Download or read book Bodyguards written by Antony Loveless and published by Crabtree Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of bodyguard or close protection officer" is highly misunderstood. In action films, threats are obvious: ski-mask wearing gunmen fire at the client from a speeding black Suburban truck. In real life, threats may be harder to assess. If a crowd of unarmed protesters blocks the client's access to his or her car as well as the building they are being escorted to, this poses a threat. However, bodyguards have no legal right to use force in a public place unless they are being attacked. Usually bodyguards are the ones who call the police. This interesting new book examines the different types of bodyguard - police, military and civilian; their training; typical roles; the equipment they use; weapons; bodyguards and the law; evasive driving; and life as a bodyguard.
Book Synopsis Do Immigrants Work in Riskier Jobs? by : Pia M. Orrenius
Download or read book Do Immigrants Work in Riskier Jobs? written by Pia M. Orrenius and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent reports suggest that immigrants are more likely to hold jobs with worse working conditions than U.S.-born workers, perhaps because immigrants work in jobs that â¿¿natives donâ¿¿t want.â¿¿ Despite this widespread view, earlier studies have not found immigrants to be in riskier jobs than natives. This study combines individual-level data from the 2003â¿¿2005 American Community Survey on work-related injuries and fatalities to take a fresh look at whether foreign-born workers are employed in more dangerous jobs. The results indicate that immigrants are in fact more likely to work in risky jobs than U.S.-born workers, partly due to differences in average characteristics, such as immigrantsâ¿¿ lower English language ability and educational attainment. Book excerpt: Every Alaskan king crab season, brothers Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand risk their lives and seek their fortunes upon the treacherous waters of the Bering Sea. Sons of a hard-bitten, highly successful fisherman, and born with brine in their blood, the Hillstrand boys couldn’t imagine a life without a swaying deck underfoot and a harvest of mighty king crabs waiting to be pulled from the ocean floor. In pursuit of their daily catch, the brothers brave ice floes and heaving waves sixty feet high, the perils of thousand-pound steel traps thrown about by the punishing wind, and the constant menace of the open, hungry water—epitomized in the chorus of a haunting sailors’ sing-along: “Many brave hearts are asleep in the deep, so beware, beware.” By turns raucous and reflective, exhilarating and anguished, enthralling, suspenseful, and wise, Time Bandit chronicles a larger-than-life love affair as old as civilization itself—a love affair between striving, willful man and inscrutable, enduring nature.

Download or read book Brush Cat written by Jack McEnany and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Year in the Woods Brush Cat recounts a year in the life of men who perform one of the most dangerous jobs in America—logging New England’s vast forests for timber used in hundreds more ways than most of us realize, from houses to furniture to paper to electricity. In the spirit of John McPhee and Tracy Kidder, we meet an unforgettable cast of characters; feel their pain and exultation, and come to realize the centrality of wood in all of our lives. While they are first and foremost loggers cutting down trees, they are also ardent and effective conservationists who depend on healthy, intact forests for their long-term survival. True, some loggers are wood pirates, but most are pragmatic environmentalists, always asking the question: How do we keep this crop alive and thriving forever? The narrative moves deftly from useful tips on how not to lose body parts to a chain saw, through the terror of huge trees that fall the wrong way, to inconsistent and wrong-headed government forest management. It explores the worldwide demand for wood and wood chips, as well as the effect of climate change on the forest, and traces the money that keeps it all moving. Brush Cat clears the branches to reveal a hidden and fascinating world.
