John England, First Bishop of Charleston, Vol. 4 of 5 You are aware that, by the law of 1696, no Roman Catholic was permitted to profess his religion in Carolina; and this law was not repealed at the time of the Revolution. As far as I can discover, no clergyman of that church ever entered Carolina previous to 1783; no one was stationed in it until several years later; until 1821 there was no station for a mission or a priest, in South Carolina, outside the city of Charleston. In 1790, there was considerable difficulty in obtaining the means of very poor sup port for one priest in this city. With those facts before us, I would ask, what was the number of Catholics in this state in 1774, and in 1775? I believe that scarcely ten could be discovered. Wherever the victim of the original male diction is found, whether at the equator or near the pole, in China, in California, upon the Mississippi, the Ganges, the Danube, or the Nile; in the monarch's palace, or in the Arab's tent; whether he discourses in the halls Of the academy, or encounters the lion or the panther In the recesses of the forest, or under the Open canopy Of heaven whatever be the tinge of his complexion, or the quality and form of his vesture, he is equally a child of Adam, and not only bone of his bone, and flesh of his flesh, but moreover liable to all those disorders which that flesh is heir to. The necessity of study ing and remedying or alleviating those dis orders is, and has always been, and will always continue to be, a universal and an important concern. The subject of those disorders being then, everywhere the same, and the attention Of so many persons of various nations and ages having been given to the improvement Of the science of heal ing, nothing can be more beneficial, or de sirable, or proper, than that the good men so employed should possess the faculty of communicating with ease and precision to their brethren throughout the world, the useful discoveries which they make; and thus rapidly give to each individual of the fraternity the benefit derived from the ex perience of the whole body. This can only be continued as it has heretofore been effected, by the preservation of a common language, the meaning Of whose terms is not liable to change and which is more or less prevalent through the regions of science and civilization, all over the universe. In this view 1 fearlessly assert, that an accu rate and extensive knowledge of the Greek and Latin languages, so far from being speculative or unnecessary literature, is essential for the preservation and perfection of medical knowledge and surgery.
