Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wrack of the Storm The reader taking up this volume will, for the first time in the work of one who hitherto had cursed no man, find words of hatred and malediction. I would gladly have avoided them, for I hold that he who takes upon himself to write pledges himself to say nothing that can derogate from the respect and love which we owe to all men. I have had to utter these words; and I am as much surprised as saddened at what I have been constrained to say by the force of events and of truth. I loved Germany and numbered friends there, who now, dead or living, are alike dead to me. I thought her great and upright and generous; and to me she was ever kindly and hospitable. But there are crimes that obliterate the past and close the future. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wreck of the "Scotsman" And the Grace of God The second day being Saturday, the weather was somewhat cloudy, and prom ised a storm, which rapidly gained head way, and the sea arose with fury, and the vessel tossed about in all directions. The violence of the waves was so great that the officers were compelled to batten down the hatchways, so cutting of access to the deck. The third day came, which was Sun day, and which I can never forget. The height and depth of those immense waves I cannot describe accurately, no more than they appeared like mountain and valley. I am not fond of travelling at the best of times; and the end Of November is not, as a rule, the best of times for travelling. The rule was not proved by November, 1832. It was no exception in the matter of November weather. I don't like bad English weather, but I like bad French weather even worse. I was glad to get into the Dover packet. I was positively relieved to hear the good, hearty swear ing Of Christian sailors once more. The passage was cold, but it was not tedious, and by eleven o'clock that night I was enjoying a glass of hot brandy and water before a big fire in the snuggest corner of the Ship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SS Portland was a solid and luxurious ship, and its loss in 1898 in a violent storm with some 200 people aboard was later remembered as “New England’s Titanic.” The Portland was one of New England's largest and most luxurious paddle steamers, and after nine years' solid performance, she had earned a reputation as a safe and dependable vessel. In November 1898, a perfect storm formed off the New England coast. Conditions would produce a blizzard with 100 miles per hour winds and 60-foot waves that pummeled the coast. At the time there was no radio communication between ships and shore, no sonar to navigate by, and no vastly sophisticated weather forecasting capacity. The luxurious SS Portland, a sidewheel steamer furnished with chandeliers, red velvet carpets and fine china, was carrying more than 200 passengers from Boston to Portland, Maine, over Thanksgiving weekend when it ran headlong into a monstrous, violent gale off Cade Cod. It was never seen again. All passengers and crew were lost at sea. More than half the crew on board were African Americans from Portland. Their deaths decimated the Maine African American community. Before the storm abated it became one of the worst ever recorded in New England waters. The storm, now known as “The Portland Gale,” killed 400 people along the coast and sent more than 200 ships to the bottom, including the doomed Portland. To this day it is not known exactly how many passengers were aboard or even who many of them were. The only passenger list was aboard the vessel. As a result of this tragedy, ships would thereafter leave a passenger manifest ashore. The disaster has been blamed on the hubris of the captain of the Portland, Hollis Blanchard, who decided to leave the safety of Boston Harbor despite knowing that a severe storm was hurtling up the coast. Blanchard, a long-time mariner, had been passed over for a promotion for a younger captain. He decided he wanted to show the steamship company that they had made a mistake by getting the Portland safely into port ahead of the imminent storm. Author J. North Conway has created here a personal, visceral account of the sinking and the times and the people involved, with stories to bring readers onto the Portland that day: Here is Eben Heuston, the chief steward onboard the ill-fated ship. More than half of the crew of the ship were African Americans. Hueston was an African American who lived in the Portland community of Munjoy Hill and was a member of the Abyssinian Church. After the sinking of the Portland the African American community disappeared and the church closed. And Emily Cobba nineteen year old singer from Portland’s First Parish Church who was scheduled to give her first recital at the church on that Sunday. And Hope Thomas who came to Boston to shop for Christmas and because she decided to exchange some shoes she purchased missed taking the ill-fated Portland. Because of the lack of communications from Maine to Cape Cod, it was days before anyone was able to get word about the fate of the ship or survivors. Author J. North Conway has painstakingly recreated the events, using first-hand sources and testimonies to weave a dramatic, can’t-put-it down narrative in the tradition of Erik Larson’s Isaac’s Storm and Walter Lord’senduring classic, A Night to Remember. He brings the tragedy to life with contemporaneous accounts the Coast Guard, from Boston newspapers such as the Globe, Herald, and Journal, and from The New York Times and the Brooklyn DailyEagle.

O'Connor have manifested their interest in bringing to the attention of the general public the graphic stories of American heroism which are contained in this volume. Among these friends was Charles W. Eldridge, formerly of the publishing house of Thayer and Eldridge, Boston, and afterward connected with the Treasury Department at Washington. Out of loyalty to O'Connors memory, Mr. Eldridge undertook the considerable task of examining all of O'Connors contributions to the Annual Reports of the Life-Saving Service, and of selecting those best adapted for republication. The preparation of the volume for the press was nearly completed at the time of Mr. Eldridge's death in 1903, and the publishers of "Heroes of the Storm" desire to express their obligation to the service which Mr. Eldridge's affectionate admiration for his friend led him to perform. And behind the stark, black stems of the forest trees glimmered an unearthly fire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wreck of the South Pole or the Great Dissembler, and Other Strange Tales Readers may remember the story told by an ancient mariner which was published last November. This was an account of a cruise which Capt. Reynolds, of New London, Conn., made in the South Seas twenty-six years ago. This voyage, so far as the South Seas were con cerned, ended at the South Georgia Islands, where the captain and his crew remained until driven out by the ice. These islands are situated exactly miles east of Cape Horn, with an oceanic current running directly from the southern end of the American Continent to them. Here is the most beautiful harbor in the world - the Cum berland. It is surrounded on three sides by lofty moun tains which rear their heads straight upward feet above the sea, and down whose sides five cataracts flow. But wild and rugged as are those mountain peaks and tempestuous as may be the ocean out beyond, no storms are ever felt within the harbor, although looking upward the sailor can see them raging around the mountain tops. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out of the Wreck Her voice was what you might expect from the face with its steady lights, cool, clear, smooth in ections, yet a touch of the latent strength she was compelled to sum mon, and a suggestion also of the capacity for passion and tenderness. When she spoke you felt as if there were certain songs she could sing incomparably, but having once heard them from her you could never listen to any other rendering of them. Eleanor, you must surely know that a woman who leaves her husband exposes herself to criticism, censure, and yes, temptation. Men seldom respect a woman who throws off the restraints of the marriage vow! I am sure we all regret Tom's course, Mrs. Marshall as keenly as you can; and in time he may see the folly of it.
