Book Synopsis Early Civilizations of the Old World by : Charles Keith Maisels
Download or read book Early Civilizations of the Old World written by Charles Keith Maisels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new paperback edition of Early Civilizations of the Old World, Charles Keith Maisels traces the development of some of the earliest and key civilizations in history. In each case the ecological and economic background to growth, geographical factors, cross-cultural intersection and the rise of urbanism are examined, explaining how particular forms of social structure and cultural interaction developed from before the Neolithic period to the time of the first civilizations in each area. This volume challenges the traditional assumption of a band-tribe-chiefdom-state sequence and instead demonstrates that large complex societies can flourish without social classes and the state, as dramatically shown by the Indus civilization. Such features as the use of Childe's urban revolution theory as a means of comparison for each emerging civilization and the discussion of the emergence of archaeology as a scientific discipline, make Early Civilizations of the Old World a valuable, innovative and stimulating work.

Book Synopsis Empires of Antiquities by : Billie Melman
Download or read book Empires of Antiquities written by Billie Melman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empires of Antiquities' is a history of the rediscovery of the imperial civilizations of the ancient Near East in a modern imperial order that evolved between the outbreak of the First World War and the decolonization of the British Empire in the 1950s. It explores the ways in which near eastern antiquity was redefined and experienced, becoming the subject of imperial regulation, modes of enquiry, and international and national politics. 0Billie Melman follows a series of globally publicized spectacular archaeological discoveries in Iraq, Egypt, and Palestine, which made antiquity material visible and accessible as never before. She demonstrates that the new definition and uses of antiquity and their relations to modernity were inseparable from the emergence of the post-war international imperial order, transnational collaboration and crises, the aspirations of national groups, and collisions between them and the British0mandatories. This study uniquely combines a history of the internationalization of archaeology and the rise of a new 'regime of antiquities', under the oversight of the League of Nations and its institutions, a history of British attitudes to, and passion for near eastern antiquity and on the ground, colonial policies and mechanisms, as well as nationalist claims on the past. It points at the centrality of the new mandate system. Drawing on an unusually wide range of materials collected in archives in six countries, as well as on material and visual evidence, this volume weaves together imperial, international and national histories, and the history of archaeological discovery which it connects to imperial modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovering World Prehistory introduces the general field of archaeology and highlights for students the difference between obtaining data (basic archaeology) and interpreting those data into a prehistory, a coherent model of the past. The opening section of the book covers the history, methods, and techniques of archaeology to provide a detailed examination of archaeological investigation. It highlights the excitement of archaeological discovery and how archaeologists analyze and interpret evidence. The second half covers global prehistory and shows how archaeological data is interpreted through theoretical frameworks to create a picture of the past. Starting with human evolution, chapters detail the key stages, from around the world, of prehistory, finishing with the transition to post-prehistoric societies. Including chapter overviews, highlight boxes, chapter summaries, key concepts, and suggested reading, Discovering World Prehistory is designed to support introductory courses in archaeology and allows students to experience both methods and interpretation, offering a perfect introduction to the discipline.
