens. Many of them regard the position of the Bible as clearly and directly antagonistic to it and as alone decisive of the question. Many of the friends of the cause are embarrassed by the claim. I believe that it admits of demonstration, that the passages of Scripture relied upon by the Opponents of Woman Suffrage, conceding all that they claim as to their meaning, and as to the permanency and universality of their application, have nothing to do with the question, and must be ruled out of the discussion for irrelevancy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense Applied to Woman Suffrage Today, also, the protest, the declaration of independence, does not receive the unanimous support of the classes on whose behalf it is made. There are Tories in the midst, and plan sible reasons are advanced even by women, against the demand made for them, to be allowed to take, among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal place to which the laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them. Interested men who are not to be trusted, weak men who cannot see, prejudiced men who will not see, and a certain set of moderate men who think better of the European world than it deserves, are those who espouse the doctrine of reconciliation. And today, as in 1776, the demand to emerge into political individuality, from a condition of political non-existence, - the demand to become recognized factors in the political life of the State, implies, and also forebodes changes in the social status of those demanding, which is of far more consequence than any of the special reasons which may be urged in support of the demand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women's Suffrage and National Danger: A Plea for the Ascendency of Man Possibly it is now rather late in the history of the Women's Suffrage movement for the appearance of a treatise upon the subject. Yet I cannot but think that, great as is the bulk of the literature wherein the arguments of those who favour the movement are set forth, the comprehensive exposition of those reasons which may be fairly suggested as justifying opposition has been comparatively neglected. Notwithstanding the brilliant speeches which have been delivered by some of those who have in Parliament resisted the claims on behalf of women, so complete has been the omission to systematise and aggressively circulate the leading outlines of their case, that I very much doubt whether the majority of judicially-minded citizens are sufficiently in possession of them.
